Crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCh) nanocomposites were synthesized using terephthaloyl diisothiocyanate crosslinker, in the presence of montmorillonite (MMT), in different ratios of the two matrices. Characterization of nanocomposites was performed using different analyses. Swelling behavior was studied in different buffered solutions. It was found that formation of crosslinked CMCh/PVA hydrogels increased the swellability. Metal ion adsorption has also been investigated. The results indicated that crosslinked CMCh adsorbs various metal ions much more than non

Infectious diseases remain a major health problem, where sepsis and other severe infectious diseases are common causes of morbidity and mortality. The importance of early and appropriate treatment of sepsis and severe bacterial infections has been underlined by the successes of measures like the Surviving Sepsis Campaign, among others. Thus, there is a need for clinical and laboratory tools to identify a patient with severe infection early and to distinguish between bacterial and non-bacterial conditions. Heparin-binding protein (HBP) is also called azurocidin, or cationic antimicrobial protei

Trends in antimicrobial susceptibilities in three UK centres participating in the MYSTIC Programme were examined from 1997 to 2002. Isolates were tested using standard methodology to determine the susceptibility breakpoints of meropenem and several other antimicrobial agents including imipenem, ceftazidime, piperacillin/tazobactam, ciprofloxacin and gentamicin. Data are grouped in 2-year blocks. The carbapenems were the most active agents tested against the Enterobacteriaceae (99-100% and 98-100% susceptibility to meropenem and imipenem, respectively) and non-fermenters, including Pseudomonas

Chlamydia pneumoniae DNA has been detected in at least 40% of all major arteries affected by atherosclerosis, but several other microorganisms have also been detected. In this study, diseased vessels were evaluated for the presence of the DNA of seven oro-dental bacteria and two nonoral bacteria. A polymerase chain reaction technique was employed using primer pairs based on 16S rRNA genes. Of 32 specimens tested, 10 (31.2%) were DNA positive: seven for Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and three for Prevotella intermedia. The DNA was found in specimens from the aorta and the iliac, internal

Different antibiotics were tested for their capacity to exhibit synergism when used in combination with promazine (Pr), a tranquilizer endowed with powerful antimicrobial property. For this purpose the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of different antibiotics and Pr was first determined by spot inoculation technique on nutrient agar plates to select the concentrations of the antibiotics and Pr to be used as well as the sensitive strains. It was observed that Pr in combination with tetracycline (Tc) demonstrated a marked enhancement of the inhibitory capacity of each drug, both against th

The activity of rokitamycin, a 16-membered macrolide, was compared with other macrolides and agents used to treat respiratory infections. Rokitamycin had in vitro activity against streptococci and Streptococcus pneumoniae comparable to the other macrolides, inhibiting most organisms at less than 0.03 to 0.5 microgram/ml. It was the most active macrolide agent against Staphylococcus aureus, inhibiting 90% at 1 microgram/ml. Macrolide-resistant streptococci and staphylococci in which resistance was inducible were inhibited, but constitutively resistant Gram-positive bacteria were resistant. Roki…

Cultureable bacterial diversity of previously unexplored Siachen glacier, Pakistan, was studied. Out of 50 isolates 33 (66%) were Gram negative and 17 (34%) Gram positive. About half of the isolates were pigment producers and were able to grow at 4-37°C. 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed Gram negative bacteria dominated by Proteobacteria (especially γ-proteobacteria and β-proteobacteria) and Flavobacteria. The genus Pseudomonas (51.51%, 17) was dominant among γ- proteobacteria. β-proteobacteria constituted 4 (12.12%) Alcaligenes and 4 (12.12%) Janthinobacterium strains. Among Gram positive bact
