The effects of probiotics intervention on oral health outcomes: a comprehensive umbrella review of meta-analyses.

BACKGROUND: Probiotics are proposed adjuncts for oral health, but findings from meta-analyses are inconsistent. We conducted an umbrella review of meta-analyses to synthesize evidence on probiotics' effects on cariogenic bacteria such as Streptococus (S.) mutans and Lactobacillus, halitosis (volatile sulfur compounds and organoleptic scores), and caries progression. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus databases were searched up to October 2025 for meta-analyses of clinical trials investigating the effect of probiotics on oral health outcomes. Two reviewers screened studies, extracted d…

Characterization of volatile sulfur compound production by Solobacterium moorei.

OBJECTIVE: Solobacterium moorei is a Gram positive bacterium that has been specifically associated with halitosis. The aim of this study was to characterize volatile sulfur compound (VSC) production by S. moorei. METHODS: S. moorei was either grown or incubated in the presence of various supplements prior to determining VSC production with a Halimeter sulfide monitor. The effect of exogenous proteases or glycosidase inhibitors on VSC production by S. moorei was examined. RESULTS: We first showed that S. moorei can convert cysteine into hydrogen sulfide. The capacity of S. moorei to produce V…

The Importance of Nitrate Reduction for Oral Health.

Salivary glands concentrate plasma nitrate into saliva, leading to high nitrate concentrations that can reach the millimolar range after a n … d (organic acid involved in oral acidification) and hydrogen sulfide (volatile compound involved in halitosis) can act as electron donors for these processes. The nitrate-reducing bacteria Rothia and Neisseria are consistently found at higher levels in individuals free of oral disease (vs. individuals with caries, periodontitis, and/or halitosis) and increa …

Tonsillotomy by a Fractional Carbon Dioxide Laser: A New Technique in the Treatment of Chronic Tonsillitis.

Introduction: Chronic tonsillitis has a global prevalence, ranging from 5% to 12%. Its clinical manifestations, like recurrent acute tonsillitis, tonsils hypertrophy, caseum and halitosis, can lead adult patients to be submitted to palatine tonsillectomy, surgery that has morbidity and the potential risk of complications, including severe bleeding. This article proposes a new therapy for chronic tonsillitis in adult patients using a fractional carbon dioxide (CO2) laser, which is a fast, minimally invasive procedure capable of removing the need for the traditional tonsillectomy in many patient…

Halitology (breath odour: aetiopathogenesis and management).

This article reviews the aetiopathogenesis of halitosis (oral malodour) and management. Halitosis is any disagreeable breath odour. In most patients, the odour originates from the oral cavity. In some patients, it has an extra-oral aetiology and, in a few, metabolic anomalies are responsible. In other patients complaining of malodour, this is imagined rather than real. Volatile sulphur compounds (VSCs) and other elements appear largely responsible for the malodour. Predisposing factors include poor oral hygiene, hyposalivation, dental appliances, gingival and periodontal disease and mucosal di…

On the transformation of sulfur-containing amino acids and peptides to volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) in the human mouth.

Halitosis is most often caused by oral conditions. Volatile sulfur compounds (VSC), constituting the major components of oral malodor, are produced by anaerobic, gram-negative bacteria retained mainly in periodontal pockets or on the tongue dorsum. Sulfur-containing amino acids serve as substrate for these bacteria. VSC have also been found to have unfavorable effect on the tissue. The aim of this study was to examine whether normal, healthy individuals with no history of halitosis were able to produce VSC from cysteine, when applied as a mouthrinse. A further aim of the study was to investiga…

Efficacy and safety of omega-3-enriched lickable treats as adjunctive therapy for feline chronic gingivostomatitis: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS) is a debilitating inflammatory condition of the oral cavity in cats, associated with chronic pain, salivation, halitosis, and reduced quality of life. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) have known anti-inflammatory properties and may offer a supportive treatment option. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and clinical efficacy of two marine-derived n-3 PUFA sources - krill oil and green-lipped mussel (GLM) oil - administered through lickable cat treats in cats with FCGS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen FCGS cats were …

[Bad breath from the oral cavity].

Halitosis, or bad breath, is a clinical problem for many people. In the majority of cases the problem has been shown to originate in the oral cavity. All conditions that favour the retention of anaerobic, mainly gram-negative, bacteria will predispose for the development of bad breath. In addition to periodontal pockets, the most important retention site is the dorsum of the tongue with its numerous papillae. The bacteria metabolize sulphur-containing amino acids to yield the volatile sulphur-containing compounds hydrogen sulphide and methylmercaptane. These substances have an offensive odour …

Measurement of oral malodor: current methods and future prospects.

Measurement of oral malodor is complicated by a variety of parameters including complexity of gaseous molecular species, sampling difficulties, temporal variations, choice of suitable subject populations, and lack of agreement on reference standards. Since oral malodor is a perceived olfactory stimulus, direct sampling and assessment by human judges may be the most logical measurement approach. However, as with other psychophysical assessments, human malodor measurement by the human nose may vary widely among and between judges, and consequently cannot be confidently reproduced in other labora
