SummarySquamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncommon and frequently aggressive subtype of gallbladder cancer known for its poor outcomes compared with other gallbladder tumours. Gallbladder SCC typically presents as higher grade and more advanced than adenocarcinoma, resulting in lower estimated survival. Early recognition of these tumours is ideal, but infrequently achieved. Herein is a case of a male patient in his 80s with new onset abdominal pain who was initially diagnosed with cholecystitis, but diagnostic imaging revealed a gallbladder mass. Surgical resection and pathology revealed pure

Gallbladder volvulus is an uncommon condition that mostly affects older women. The cause of gallbladder volvulus is unknown, although intraoperative evidence of a floating gallbladder with a twisting of its pedicle, resulting in gallbladder ischemia, may lead to subsequent complications. Gallbladder volvulus symptoms are similar to acute cholecystitis, leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment. Early detection and prompt surgical intervention are critical for reducing morbidity and mortality. Even though numerous case reports have been published since 1898, gallbladder volvulus remains challe

Left-sided gallbladder, a rare congenital anomaly, is defined as a gallbladder located to the left of the round ligament. A 42 year-old female underwent a cholecystectomy for gallstone disease. At laparotomy, we found that the round ligament was located to the right of its normal position and was continuous with the right anterior branch of the portal vein. Though normally situated, the gallbladder was therefore, on the left side of the anomalously right-sided round ligament, fulfilling the definition of a left-sided gallbladder. This case indicates that a third type of left-sided gallbladder

A patient with upper abdominal discomfort had Tc-99m IDA scintigraphy performed for suspected gallbladder disease. In addition to filling of the bile ducts and the gallbladder, tracer collected in the right side of the abdomen and was thought at first to be the right paracolic gutter, indicating a gallbladder rupture. Discussion with the surgeon and radiographic correlation indicated that the patient did not have gallbladder perforation but, rather, a malrotation of the bowel. This diagnosis became clear on delayed images.

Background Gallbladder carcinoma is a rare cancer with incidence of less than 2 per 100,000 populations worldwide. It is the fifth most frequent gastrointestinal malignancy. Radiological or gross examination of majority of gallbladder carcinoma detects no mass. This may lead to under or over diagnosis of cases in histological examination. Objective To identify pathologic features that contribute to the difficulty in diagnosis of gallbladder carcinoma. Method Between 2018 and 2023, 22 patients with gallbladder carcinoma were identified using the histopathology registry book at the department of

BACKGROUND: A proper balance between the activator and the repressor form of GLI3, a zinc-finger transcription factor downstream of hedgehog signaling, is essential for proper development of various organs during development. Mutations in different domains of the GLI3 gene underlie several congenital diseases including Greig cephalopolysyndactyly syndrome (GCPS) and Pallister-Hall syndrome (PHS).
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we describe the case of an overlapped phenotype of these syndromes with agenesis of the gallbladder and the pancreas, bearing a c.2155 C > T novel likely pathogenic variant o

OBJECTIVE: To study clinical diseases associated with pancreaticobiliary maljunction with or without bile-duct dilatation.
DESIGN: A retrospective study over 16 years.
SETTING: A single university surgical service in Japan.
PATIENTS: Thirty-three patients with pancreaticobiliary maljunction.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Gallstones and cancer in patients with and without bile-duct dilatation.
RESULTS: Twenty-five patients had dilatation of the bile duct, 8 did not. Seven (28%) of the 25 patients with bile-duct dilatation had gallstones compared with 1 (12%) of the 8 patients with no dilatation.

Ultrasonography is a helpful, non-invasive, and relatively inexpensive adjuvant to oral cholecystography for evaluating the gallbladder and its diseases. This method can be highly accurate in detecting gallstones and is specially useful when there is non-visualisation in radiographic contrast studies. Various ultrasound patterns of gallstones are described. All these patterns should demonstrate a sonic shadow in association with an intraluminal defect. Sonography is particularly useful in demonstrating cholelithiasis and organ dilatation in suspected acute cholecystitis. In addition to gallbla

OBJECTIVE: We sought to measure gallbladder emptying in scleroderma patients, when stimulated by exogenous cholecystokinin.
METHODS: Twenty-eight consecutive scleroderma patients were evaluated. Ten were excluded for the presence of gallstones. Gallbladder motor function was studied in 18 patients and 18 controls, using specific parameters for the quantification of gallbladder emptying dynamics. Resting gallbladder volumes were compared using the Dodds method with real-time ultrasound. Cholecystokinin (CCK)-stimulated gallbladder function (0.02 microg/kg CCK intravenous infusion/30 min) was a

BACKGROUND: IgG4-related cholecystitis, which is a manifestation of IgG4-related disease in the gallbladder, is associated with autoimmune pancreatitis or IgG4-related sclerosing cholangitis in most cases; isolated gallbladder lesions without systemic manifestations are very rare. Gallbladder wall thickening is often diffuse, but sometimes localized, in which case, differentiation from gallbladder cancer becomes difficult. The characteristic features of IgG4-related cholecystitis on imaging that would enable differentiation from gallbladder cancer remain poorly described.

OBJECTIVES: It is difficult to make accurate diagnoses of polypoid lesions in the gallbladder. To increase the diagnostic accuracy, we have developed an endoscopic technique to obtain gallbladder bile, termed endoscopic transpapillary catheterization into the gallbladder (ETCG). We evaluated the usefulness of a molecular biological approach to the diagnosis of gallbladder carcinoma, in which gallbladder bile obtained by the ETCG technique is used.
METHODS: Twenty patients undergoing an operation because of suspicion of gallbladder carcinoma were enrolled. Twelve patients were confirmed to hav

Gallbladder volvulus is a rare disease which may affect the elderly. It mimics clinically an acute cholecystitis, but the ultrasound signs may provide an early diagnosis: a very large, anteriorly floating gallbladder, with very thickened, multi layered wall, could orientate the physician to this rare disease. We present one case of gallbladder volvulus with its radiological signs. The symptoms, the etiology and the radiological examinations are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) is a lysosomal storage disease that leads to neurological deterioration and visceral involvement, including sulphatide deposition in the gallbladder wall. Using our institution's extensive experience in treating MLD, we examined the incidence of gallbladder abnormalities in the largest cohort of children with MLD to date.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of all children with MLD, adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), or Krabbe disease who underwent hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) at our institution between 1994 and 2015. Baseline

Pseudoaneurysm of the hepatic artery due to cholecystitis may be very rare, and in our survey of the literature, the present case report is the first case of such a pseudoaneurysm. A 64-year-old woman presented with upper gastrointestinal bleeding and severe epigastric pain. Upper gastrointestinal tract endoscopy revealed blood coming out of the papilla of Vater. Color-Doppler ultrasound imaging showed a pulsatile wave pattern in an echogenic lesion inside the gallbladder. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography demonstrated a 3-cm pseudoaneurysm in the distended gallbladder. Angiography disclos

Thirteen patients presenting with acute cholecystitis and considered high surgical risks were treated with a percutaneous needling procedure under ultrasonic guidance. The gallbladder was drained following simple needle puncture in six cases while a drainage catheter was inserted in seven. A premedication of 0.5 mg of atropine and 50 mg of pethidine was given. The gallbladder became decompressed in all cases, and pain was instantly relieved. Impacted stones were freed from the cystic duct in two cases and from the papilla of Vater in another two cases. The patients' condition improved and elec

Computed tomography (CT) was used to study 79 patients with suspected gallbladder disease. First and second generation scanners were used to determine the efficacy of CT in detecting cholecystitis or cholelithiasis. Manifestations of gallbladder disease such as hydrops, opaque and nonopaque gallstones, chronic cholecystitis with thickened inflammatory walls, and secondary liver abscesses can be easily detected. It is a useful technique for individuals in whom the gallbladder has failed to opacity on oral cholecystography. The scanning method is described, and estimates of reliability are given

Gallbladder torsion is an uncommon clinical entity and a difficult condition to diagnose preoperatively. Since its first description in 1898 by Wendel there have been over 500 documented cases in the literature. It is known to occur when there is rotation of the gallbladder along the axis of the cystic duct and vascular pedicle. Except for isolated cases reported in childhood, this disease is more frequently encountered in the elderly with 85% of the cases reported between the ages of 60 and 80 years. There is a female preponderance with a female to male ratio of 3:1. Gallbladder torsion typic
