Many studies have examined the morphological and biochemical changes in the secretory epithelium of snake venom glands after a bite or milking. However, the mechanisms of venom production and secretion are not yet well understood. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the role of the sympathetic nervous system in the control of venom production and secretion. Venom glands were obtained from Bothrops jararaca (Viperidae) snakes, either unmilked previously or milked 4, 7 or 15 days before they were killed. Levels of tyrosine-hydroxylase-like immunoreactivity were higher in venom glands co

INTRODUCTION: Disturbance of sympathetic and vagal nervous system participates in the pathogenesis of hypertension and atrial fibrillation (AF). Renal denervation (RDN) can modulate autonomic nervous activity and reduce blood pressure (BP) in hypertensive patients. We aimed to evaluate the effect of RDN combined with pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) in patients with AF and hypertension.
METHODS: Clinical trials including randomized data comparing PVI plus RDN vs PVI alone were enrolled. Primary outcome was incidence of AF recurrence after procedure.
RESULTS: A total of 387 patients, of them 25

Neurological manifestations are known to occur in patients with autoimmune diseases, often subclinically, but autonomic nervous system (ANS) involvement has rarely been studied, and studies have shown conflicting results. We performed cardiovascular ANS assessment in 125 patients with autoimmune diseases in this case-control study, including 54 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), 39 with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), 20 with primary Sjbgren syndrome (pSS), eight patients with polymyalgia rheumatica (PR), four patients with scleroderma (Ssc) and 35 healthy control subjects. Mitochondrial dysfunctions are linked to a series of neurodegenerative human conditions, including Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, optic neuropathies, and glaucoma. Recently, a series of studies have pointed mitotherapy - exogenous mitochondria transplant - as a promising way to attenuate the progression of neurologic disorders; however, the neuroprotective and pro-regenerative potentials of isolated mitochondria in vivo have not yet been elucidated. In this present work, we tested the effects of transplants of active (as well-coupled organelles were named), liver-isolated mitochondria on

Severe uremia is now a rare occurrence in most developed nations, and yet is still present in many countries of the world. It includes clinical manifestations such as calciphylaxis and uremic frost, which are now rarely seen. Patients with extremely high levels of blood urea nitrogen (above 175 mg/dL) are at a higher risk of experiencing first-time hemodialysis-related complications, in particular dialysis disequilibrium syndrome (DDS). DDS is a central nervous disorder characterized by a wide variety of neurological symptoms that range from nausea and vomiting to even death due to cerebral ed

BACKGROUND: Dysregulation of central nervous system serotonergic (5-HT) activity is implicated in behavioral states and psychological traits associated with depression and aggression, with some studies suggesting possible gender-related differences.
PURPOSE: This study examined the relation of free plasma tryptophan (TRP) to aggression and depression in a sample of 138 nonsmoking adults recruited from the general community. It was hypothesized that TRP would be associated with anger, hostility, and aggression.
METHODS: To minimize effects of diurnal variation and menstrual cycle, fasting blo

INTRODUCTION: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) produces alterations in the autonomic nervous system (ANS), which explains the cardiac manifestations observed in patients. The assessment of heart rate variability (HRV) is what best reflects the activity of the ANS on heart rate. The Polar H7 Bluetooth® device proves to be a non-invasive and much faster technology than existing alternatives for this purpose.
OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study is to determine HRV using Polar H7 Bluetooth technology in ALS patients, comparing the obtained measurements with values from healthy individuals.

BACKGROUND: Ventricular ectopic beats (VEBs) are usually considered a benign condition that can be managed with conservative measures. Heart rate variability (HRV), which is one of the most important methods for assessing autonomic activity, is a noninvasive, quantitative method of analyzing autonomic effects on the heart. We aimed to investigate the risk of arrhythmia in patients with VEBs and without cardiovascular disease by using HRV parameters.
METHODS: Patients with frequent VEBs (more than 30 times in 1 hour, according to the Lown classification) were identified. Identified patients we

Active sensing in biological system consists of emitting/receiving a periodic signal to explore the environment. The signal can be emitted toward distant objects, as in echolocation, or in direct contact with the object, for example, whisking in rodents. We explored the hypothesis that a similar mechanism exists in humans. Humans generate periodic signals at ~10 Hz during voluntary finger movements, which reflects a pulsatile motor command in the central nervous system. In the present study, we tested whether the ~10-Hz signal persists during the active exploration of textures and whether the

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory-demyelinating and neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system (CNS) of a putative autoimmune origin. The disease is characterized pathologically by scattered areas of peri-vascular mononuclear cell infiltrates, demyelination with various degrees of remyelination, axonal loss and gliosis that form multiple plaques throughout the brain and spinal cord, and clinically by a variety of neurological signs and symptoms disseminated in time and space. A better understanding of the immune pathogenesis of MS has led to the development of a va

Methyl CpG binding protein 2 (MeCP2) is a structural chromosomal protein involved in the regulation of gene expression. Alterations in the levels of MeCP2 have been related to neurodevelopmental disorders. Studies in mouse models of MeCP2 deficiency have demonstrated that this protein is important for neuronal maturation, neurite complexity, synaptogenesis, and synaptic plasticity. However, the mechanisms by which MeCP2 dysfunction leads to neurodevelopmental defects, and the role of activity, remain unclear, as most studies examine the adult nervous system, which may obfuscate the primary con

Shyness is a temperament characterized by wariness to social novelty and perceived social evaluation. However, we know relatively little about temperamentally shy children's psychophysiological and affective responses during different phases of social stressors. We examined whether children's temperamental shyness was related to distinct patterns of autonomic and affective responses across three conditions: baseline, speech anticipation, and speech delivery. Participants included 152 children (Mage = 7.82 years, SD = 0.44) who had their autonomic nervous system activity [respiratory sinus arrh

The accurate detection of intrathecal antibodies against the rabies virus (RABV) is critical for antemortem diagnosis and disease monitoring, particularly when the virus-neutralizing activity is low or delayed. In this study, indirect ELISA assays were developed to detect IgM, IgG, and polyvalent (IgA/IgM/IgG) antibodies against the RABV glycoprotein (RABV G) in cerebrospinal fluid. The RABV G antigen, purified by Lens culinaris lectin affinity chromatography, retained its physicochemical and immunoreactive properties, as confirmed by SDS-PAGE, monoclonal antibody recognition and lectin-bindin

Neuromodulators have major influences on the regulation of neural circuit activity across the nervous system. Nitric oxide (NO) has been shown to be a prominent neuromodulator in many circuits and has been extensively studied in the retina. Here, it has been associated with the regulation of light adaptation, gain control, and gap junctional coupling, but its effect on the retinal output, specifically on the different types of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), is still poorly understood. In this study, we used two-photon Ca2+ imaging and multi-electrode array (MEA) recordings to measure light-evo

Adapting to the ever-changing demands of the environment requires a complex interplay between cognitive-affective, neuronal, and autonomic processes. Vagally mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV) is positively associated with both cognitive-affective functioning and prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity. Accordingly, the Neurovisceral Integration Model has posited a shared role of the PFC in the regulation of cognitive-affective processes and autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity. While there are numerous correlational findings in this regard, no study so far has investigated whether the manipu
