Comparative analysis of sclerotherapy and surgical resection for pediatric pyogenic granuloma: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a benign vascular lesion frequently encountered in children and young adults. Although surgical excision is traditionally considered the standard of care, it may be limited by operative complexity, postoperative scarring, and patient discomfort. Sclerotherapy with polidocanol has recently emerged as a minimally invasive alternative, but direct comparative data in pediatric populations remain limited. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 30 pediatric patients diagnosed with PG and treated at our institution between January 2022 and Februa

Atypical soft palate pyogenic granuloma in an elderly anticoagulated patient presenting with acute oropharyngeal hemorrhage.

Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a benign lobular capillary proliferation of mucocutaneous tissues that usually arises in response to local irritation. It typically occurs on the gingiva, with extragingival sites such as the soft palate being very rare. We report a 69-year-old female on Apixaban who presented with sudden, profuse oropharyngeal bleeding. Examination revealed a friable, sessile erythematous mass on the right soft palate that was actively bleeding. The lesion was surgically excised with electrocautery under local anesthesia after appropriate management of anticoagulation. Histopatholog

Metastatic mucinous adenocarcinoma from breast mimicking a pyogenic granuloma in the gingiva: a case report.

Mucin-producing adenocarcinomas (MAC) are an extremely rare, indistinct group of neoplasm having either a salivary gland origin or with prominent glandular component. The diagnosis is chiefly based on the histological aspect conjoined with immunohistochemical evaluation as clinico-radiographical features are non-specific. It can arise as a primary metastasis to soft tissues, most commonly from either lung, breast, kidney, or colon. This paper reports a 51-year-old woman with buccolingual gingival swelling having a final diagnosis of metastatic mucinous adenocarcinoma from the breast. A tissue

Intravenous Pyogenic Granuloma in the Inguinal Canal Mimicking Lymph Node Metastasis on PSMA PET/CT.

We present a 68-year-old man with newly diagnosed high-risk prostate cancer who was referred for PSMA PET/CT after the initial CT showed a contrast-enhanced structure resembling a lymph node in the left inguinal canal. No other findings suggesting metastatic disease were seen on CT or bone scintigraphy. PSMA PET/CT showed moderate PSMA uptake in the inguinal tissue, substantiating an unexpected location of lymph node metastasis. The uncommon location warranted an excision biopsy, and an IV pyogenic granuloma was diagnosed on histological examination, emphasizing the importance of biopsy of une

Diagnosis and management of exuberant palatal pyogenic granuloma in a systemically compromised patient - Case report.

AIM: To discuss the diagnosis and treatment of an exuberant oral pyogenic granuloma (OPG) in the palatal region in a systemically compromised patient. METHODS AND RESULTS: A 50-year-old woman presented with extensive and painless nodular mass that extended throughout the palatal region, with difficulty speaking, swallowing and spontaneous bleeding for 6 months. Her medical history showed poorly controlled type II diabetes mellitus and hypertension. The intraoral physical examination also revealed poor oral hygiene and periodontal disease. After clinical and radiographic evaluation, the presum

Four cases of pediatric deep-seated/subcutaneous pyogenic granuloma: Review of literature and differential diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Pyogenic granulomas are benign, reactive, typically superficial vascular lesions that can be idiopathic or arise secondary to trauma, underlying vascular malformations, infections, physiologic or pathologic endocrine changes, and hormone therapy. Deep-seated/subcutaneous pyogenic granulomas (DSPG) are rarely seen in any age group. Pediatric DSPGs can be a clinical and pathologic challenge because these lesions mimic other vascular lesions, including kaposiform hemangioendothelioma, infantile hemangiomas and vascular malformations. METHODS: Retrospective search of DSPG excised at C

Pyogenic granuloma in patients treated with selective BRAF inhibitors: another manifestation of paradoxical pathway activation.

Cutaneous toxicities under therapy with selective BRAF inhibitors such as vemurafenib or encorafenib (LGX818) are frequent, including plantar hyperkeratosis, squamous cell carcinoma, and second primary melanoma. Pyogenic granuloma is a benign, rapidly growing, eruptive hemangioma that often bleeds and ulcerates. Common causes are mechanical trauma and cast immobilization, as well as multiple drugs such as retinoids and antineoplastic agents. However, the development of pyogenic granuloma under treatment with encorafenib (LGX818) has not yet been reported. These three cases might be further exa

Non-pigmented melanoma with nodal metastases masquerading as pyogenic granuloma in a 1-year old.

Malignant melanomas are the most common skin cancer in the pediatric population. Melanoma incidence is extremely low in infants, and metastatic disease is even less common. We present the case of an 11-month-old girl who presented with a non-pigmented lesion that progressed to an ulcerated lesion. Pathology was found to be Spitzoid melanoma of 7.6-mm thickness. Micrometastases were found on examination of the sentinel lymph node. The family chose expectant observation following the excision procedure. A pediatric melanoma registry may be helpful in developing future analyses of incidence in su

Herpes simplex virus type-I and pyogenic granuloma: a vascular endothelial growth factor-mediated association?

Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-related neoangiogenic process. Minor trauma, chronic irritation, certain drugs and pregnancy may favor PG. Viral triggers have not been reported up to date. A 52-year-old woman with hairy-cell leukemia presented because of a 3-month history of a giant pseudotumoral lesion on her left cheek. All prior antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory treatments had failed. Histology revealed PG with sparse and isolated epithelial cell aggregates. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) identified herpes simplex virus type-I (HSV-I) antigen

Idiopathic huge pyogenic granuloma in young and old: An unusually large lesion in two cases.

Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a reactive hyperplasia of connective tissue in response to local irritants, chronic irritation and hormonal changes. It is a tumor-like growth of the oral cavity frequently located in the region surrounding the anterior teeth or skin. It usually arises in response to various stimuli, such as low-grade local irritation, traumatic injury, hormonal factors or certain kinds of drugs. Clinically, the lesion appears as a smooth, lobulated, exophytic mass, exhibiting pink to reddish-purple color which can bleed on slight manipulation. PG has no malignant potential, but recu

Pyogenic granuloma associated with bone loss in an eight year old child: A case report.

Soft tissue enlargements of the oral cavity often present a diagnostic challenge because a diverse group of pathologic processes can produce such lesions. An enlargement may represent a variation of normal anatomic structures, inflammation, cysts, developmental anomalies and neoplasm. Within these lesions is a group of reactive hyperplasias, which develop in response to a chronic, recurring tissue injury that stimulates an exuberant or excessive tissue repair response. The pyogenic granuloma is a reactive enlargement that is an inflammatory response to local irritation such as calculus, a frac

Corticosteroid injection for pyogenic granuloma of the tongue in a rare resembling ulcerative malignancy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a benign vasoproliferative lesion that usually occurs in the skin And mucosa. The clinical manifestations of PG are rapid growth, pedicled or broad base of a single red smooth papule, easily bleeding with minor lesions. Most of the oral lesions occur at the gingiva, And the extra-gingival lesions is less common, and the ulcerative type is even rarer. We present a case of ulcerative lesion located at the lateral margin of the tongue with a peripheral bulge for more than 5 years. It was initially suspected to be tongue cancer and was confirmed to be a PG by

The Use of Diode Laser for the Surgical Removal of Pyogenic Granuloma of the Dorsum of the Tongue: A Case Report.

Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a common reactive oral lesion predominantly involving the gingiva and rarely occurring on the dorsum of the tongue. It can develop at any age but more commonly in the second decade with a female predilection. Numerous factors are associated with its development, and surgical removal is the standard treatment. Various surgical modalities have been used to excise it. Herein, we report a case of a female patient in her late 60s who presented with an exophytic lesion involving the dorsum of the tongue, which was excised using a 940 nm diode laser. In addition, it discuss

A Case Study on Pyogenic Granuloma With Review of the Literature: An Unexpected Sequela or a Complication of Dental Extraction?

Pyogenic granuloma is a common reactive oral lesion primarily found in the gingiva and rarely in extraction sockets. While it can develop at any age, it is more prevalent in the third and fourth decades of life with a higher occurrence in females. Various factors contribute to its development and surgical removal is the gold standard treatment; however, there are various other methods available. This case report documents a rare event in which a female patient in her early 40s presented with an exophytic lesion affecting the extraction socket of her maxillary right lateral incisor. The lesion

Medically uncontrolled conjunctival pyogenic granulomas: correlation between clinical characteristics and histological findings.

BACKGROUND: Conjunctival pyogenic granulomas are commonly seen after ocular surgeries or at an ocular wound site. The aim of this study is to describe a novel histological classification for medically uncontrolled conjunctival pyogenic granulomas (MUCPG), and to explore whether the diversity in clinical features correlates to different histological subtypes of MUCPG. METHODS: This is an observational cross-section case series. We reviewed 46 consecutive patients with conjunctival pyogenic granulomas who did not respond to topical corticosteroids and underwent surgical excision from January 1,

Recurrence of a Peripheral Ossifying Fibroma as a Pyogenic Granuloma Within 1 Week: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral ossifying fibromas (POFs) and pyogenic granulomas (PGs) are non-neoplastic reactive lesions of gingiva that usually affect young females and are usually located in the anterior maxilla. It is possible to misdiagnose POF as PG, peripheral giant cell granuloma, or odontogenic tumors. Histopathologic examination is recommended and is essential for an accurate diagnosis of such lesions, and differential diagnosis is also important because POFs have a tendency to recur. CASE PRESENTATION: A clinical case of gingival swelling in the mandibular left second premolar and first
