Cryptosporidium parvum is an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite that is a well-recognized cause of diarrhea in humans and animals throughout the world, and is associated with a substantial degree of morbidity and mortality in patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). C. parvum primarily infects epithelial cells of the gastrointestinal tract, resulting in acute watery diarrhea for which there is no effective therapy. During infection, all parasite development, sexual or asexual, occurs within epithelial cells of the host. This requires a unique and complex association

Bisbalia vossi n. g., n. sp. is described from Heteromys anomalus (Rodentia: Geomyoidea: Heteromyidae) in northern Venezuela (Aragua). The filariae were found in a membranous pocket in the pleural cavity, and almost all had ingested red blood cells of their host. The morphology of this onchocercine species is highly evolved (advanced reduction of head and caudal papillae; short undivided oesophagus). Its very short microfilariae (60 microm) and the shape of the tail of the female (two terminal median pairs of bosses) suggest that this species could be derived from Ackertia Vaz, 1934, a South A

Highly effective recombinant vaccines have been developed against the helminth parasites Taenia ovis, Taenia saginata and Echinococcus granulosus. These vaccines indicate that it is possible to achieve a reliable, high level of protection against a complex metazoan parasite using defined recombinant antigens. However, the effectiveness of the vaccines against the taeniid cestodes stands in contrast to the more limited successes which characterise attempts to develop vaccines against other platyhelminth or nematode parasites. This review examines the features of the host-parasite relationships

The review describes different aspects of the host immune response to Trichinella, not only at the intestinal level on which most of the studies have focused until now, but also in the muscles which represent the final target of host invasion. The role of antibodies, T cells, mast cells, eosinophils and neutrophils, respectively, in immune reaction to this nematode is considered, in the light of the recent data derived from experimental models, both "in vivo" and more recently "in vitro" and when available, from clinical observations. A section is also devoted to the principal escape mechanism

The paper 'A taxonomic revision of the genus Taenia Linnaeus, 1758 s. str.' (Verster, 1969) gives concise characterisations, together with drawings of rostellar hooks and the terminal genital organs, of the 32 Taenia species and three subspecies which this author found to be valid. Yet, it is hardly possible to quickly identify a questionable species or to readily access information on their hosts, geographical range and synonyms. The present paper compiles these data and additional information on larval characteristics into tables. Measurements and numbers of hooks are shown using a graph. Ad

A comparative study of the development of Schistosoma mansoni during the intra-molluscan phase was made by means of histological sections of Biomphalaria tenagophila, B. straminea and B. glabrata from Brazil. Two hundred snails of each species were individually exposed to 50 miracidia of the S. mansoni, AL line. No larvae were observed in the snails fixed 72 h after exposure. In specimens shedding cercariae, 31 days after exposure tissue reactions encapsulating the larvae were seen in B. tenagophila and B. straminea, in the head-foot, mantle collar and renal ducts. No tissue reactions occurred

4 species of Mallophaga (2 Amblycera, Menacanthus eurysternus and Myrsidea sp., and 2 Ischnocera, Brueelia chayanh and Sturnidoecus affinis) coexist on the body of Common Myna, Acridotheres tristis. The distribution of eggs, nymphs and adults of these species on the body of host is discussed. The patterns of distribution coincides with their morphological adaptations.

Anisakiasis is a zoonotic disease caused by the ingestion of larval nematodes in raw seafood dishes such as sushi, sashimi, ceviche, and pickled herring. Symptoms of anisakiasis include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Because symptoms are vague, this disease is often misdiagnosed as appendicitis, acute abdomen, stomach ulcers, or ileitis. Endoscopic examination with biopsy forceps has facilitated the diagnosis of gastric anisakiasis. Worms can be removed and identified, and a definitive diagnosis can be made. Patients generally recover with no further evidence of disease. Worms

Interactions between tapeworm species in a single host offer intriguing opportunities for immunological studies that attempt to identify the mechanism(s) underlying protection against cestode infections. Mice that are immunized against Hymenolepis citelli infections were shown to be refractory to subsequent H. diminuta challenge infections. The reciprocity of the response was also demonstrated, although the protection recorded for H. diminuta when mice are sensitized with H. citelli is weaker than that observed when mice are primed with H. diminuta against H. citelli challenge. H. citelli was

The vertebrate development of Babesia equi from infected Hyalomma marginatum in Morocco was investigated in vitro and in vivo. It was demonstrated that the sporozoites of B. equi initiate a phase of exo-erythrocytic schizogony in lymphocytes both in vitro and in vivo. On the other hand, sporozoites did not invade erythrocytes in vitro. The complete vertebrate life cycle of B. equi was simulated in vitro, from the invasion of lymphocytes by sporozoites, to the development of macro- and microschizonts, the invasion of erythrocytes by merozoites, and the subsequent intra-erythrocytic schizogony.

A technique for infecting mosquitoes with known numbers of Brugia pahangi microfilariae by enema is described. Virtually all mosquitoes receiving three microfilariae or more by this route contained infective larvae 10 days later. Within a range of 1 to 40 microfilariae, numbers of infective larvae recovered (Y) were related to the numbers of microfilariae administered (X) by the equation log10Y=0.04 + 0.84 log10X. Mosquitoes feeding on sugar for up to 20 days did not lose a significant number of infective larvae. A blood meal 10 days after infection reduced the proportion of females still infe

Experimental infection with Mansonella ozzardi of common haematophagous Diptera collected at a Ticuna Indian village on the upper reaches of the Solimões river in the Brazilian Amazon, showed that Simulium amazonicum and Simulium n.sp. are capable of supporting full development of the parasite. Natural infections with this filaria were found in both species including infective larvae in Simulium n.sp. No development of M. ozzardi occurred in Mansonia amazonensis, Culicoides insinuatus or Lepiselaga crassipes (Tabanidae). The dimensions of developing larvae of M. ozzardi in both species of blac
