Clavibacter michiganensis Reframed: The Story of How the Genomics Era Made a New Face for an Old Enemy.

OBJECTIVE: Bacterial wilt and canker of tomato caused by the gram-positive corynebacterial species Clavibacter michiganensis is an economically important disease threatening the tomato industry in both open-air and greenhouse productions around the world. The disease occurs in many countries, with a particular importance in regions characterised by high temperature and water scarcity. Management of bacterial canker has been a major problem since its original description in 1909. This is due in part to the seedborne nature of the pathogen, allowing the bacterium to be transmitted over long dist

In vitro activity of teicoplanin and vancomycin against gram-positive bacteria from human clinical and veterinary sources.

The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of teicoplanin and vancomycin was determined by the agar dilution method for 186 Gram-positive bacteria from human clinical and veterinary sources. Teicoplanin MIC values were less than or equal to 4 micrograms/ml for 94% of staphylococci (group A, n = 52) and less than or equal to 2 micrograms/ml for all streptococci, enterococci, aerococci and pediococci (group B, n = 75). Seventy-eight percent of Gram-positive rods, Rhodococcus and Leuconostoc spp. (group C, n = 59) were inhibited by 4 micrograms/ml. Teicoplanin resistance (MIC greater than or equa…

Comparative evaluation of Oxoid Signal and BACTEC radiometric blood culture systems for the detection of bacteremia and fungemia.

The Oxoid Signal (Oxoid U.S.A., Inc., Columbia, Md.) blood culture system is a newly described, innovative method for visually detecting growth of microorganisms (D. Sawney, S. Hinder, D. Swaine, and E.Y. Bridson, J. Clin. Pathol. 39:1259-1263, 1986). We did 5,999 paired comparisons of equal volumes (10 ml) of blood in the Oxoid Signal and BACTEC (Johnson Laboratories, Towson, Md.) radiometric blood culture systems at two university hospitals that use identical methods of obtaining and processing specimens. Overall, more microorganisms were detected in the BACTEC system (P less than 0.001), in

Bacteraemia due to Microbacterium paraoxydans in a patient with chronic kidney disease, refractory hypertension and sarcoidosis.

INTRODUCTION: Microbacterium spp. are yellow-pigmented Gram-positive coryneform rods found in various environmental sources, such as soil and water samples. They rarely cause human infection, mostly infecting immunocompromised patients and catheter insertion sites, making them challenging to identify in clinical settings. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 61-year-old female on long-term prednisone therapy for sarcoidosis with minimal exposure to environmental sources, who presented with an overtly infected Hickman catheter site and presyncope. The patient had a central venous catheter

Zoonotic Bartonella species in fleas collected on gray foxes (Urocyon cinereoargenteus).

Bartonella spp. are fastidious, gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria and are usually vector-borne. However, the vector has not been definitively identified for many recently described species. In northern California, gray foxes (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) are infected with two zoonotic Bartonella species, B. rochalimae and B. vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii. Fleas (range 1-8 fleas per fox) were collected from 22 (41.5%) of 54 gray foxes from urban and backcountry zones near Hoopa, California. The flea species were determined, and DNA was individually extracted to establish the Bartonella species harbo

Characterization of substrate specificity and novel autoprocessing mechanism of dipeptidase A from Prevotella intermedia.

Prevotella intermedia, a Gram-negative anaerobic rod, is frequently observed in subgingival polymicrobial biofilms from adults with chronic periodontitis. Peptidases in periodontopathic bacteria are considered to function as etiological reagents. Prevotella intermedia OMA14 cells abundantly express an unidentified cysteine peptidase specific for Arg-4-methycoumaryl-7-amide (MCA). BAU17746 (locus tag, PIOMA14_I_1238) and BAU18827 (locus tag, PIOMA14_II_0322) emerged as candidates of this peptidase from the substrate specificity and sequence similarity with C69-family Streptococcus gordonii Arg-

Lactobacillus gasseri endocarditis on the aortic valve bioprosthesis - a case report.

UNLABELLED: Lactobacillus is a genus of Gram-positive, facultative anaerobic/ microaerophilic, rod-shaped bacteria. Lactobacilli constitute a significant component of the human microbiota in the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract and female urogenital tract. They are also widely used as probiotics. Rarely, especially in patients with impaired immunity or with structural heart disease, do Lactobacilli become the pathogen responsible for serious infections, e.g. infective endocarditis (IE). CASE REPORT: The authors describe a case of an 80-year-old female with a past history of aortic valve re

Systemic nocardiosis in a Mediterranean population of cultured meagre, Argyrosomus regius Asso (Perciformes: Sciaenidae).

Marine cultured meagre, Argyrosomus regius Asso, in central and western Greece were affected by an outbreak of systemic granulomatous disease subsequently demonstrated to be nocardiosis. The fish were originally imported as juveniles from hatcheries in France and Italy and on-grown in Greece, the latter also providing broodstock for a small number of local Greek hatcheries for the production of second-generation juveniles. The disease in cage reared fish had been present throughout the year, particularly in the 1+ and 2+ year old fish with a low to variable morbidity and 1-4% total mortality.

Recurrent "Flexispira rappini" bacteremia in an adult patient undergoing hemodialysis: case report.

A blood culture from a 65-year-old febrile man undergoing hemodialysis revealed, 5 days after inoculation, an unusual gram-negative fusiform rod with darting motility. During another episode of fever 21 days later, this Campylobacter-like organism was again recovered from three blood cultures and subcultured under an H2-enriched microaerobic atmosphere. The organism was catalase negative and oxidase positive and hydrolyzed urea rapidly. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis of whole-cell proteins was indistinguishable from that of "Flexispira rappini" LMG 8738 desc

[Anthrax: an unusual escharotic lesion].

BACKGROUND: Anthrax is basically an animal disease rarely found in humans. We report a case occurring in a young boy who had minimal signs and a suggestive skin lesion. CASE REPORT: A 16-year-old boy living in the steppe pastures in western Algeria was hospitalized for unexplained long-duration fever. Physical examination and laboratory tests did not suggest any infectious disease among those common in our area: typhoid fever, brucellosis, meningitis. Anthrax was suggested by presence of an escarrotic black plaque measuring 2 to 3 cm localized on the left leg. The lesion was very adherent and

Nocardia crassostreae sp. nov., the causal agent of nocardiosis in Pacific oysters.

Seven strains of bacteria were isolated from Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas, with a focal or systemic disease. The strains were aerobic, Gram-positive, acid-fast, produced a mycelium which fragmented into irregular rod-like elements, had a peptidoglycan containing meso-diaminopimelic acid, arabinose and galactose as major sugars, mycolic acids with 46-58 carbon atoms and G + C-rich DNA. All of these properties are consistent with the classification of the organisms in the genus Nocardia. A partial sequence of the 16S rRNA gene of isolate NB4H was determined following isolation and cloning

Corynebacterium conjunctivae: A New Corynebacterium Species Isolated from the Ocular Surface of Healthy Horses.

Twenty-two unidentified Gram-positive, rod-shaped organisms were recovered from the conjunctival surface of apparently healthy horses and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic analysis. Based on cellular morphology and biochemical criteria, the isolates were tentatively assigned to the genus Corynebacterium, although they did not match any recognized species. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequencing studies demonstrated that all of the isolates were phylogenetically members of the genus Corynebacterium. The isolates shared 99.4 to 100% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity among the strains and 96.5% si

Six cases of Solobacterium moorei isolated alone or in mixed culture in Hungary and comparison with previously published cases.

Solobacterium moorei is a strict anaerobic gram-positive rod. It is found in the human microbiota in different parts of the body, but it also appears to be an opportunistic pathogen in some infectious processes. We describe six cases of severe infections identified in 2016 in which S. moorei was isolated alone or in mixed culture involving other anaerobes or both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Three cases were associated with the oral cavity, including a middle ear infection, a wound infection after total laryngectomy, and a mandibular abscess as a result of bisphosphonate therapy. Drinking water from dug wells in rural ghana--salmonella contamination, environmental factors, and genotypes.

Salmonellosis is an important but neglected disease in sub-Saharan Africa. Food or fecal-oral associated transmissions are the primary cause of infections, while the role of waterborne transmission is unclear. Samples were collected from different dug wells in a rural area of Ghana and analyzed for contamination with bacteria, and with Salmonella in particular. In addition, temporal dynamics and riks factors for contamination were investigated in 16 wells. For all Salmonella isolates antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed, serovars were determined and strains from the same well with t

Surgical Site Infection by Corynebacterium macginleyi in a Patient with Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

Corynebacterium (C.) macginleyi is a gram positive, lipophilic rod, usually considered a colonizer of skin and mucosal surfaces. Several reports have associated C. macginleyi with ocular infections, such as conjunctivitis and endophthalmitis. However, even if rare, extraocular infections from C. macginleyi may occur, especially among immunocompromised patients and patients with indwelling medical devices. We report herein the first case of surgical site infection by C. macginleyi after orthopaedic surgery for the correction of kyphoscoliosis in a patient with neurofibromatosis type 1. Our pati
