[Growth retardation in histiocytosis X. Evaluation of anterior pituitary function (author's transl)].

Among six patients with histiocytosis X of long duration and growth retardation of 3 to 4 standard deviations, three had a blunted growth hormone response to stimulation tests, associated to diabetes insipidus. In two of these three children there was a partial catchup of growth without treatment by human growth hormone. The causes and mechanisms of growth retardation in histiocytosis X, the influence of hydroelectrolytic disorders on growth in these patients and their need for treatment with human growth hormone are discussed.

Inflammatory cytokines and growth in childhood.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this review we report an update on the current knowledge on growth disorders in children with chronic inflammatory diseases, mainly inflammatory bowel disease and juvenile idiopathic arthritis, with a particular focus on the role of inflammatory cytokines as mediators of growth impairment. RECENT FINDINGS: Growth disorders are common among patients with inflammatory diseases. Several factors can contribute to growth failure: poor nutrition, immobilization, drugs, disease activity, duration and severity. There is extensive evidence suggesting that inflammatory cytokines a…

Physical growth and development in patients with Rett syndrome.

Linear growth and sexual development was assessed in 21 girls who fulfilled the clinical criteria of Rett syndrome. Ten (48%) showed growth retardation with length or height below the 5th centile and an additional 8 (38%) had shifted their linear growth downward sometime during the first years of life. All the girls had age-appropriate sexual development with menarche in 6 at a mean age of 11 2/12 years. Early deceleration of linear growth, growth retardation and normal sexual development appear to be useful markers in the clinical definition of Rett syndrome.

[A case of recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa associated with dwarfism with special reference to pathophysiological role of growth hormone].

Epidermolysis bullosa is a group of disorders whose common primary feature is the formation of blisters following trivial trauma. Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB), a subtype of epidermolysis bullosa, is frequently associated with growth retardation. This growth retardation has been reported to be caused by trophopathy following protein loss through skin lesions. Endocrine disorders as the cause of growth retardation in RDEB have not been clearly described. An 11-year-old female had a typical RDEB with dwarfism. Her height was 125 cm and weight was 21 kg, both of which were 2.5

Regulation and dysregulation of hair regeneration: aiming for clinical application.

Hair growth and regeneration represents a remarkable example of stem cell function. Recent progress emphasizes the micro- and macro- environment that controls the regeneration process. There is a shift from a stem cell-centered view toward the various layers of regulatory mechanisms that control hair regeneration, which include local growth factors, immune and neuroendocrine signals, and dietary and environmental factors. This is better suited for clinical application in multiple forms of hair disorders: in male pattern hair loss, the stem cells are largely preserved, but androgen signaling di

LPS-induced lung injury in neonatal rats: changes in gelatinase activities and consequences on lung growth.

Postnatal lung growth disorders may involve imbalance between metalloproteinases and their inhibitors. Inflammatory cell 92-kDa gelatinase overactivity has been reported in adults with lung injury but has not been looked for in neonates. We compared gelatinase activity in neonatal and adult rats and evaluated postnatal lung growth after lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced lung injury. Significant intra-alveolar inflammatory cell recruitment occurred in adults and neonates; cell counts increased 16-fold in adults and 2.7-fold in neonates. Total 92-kDa gelatinase activity was increased in neonates …

[Prepubertal hypertrichosis].

Hypertrichosis must be assessed in the light of the type of hair involved, the pattern of abnormal hair growth, associated abnormalities, age of onset, and family history including ethnic background. Associated diseases and the associated medication must be considered, as drug-induced hair growth is not uncommon. Although disorders of the hair usually have little medical significance and involve no interference with the general physical condition, they may be present in congenital syndromes or be associated with other abnormalities and metabolic disorders. The individual psychological impact o

Miscellaneous uses of anabolic steroids.

The original list of indications for anabolic-androgenic steroids has been reduced to those discussed in this publication so far and to mammary carcinoma, deficiency states and growth disorders. In disseminated endocrine-responsive mammary carcinoma in the female, anabolic drugs have a proven palliative effect in some 20 to 40% of patients, arresting tumour growth for up to 12 months and improving the patient's general condition. In high doses they can cause a disturbing increase in libido. Patients with deficiency states can, irrespective of the cause, benefit from adjunctive anabolic steroid…

IGF-1 in retinopathy of prematurity, a CNS neurovascular disease.

The retina is part of the central nervous system and both the retina as well as the brain can suffer from severe damage after very preterm birth. Retinopathy of prematurity is one of the major causes of blindness in these children and brain neuronal impairments including cognitive defects, cerebral palsy and intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) are also complications of very preterm birth. Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) acts to promote proliferation, maturation, growth and survival of neural cells. Low levels of circulating IGF-1 are associated with ROP and defects in the IGF-1 gene are ass

Fetal Alcohol Growth Restriction and Cognitive Impairment.

BACKGROUND: Although both fetal and long-term growth restriction are well documented in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, effects on pattern of growth trajectory have not been characterized. Furthermore, the degree to which growth trajectories are related to fetal alcohol-related neurocognitive deficits is unknown. METHODS: Ninety-three heavy drinking pregnant women and 64 controls were recruited at initiation of prenatal care in Cape Town, South Africa. Small for gestational age (SGA) was defined as birth weight <10th percentile. Length/height, weight, and head circumference were measured at

Neonatal hypoglycaemia: aetiologies.

Diagnosis of glucose status requires knowledge of the homeostatic mechanisms that maintain the blood glucose concentration between the narrow range of 2.5 and 7.5 mmol/l during periods of eating or fasting. Hypoglycaemia occurring within the first few hours after eating is suggestive of hyperinsulinism. Most glucose is subsequently converted into glycogen in the liver, and hypoglycaemia occurring during this phase is suggestive of glycogenosis. During fasting, gluconeogenesis progressively replaces glycogen as the major source of blood glucose, and hypoglycaemia occurring during this period is

Ghrelin and Growth.

Ghrelin is a pleiotropic hormone, whose effect on growth hormone secretion, through the growth hormone secretagogue (GHS) receptor, is one of its many actions. Relationships between GHS receptor gene variants and human height, both in healthy individuals and in patients with growth disorders have been identified. These include constitutional delay in growth and puberty, idiopathic short stature, and isolated growth hormone deficiency. In this review, we provide an overview of the role of ghrelin in growth.

Growth hormone therapy in children with chronic renal failure.

Growth is impaired in a chronic renal failure. Anemia, acidosis, reduced intake of calories and protein, decreased synthesis of vitamin D and increased parathyroid hormone levels, hyperphosphatemia, renal osteodystrophy and changes in growth hormone-insulin-like growth factor and the gonadotropin-gonadal axis are implicated in this study. Growth is adversely affected by immunosuppressives and corticosteroids after kidney transplantation. Treating metabolic disorders using the recombinant human growth hormone is an effective option for patients with inadequate growth rates.

Molecular characterization of physis tissue by RNA sequencing.

The physis is a well-established and anatomically distinct cartilaginous structure that is crucial for normal long-bone development and growth. Abnormalities in physis function are linked to growth plate disorders and other pediatric musculoskeletal diseases. Understanding the molecular pathways operative in the physis may permit development of regenerative therapies to complement surgically-based procedures that are the current standard of care for growth plate disorders. Here, we performed next generation RNA sequencing on mRNA isolated from human physis and other skeletal tissues (e.g., art

The challenges of optimising the treatment of children diagnosed with idiopathic short stature.

Physicians who treat children with idiopathic short stature (ISS) are challenged in deciding whether the intervention to improve final height is truly efficacious, given the heterogeneity of the diagnosis of ISS. There are numerous studies and reviews that have attempted to assess and demonstrate the benefit of various interventions, such as growth hormone therapy and aromatase inhibitors. Recently, Zhang et al. published a well-written meta-analysis entitled "Comparative effects of growth hormone, testosterone, and aromatase inhibitors on height gain in children and adolescents with idiopathi

Mapping the Relationship Between Post-Traumatic Stress and Post-Traumatic Growth and the Mediating Role of Resilience.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and post-traumatic growth (PTG) are recognized psychological outcomes of trauma, yet their relationship and role of resilience remain incompletely understood. Resilience, shaped by social and cultural factors, may reduce distress and facilitate growth, making it critical for public mental health strategies. The objective is to systematically map and synthesize evidence on the mediating and moderating role of resilience in the relationship between PTSD and PTG, with attention to social, cultural and contextual determinants relevant to population mental heal

The Ethics of Elective Growth Hormone Therapy in Children with Idiopathic Short Stature.

In this article, we analyze the ethics of elective growth hormone (GH) therapy in children with idiopathic short stature (ISS).
