Role of Human Leukocyte Antigen Allele Sharing in Human Papillomavirus Infection Transmission Among Heterosexual Couples: Findings From the HITCH Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) polymorphism influences innate and adaptive immune responses. Among heterosexual couples in the HPV Infection and Transmission Among Couples Through Heterosexual Activity (HITCH) cohort study, we examined whether allele sharing in a couple predicted the partners' infections with the same human papillomavirus (HPV) type. METHODS: We tested genital samples from 271 couples for 36 HPV genotypes by polymerase chain reaction. We used direct DNA sequencing to type HLA-B07, -DRB1, -DQB1 and -G. Generalized estimating equations were used to examine the associ

Lifetime commercial heterosexual behavior among HIV negative elderly men from rural Chengdu, China: a modified knowledge-attitude-practice perspective.

BACKGROUND: China is facing big challenges to achieve the "90-90-90 targets". The HIV prevalence of elderly (≥50 years) men have been steadily increasing in China, mainly through the sexual transmission route, but sexual behaviors of them are far from well-studied. In 2019, elderly men accounted for 59.2% of HIV/AIDS cases in Sichuan, China. METHODS: The research design is a cross-sectional study. Face-to-face interviews were conducted among 795 HIV negative elderly men from rural Chengdu, capital City of Sichuan. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression models were applied to examine f

Uptake of provider-initiated HIV and syphilis testing among heterosexual STD clinic patients in Guangdong, China: results from a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: Underscreening of HIV and syphilis in clinical settings is pervasive in resource-constrained settings. Heavy patient loads and competing health priorities in these settings inhibit provider's ability to meet screening coverage targets. The objective of this study was to examine determinants of provider-initiated HIV and syphilis testing uptake at sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics in China. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was performed between July 2016 and December 2016. SETTING: Seven STD clinics in Guangdong Province, China. PARTICIPANTS: Heterosexual STD clinic patie

International travel as risk factor for Chlamydia trachomatis infections among young heterosexuals attending a sexual health clinic in Melbourne, Australia, 2007 to 2017.

BackgroundInternational travel is considered a risk factor for acquiring Chlamydia trachomatis; however, there are little empirical data to support this.AimTo examine the prevalence and risk factors for Chlamydia trachomatis infections among heterosexual international travellers (n = 28,786) attending the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre (MSHC), Australia, compared to Australian residents (n = 20,614).MethodsWe conducted a repeated cross-sectional study and analysed sexual behaviours and chlamydia positivity among heterosexual males and females aged ≤ 30 attending MSHC for the first time between

High diversity of alpha, beta and gamma human papillomaviruses in genital samples from HIV-negative and HIV-positive heterosexual South African men.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the prevalence of HPVs in heterosexual South African men and the impact of HIV co-infection. METHODS: HPV was detected in penile swabs from 195 HIV-infected and 140 HIV-uninfected men using PCR with FAP59/64 primers and Roche Linear Array HPV genotyping (LA). Genotyping of FAP positive specimens was achieved by high-throughput sequencing of amplicons. RESULTS: HPV was detected by FAP PCR and LA in 79% (266/335) of the men. Men with HIV co-infection and men with HIV infected sexual partners had a significantly (p<0.0001) higher HPV infection risk (adjusted

Quadrivalent vaccine-targeted human papillomavirus genotypes in heterosexual men after the Australian female human papillomavirus vaccination programme: a retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Australia introduced a national quadrivalent human papillomavirus (4vHPV) vaccination programme for girls and young women in April, 2007. The HPV genotypes targeted by the female vaccine could also affect the protection afforded to heterosexual men. We examined the prevalence of 4vHPV targeted vaccine genotypes and the nine-valent HPV (9vHPV)-targeted vaccines genotypes among sexually active, predominantly unvaccinated heterosexual men from 2004 to 2015. METHODS: We did a retrospective, observational study of urine and urethral swab specimens from heterosexual men aged 25 years or

Trends in gonorrhoea positivity by nucleic acid amplification test versus culture among Australian heterosexual men with a low prevalence of gonorrhoea, 2007-2014.

BACKGROUND: Testing for gonorrhoea with nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) is not recommended in low-prevalence populations as it results in high numbers of false positive results. The aim of this study was to examine temporal trends of gonorrhoea positivity by NAAT and culture in heterosexual men in Victoria, Australia following recent increases in gonorrhoea notifications. METHODS: Three data sources between 2007 and 2014 were used in this study: notification data from the Victorian Department of Health, Medicare testing numbers of single chlamydia and dual NAATs performed, and electr

HIV-1 subtype C is not associated with higher risk of heterosexual HIV-1 transmission: a multinational study among HIV-1 serodiscordant couples.

BACKGROUND: HIV-1 subtype C has emerged as the most prevalent strain of HIV-1 worldwide, leading to speculation that subtype C may be more transmissible than other subtypes. We compared the risk of HIV-1 transmission for subtype C versus non-C subtypes (A, D, G and recombinant forms) among heterosexual African HIV-1 serodiscordant couples. METHODS: We conducted a nested case-control analysis using data from two prospective cohort studies of heterosexual HIV-1 serodiscordant couples from six countries in eastern and southern Africa. Cases (N = 121) included incident HIV-1 transmissions that we

Chlamydia trachomatis strains show specific clustering for men who have sex with men compared to heterosexual populations in Sweden, the Netherlands, and the United States.

High-resolution genotyping of Chlamydia trachomatis improves the characterization of strains infecting different patient groups and sexual networks. In this study, multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and ompA sequence determination were used for an analysis of C. trachomatis strains from 203 men who have sex with men (MSM) from Sweden, the Netherlands, and the United States. The results obtained were compared with data from 153 heterosexual women from Sweden and the Netherlands. The overlap in MLST/ompA profiles between MSM from Sweden and the Netherlands was 68%, while the overlap between heter

"Condoms are reliable but I am not": A qualitative analysis of AIDS-related beliefs and attitudes of young heterosexual adults in Budapest, Hungary, and St. Petersburg, Russia.

HIV and STD prevention is an essential component of public health initiatives in countries throughout Central and Eastern Europe. Liberalization in sexual values, declining age at first sex, higher levels of sexual activity, and inconsistent condom use have been well-documented among young people in the region following the political, economic, and cultural transitions after the end of the state socialism era. Less well-understood are the reasons for high-risk sexual behavior and psychosocial factors that must be addressed in the development of effective HIV/STD prevention programs. This study

Is there really a heterosexual AIDS epidemic in the United States? Findings from a multisite validation study, 1992-1995. Mode of Transmission Validation Study Group.

The objective of this study was to verify the mode of exposure to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among cases who obtained acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) through heterosexual contact and to determine the proportion of cases initially reported with no risk but whose exposure may have been heterosexual. Adults aged > or = 13 years with AIDS, diagnosed from 1992 through 1995 with heterosexual risk or no risk at six US study sites (Alabama, California, Florida, New Jersey, New York City, and Texas), were eligible. Heterosexual risk was validated in 82% (1,610/1,952) of the hetero

"In the Present I'm Gay. Obviously, I'm Gay": Exploring Sexual Orientation Development with the Klein Sexual Orientation Grid in Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Adults in Southern Chile.

Most non-heterosexual individuals begin their sexual orientation development under compulsory heterosexuality, eventually exploring attractions, behaviors and identities beyond these expectations. The Klein Sexual Orientation Grid (KSOG) examines sexual orientation as a multidimensional construct that can change over time. This study examined the experiences of gay, lesbian and bisexual (LGB) Chilean adults across seven KSOG dimensions and three timepoints. The sample comprised 12 LGB participants, cisgender or non-binary, from Southern Chile, who responded to the KSOG and an accompanying inte…

Exploring barriers and facilitators to HIV care among heterosexual men in western Kenya's fishing- and non-fishing-involved communities: insights through a masculinity lens.

Heterosexual men living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa have high rates of disengagement from HIV care. Despite advancements, barriers to care engagement exist, shaped by masculinities that valorize stoicism, strength and provider roles. This qualitative study was conducted in Kenya's Lake Victoria region. We enrolled 111 heterosexual men living with HIV (60 in care, 51 out of care) from six communities (both fishing-involved and non-fishing-involved). Data were collected via semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the social-ecological model. Results identified structural barriers - food

'A fine line between euphoria and death': a qualitative study exploring gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) use among people who identify as heterosexual living in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Harms associated with gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) use have increased recently in Australia. However, research predominantly focuses on the experience of GHB use among LGBTQ + populations. Non-prescribed GHB use has not been well described in heterosexual populations. Research to examine the experience of heterosexual people, including motivations for use, experiences of harms, and utilisation of harm reduction practices, can inform public health messaging. METHODS: We recruited 26 participants at least 18 years of age, reporting three or more occasions of GHB use in the past 12 mo

Varied Knowledge of HIV Transmission and Prevention Among Gay, Bisexual, and Heterosexual Men Who Have Sex with Men in Australia: Results of a National Online Survey.

We assessed knowledge about HIV transmission and prevention among men who have sex with men (MSM) to identify education needs. A national online survey was conducted across Australia in July-August 2024, including nine HIV knowledge items. We assessed how HIV knowledge varied by sexual identity (using ANOVA), and characteristics independently associated with HIV knowledge using multivariable linear regression. Of 2,688 respondents, 1,241 were gay men (46.2%), 976 were bisexual/pansexual (36.3%), 84 queer (3.1%), 199 straight/heterosexual (7.4%), and 188 identified another way (7.0%). There was
