Developmental Language Differences in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Possible Sex Difference.

Developmental difference is a common characteristic of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with unclear sex differences. The current study includ … in children with ASD compared with typical developmental sequences. Furthermore, The acquisition of gestures and pragmatics was more impaired in the female subgroup than in the male subgroup. The identified developmental language sequence could help provide a more comprehensive ASD developmental profile.

Consonants in Cri du chat syndrome: a case study.

This article reports on a longitudinal case study of consonant productions in one Norwegian girl with Cri du chat syndrome from age 4;6 to age 9;4. It was shown that she had many articulation errors throughout the period of observation. Furthermore, these errors were shown to fall into three main categories: (1) errors of differentiation and tuning, (2) errors of coordination and sequencing, and (3) missing gestures. Also, omissions of segments were reported to be frequent. In sum, the consonant productions by this girl were found to be both delayed and deviant, as compared to normally develop…

Limb apraxia and cognitive impairment in progressive supranuclear palsy.

Limb apraxia occurs in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP); however, its characteristics and relation to dementia are unclear. We compared 25 probable PSP patients on cognitive and ideomotor apraxia tests with 19 healthy controls. Eleven PSP patients were demented (D-PSP) and 14 not (ND-PSP). D-PSP patients did worse than controls and ND-PSP patients in all cognitive tests; and ND-PSP patients did worse than controls in all except the memory test. In the apraxia test, PSP patients committed mainly sequence errors and executed complex gestures badly. Apraxia correlated strongly with dementia. …

Pointing over gaze: how saliency, proximity, and context shape spatial attention to embodied cues.

Recent work suggests that the pointing hand on an outstretched arm is possibly a more powerful cue than the gaze-cue, suggesting these embodied social cues are not equal. The aim of this study is to investigate differences between gaze- and pointing-cue, looking specifically at saliency, spatial proximity, and trial context. A cartoon figure was used to present four types of cues: (1) a gaze-cue, (2) a peripheral pointing cue on an outstretched arm, (3) a central pointing cue presented over the torso of the body, and (4) a flower cue matched for low-level features to the peripheral pointing cu

Treatment of semantic verb classes in aphasia: acquisition and generalization effects.

Verb retrieval difficulties are common in aphasia; however, few successful treatments have been documented (e.g. Conroy, P., Sage, K., & Lambon Ralph, M. A. (2006) . Towards theory-driven therapies for aphasic verb impairments: A review of current theory and practice. Aphasiology, 20, 1159-1185). This study investigated the efficacy of a novel verb retrieval treatment in two individuals with aphasia who experience verb retrieval difficulty. It involved training verb classes with large (e.g. cut verbs) and limited (e.g. contact verbs) sets of semantic features. Based on action representation th

Geste antagonistes in idiopathic lower cranial dystonia.

Geste antagonistes, or sensory tricks, are well described in focal dystonia affecting the neck, hand, and face. Improvement in dystonic movements is typically maintained while the trick is performed, but disappears when the geste ends. We investigated the phenomenological features of geste antagoniste maneuvers in 19 patients with idiopathic lower cranial dystonia who were prospectively evaluated over a period of 6 years. Of the 19, 10 were men, mean age of onset was 49.8 years, and the most commonly involved lower cranial area was the jaw (10 patients). In most patients, dystonia was task-spe

A Ring for a Ring Finger: A Case Report on Finger Prosthesis.

The primary use of the hand is to grasp, hold, and manipulate objects. Perhaps the most obvious kind of non-verbal communication is the hand gesture. The most common types of partial hand loss are finger and partial finger amputations. Traumatic injuries, congenital absences, or abnormalities are frequent causes, and they create significant treatment issues. In addition to the acute loss of grab power, the disappearance of fingers may result in significant psychological harm. People who want their fingers replaced frequently have high expectations for how a prosthesis will look. This clinical

Evolution of the human tongue and emergence of speech biomechanics.

The tongue is one of the organs most central to human speech. Here, the evolution and species-unique properties of the human tongue is traced, via reference to the apparent articulatory behavior of extant non-human great apes, and fossil findings from early hominids - from a point of view of articulatory phonetics, the science of human speech production. Increased lingual flexibility provided the possibility of mapping of articulatory targets, possibly via exaptation of manual-gestural mapping capacities evident in extant great apes. The emergence of the human-specific tongue, its properties,

Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) or Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma from Shaking: Guidelines for Interventions During the Perinatal Period from the French National College Of Midwives.

Shaken baby syndrome is the most severe head injury in children. Shaking is an extremely violent gesture, often repeated. The children affected are generally less than a year old, in 2/3 of cases, less than 6 months old. More than 10% of them die, and more than three-quarters of the survivors have long-term effects. Prevention is therefore essential. When a parent (or any person) is strongly upset by an infant's uncalmable crying, the best thing for them to do is to lay the child down in a supine position in his or her bed, leave the room, and then ask for help.

Complexity of articulation planning in apraxia of speech: The limits of phoneme-based approaches.

This report presents evidence suggesting that the phoneme-based approach taken by Romani, Galuzzi, Guariglia, and Goslin (Comparing phoneme frequency, age of acquisition, and loss in aphasia: Implications for phonological universals. Cognitive Neuropsychology, this issue) falls short of capturing the complexity of articulation planning in patients with apraxia of speech. Empirical and modelling data are reported to demonstrate that the apraxic pathomechanism resides in the hierarchical architecture of phonological words rather than in the context-independent properties of phonemes. Because the

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and coma: a case report of fenoprofen overdose.

We present the case of a 17-year-old girl who ingested 24 to 36 g fenoprofen as a suicidal gesture. She presented with coma, hypotension, metabolic acidosis, and respiratory depression within four hours of ingestion. The most common adverse effects of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs occur in both therapeutic and toxic doses and include gastrointestinal upset, blood dyscrasias, and analgesic nephropathy. The propionic acid derivatives of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, including fenoprofen and ibuprofen, are rarely associated with severe toxic effects. This is the first report of

Some milestones in premature infants at 6 to 24 months.

The onset of 12 milestones that occur from 6 to 24 months of age was studied in premature and full-term infants. The milestones are: sitting, crawling, teething, walking, pursuit of a hidden sound-making object, stranger anxiety, separation anxiety, "no" gesture, words, phrases, speech "no," and speech "yes." It was hypothesized that premature infants would show delay in acquiring milestones related to time separated from mother. Compared to full-terms, the prematures had no significant difference in the means for the onset of the milestones except for: sitting, crawling and walking related to

Dysfunction of the Human Mirror Neuron System in Ideomotor Apraxia: Evidence from Mu Suppression.

Stroke patients with ideomotor apraxia (IMA) have difficulties controlling voluntary motor actions, as clearly seen when asked to imitate simple gestures performed by the examiner. Despite extensive research, the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying failure to imitate gestures in IMA remain controversial. The aim of the current study was to explore the relationship between imitation failure in IMA and mirror neuron system (MNS) functioning. Mirror neurons were found to play a crucial role in movement imitation and in imitation-based motor learning. Their recruitment during movement observa…
