In human populations, the concomitance of various parasitic infections can induce modifications of the specific immune response to each pathogen and thus induce changes in their clinical expression. Several studies, however, have produced conflicting results. To study the hypothesis that there is an association between helminthiasis and the occurrence of severe malaria a prospective case-control study was carried out in a rural zone of Senegal where 105 presumptive severe malaria attacks were studied in 2001 and 2002. Following parasitological control the cases were divided into two groups: A …

BACKGROUND: Intestinal helminthiasis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in infants and children particularly in the tropics and subtropics. This report highlights the possibility of hookworm infestation in infancy.
METHOD: A case report of hookworm infestation in a three-month old infant who was managed in the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt in May 2001 for failure to thrive and recurrent severe anaemia.
RESULT: The patient was admitted in the children's emergency ward with passage of dark watery stools, fever, excessive crying and severe anemia and was …

School Health Programmes offer the opportunity to deliver public health interventions to a great number of beneficiaries at a relatively low cost and are seen with growing interest by policy makers in developing countries and the donors' communities. In Egypt a pilot School Health Programme has been implemented for the past 6 years in Behera, the largest and most populous Governorate of the Nile Delta. The Programme integrated additional activities for the control of soil-transmitted helminthiasis, human fascioliasis and anaemia in the National Schistosomiasis Control Programme (NSCP), impleme…

Mebendazole (MBZ), a synthetic benzimidazole, is most widely used for the treatment of intestinal helminthiasis. In the present study, a hapten mimicking the MBZ structure was designed by introducing propanoic acid and coupling to carrier proteins by the active ester method to immunize New Zealand rabbits. A sensitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed for the analysis of MBZ in food samples. The rabbit IgG based ELISA had a half-maximum inhibition concentration (IC50) of 7.41 ng mL-1, with a limit of detection of 0.27 ng mL-1. The ELISA showed negligible cross reactivity …

Human strongyloidiasis is a deleterious gastrointestinal disease mainly caused by Strongyloides stercoralis infection. Strongyloides stercoralis is a soil-transmitted helminthiasis that is distributed around the globe. Although definitive diagnosis is carried out through the detection of parasite objects in human stool samples, the development of reliable immunological assays is an important alternative approach for supportive diagnosis. We characterized the two sensitive and specific bands of S. stercoralis filariform larvae that reacted with human strongyloidiasis sera based on immunoblot an…

Anthelmintics used for intestinal helminthiasis treatment are generally effective; however, their effectiveness in tissue parasitosis (i.e. visceral toxocariasis) is moderate. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro activity of lapachol, β-lapachone and phenazines in relation to the viability of Toxocara canis larvae. A concentration of 2 mg/mL (in duplicate) of the compounds was tested using microculture plates containing Toxocara canis larvae in an RPMI-1640 environment, incubated at 37 °C in 5% CO2 tension for 48 hours. In the 2 mg/mL concentration, four phenazines, lapachol and …

Infestation by geohelminths is an important public health problem in developing countries like India. It is a major cause of morbidity in school-age children who have the highest burden of worm infestation. Some of the morbid conditions attributed to intestinal helminthiasis are malnutrition, growth retardation, anaemia, vitamin A deficiency and impaired intellectual performance. Chemotherapy targeted at school-age children has been recommended as a cost-effective and feasible control programme for the control of geohelminths. To optimize resources a geohelminth control programme can be integr…

Malnutrition and helminth infections are known to be associated conditions. Malnutrition, which refers to excesses, deficiencies, or imbalances in intake of energy and/or nutrients, affects millions of people worldwide and is the most common cause of immunodeficiency in the world. In helminth-infected individuals, malnutrition has been associated with an augmented morbidity rate, a higher parasitic load, and prolonged infections, and may also contribute to increased mortality. Helminth infections affect millions of people worldwide, particularly in non-industrialized countries, leading to chro

Marsupials have been the subject of experimental and natural parasitological studies on helminths in the Americas. Brazil has a significant proportion of the American marsupial fauna, with approximately 15 genera and 69 species out of 95 extant. Helminths have been reported for approximately one-third of the Brazilian marsupial species. Consequently, an update of this information is necessary to ensure the correct identification of the species. This work represents the first comprehensive review of the helminths of the Brazilian marsupials, including taxonomic information on both parasites and

BACKGROUND: Helminth parasites are critical components of biodiversity and influence the health of both wild and domestic carnivorous mammals. Despite their ecological and public health importance, comprehensive data on helminth diversity in Uzbekistan remain fragmented. This study delivers a thorough and updated synthesis of helminth parasites infecting 15 species of terrestrial and semi-aquatic carnivorous mammals in Uzbekistan.
METHODS: This study was designed as an updated checklist and narrative review rather than a formal systematic review or meta-analysis. A total of 120 documents publ

Parasitic worms (ie, helminths) encompass a broad spectrum of organisms that lead to a myriad of acute, chronic, and multisystemic disease manifestations rooted in the life cycles of helminths, their migratory paths within humans, and the immunologic reactions they provoke. Although geographic distribution is traditionally given substantial consideration in the process of diagnosing these diseases, increased world travel and migration has resulted in cases all over the world. Because physicians in areas where these organisms are nonendemic are less likely to be familiar with them, the diseases
