Molecular detection of mutations in isolates of multidrug resistant tuberculosis and tuberculosis suspects by multiplex allele specific PCR.

For lowering prevalence of drug resistance it is necessary to diagnose TB in tuberculosis sputum suspect patients instead of TB-cultured samples which required a long time of culturing. Comparison of the results of drug resistant bacterial genes in both tuberculosis suspect sputum and multi-drug resistant DNA isolates detected by MAS-PCR. In the current study, the genetic mutations linked with INH, RIF as well as EMB drugs were detected by MAS-PCR simultaneously in MDR as well as TB suspect sputum isolates. 175/291 samples belonged to MDR and 116/291 samples belonged to tuberculosis suspect gr

Molecular epidemiology of Klebsiella pneumoniae invasive infections over a decade at Kilifi County Hospital in Kenya.

Multidrug resistant (MDR) Klebsiella pneumoniae is a common cause of nosocomial infections worldwide. Recent years have seen an explosion of resistance to extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) and emergence of carbapenem resistance. Here, we examine 198 invasive K. pneumoniae isolates collected from over a decade in Kilifi County Hospital (KCH) in Kenya. We observe a significant increase in MDR K. pneumoniae isolates, particularly to third generation cephalosporins conferred by ESBLs. Using whole-genome sequences, we describe the population structure and the distribution of antimicrobial resi

Novel functions of o-cymen-5-ol nanoemulsion in reversing colistin resistance in multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae infections.

Multidrug resistance (MDR) Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) is a major emerging threat to human health, and leads to very high mortality rate. The effectiveness of colistin, the last resort against MDR Gram-negative bacteria, is significantly compromised due to the widespread presence of plasmid- or chromosome-mediated resistance genes. In this study, o-cymen-5-ol has been found to greatly restore colistin sensitivity in MDR K. pneumoniae. Importantly, this compound does not impact bacterial viability, induce resistance, or cause any noticeable cell toxicity. Various routes disclosed the

Genomic analysis of multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli strains carrying the mcr-1 gene recovered from pigs in Lima-Peru.

Antibiotic resistance is a current problem that significantly impacts overall health. The dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) to urban areas primarily occurs through ARG-carrying bacteria present in the gut microbiota of animals raised in intensive farming settings, such as pig production. Hence, this study aimed to isolate and analyzed 87 Escherichia coli strains from pig fecal samples obtained from intensive farms in Lima Department. The isolates were subjected to Kirby-Bauer-Disk Diffusion Test and PCR for mcr-1 gene identification. Disk-diffusion assay revealed a high level

Reversal of drug resistance in P-glycoprotein-expressing T-cell acute lymphoblastic CEM leukemia cells by copper N-(2-hydroxy acetophenone) glycinate and oxalyl bis (N-phenyl) hydroxamic acid.

Multiple drug resistance (MDR) represents a major obstacle to successful application of chemotherapy and a basic problem in cancer biology. MDR occurs at the cellular level and is multi-factorial in nature. The multidrug resistance gene, MDR1, and its gene product P-glycoprotein (P-gp) are now well known as an important determinant of MDR. Much effort has been devoted to develop P-gp inhibitors to modulate resistance. However, most of these resistance-modifying agents (RMA) are too toxic at the required doses. Therefore, the development of novel RMAs to overcome MDR represents a major challeng

Utility of the REBA MTB-Rifa® assay for rapid detection of rifampicin resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: Drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB), including resistance to both rifampicin (RIF) and isoniazid (INH) referred to as multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), has become an increasing global threat in recent years. Effective management of patients infected with MDR-TB strains requires identifying such patients by performing conventional drug-susceptibility testing (DST) on bacteria isolated from sputum, a process that can take up to 2 months. This delay in diagnosis can result in worsening and continued transmission of MDR-TB. Molecular methods that rely upon nucleic acid amplificat
