1. Among the digestive enzymes synthesized by pancreas, lipase is the principle lipolytic enzyme which hydrolyses dietary glycerides. 2. For its action it requires a coenzyme, colipase. 3. The molecular mechanisms of the interaction of these two are not fully understood. 4. Further, molecular events that regulate and influence lipid absorption are ill defined. 5. The rabbit is the conventional animal model for the study of lipid absorption. We have undertaken the molecular cloning, and characterization of rabbit pancreatic colipase, the coenzyme for pancreatic lipase. 6. Colipase has been clon

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic emphasized the need to study coronaviruses more thoroughly. Next to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), humans can be infected by SARS-CoV, Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), and various seasonal coronaviruses. It is likely that all human coronaviruses have a zoonotic origin and circulated in animal reservoirs before crossing the species barrier into humans. Historically, these viruses have been investigated in vitro and in vivo, mainly utilizing immortalized cell lines and animal models, respectiv

The worldwide health and economic burden of cancer is substantial, necessitating urgent, focused prevention and treatment strategies. The investigation of cancer animal modeling techniques is particularly critical. N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG), a nitrosamine carcinogen, is extensively utilized in the development of several tumor animal models due to its ability to replicate the natural onset of cancer. Nonetheless, MNNG exhibits a propensity for multi-organ carcinogenesis; yet, this aspect remains undiscussed. The MNNG model exhibits distinct characteristics depending on the rou

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), a category of naturally occurring secondary metabolites, are commonly found in various botanical sources. Accumulating evidence indicates that PAs and their biologically active metabolites can interact with cellular components and trigger a variety of toxic effects in animals and humans. Notably, PAs exhibit significant hepatotoxic potential via nutritional supplements, environmental dissemination, food chain contamination, and broader ecological pollution. In this review, we summarize PA-induced hepatotoxicity in humans and animals and the underlying molecular m

Ticks continue to facilitate the spread of pathogens that affect both humans and domestic animals. Domestic dogs interact with humans and other domestic animals, playing a crucial role in the spread of ticks and tick-borne pathogens. This study examined the diversity of tick species infesting domestic dogs and the occurrence of tick-borne pathogens in the Upper East region. Domestic dogs were randomly selected and examined for tick infestation. The sampled ticks were morphologically identified, pooled and screened for tick-borne pathogens using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Sanger sequen

Psychiatric disorders represent a particularly challenging area of medicine to study using non-human animals. They arise from a complex interaction between genetic and environmental factors and are diagnosed using clinical interviews and diagnostic criteria based largely on self-reported symptoms and with significant heterogeneity seen within patient populations. Anxiety and major depressive disorder are the most diagnosed psychiatric disorders, with prescriptions of antidepressants exceeding 80 million in the UK in 2024. Despite more than 70 years of research, we do not understand how antidep

BACKGROUND: Exploration and novelty seeking are cross-species adaptive behaviors that are dysregulated in bipolar disorder (BD) and are critical features of the illness. While these behaviors have been extensively quantified in animals, multivariate human paradigms of exploration are lacking. The human Behavioral Pattern Monitor (hBPM), a human version of the animal open field, identified a signature pattern of hyper-exploration in manic BD patients, but whether exploratory behavior changes with treatment is unknown. The objective of this study was to assess the sensitivity of the hBPM to chan

The current in vivo models for the utility and discovery of new potential anti-leishmanial drugs targeting Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL) differ vastly in their immunological responses to the disease and clinical presentation of symptoms. Animal models that show similarities to the human form of CL after infection with Leishmania should be more representative as to the effect of the parasite within a human. Thus, these models are used to evaluate the efficacy of new anti-leishmanial compounds before human clinical trials. Current animal models aim to investigate (i) host-parasite interactions, (

Melatonin is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland in response to photoperiods and influences many important biological processes. For one, Melatonin has been shown to produce resistance to cancer and infectious diseases in aged animals. Studies in animals have demonstrated melatonin-related mechanisms of action on immunoregulation. Additionally, melatonin has been successfully used in humans, along with interleukin-2, as a treatment of solid tumors. In vivo and in vitro studies show melatonin enhances both natural and acquired immunity in animals. Despite all of this intriguing evidence, mel

Bacterial ClpB is an ATP-dependent disaggregase that belongs to the Hsp100/Clp subfamily of the AAA+ ATPases and cooperates with the DnaK chaperone system in the reactivation of aggregated proteins, as well as promotes bacterial survival under adverse environmental conditions, including thermal and oxidative stresses. In addition, extensive evidence indicates that ClpB supports the virulence of numerous bacteria, including pathogenic spirochaete Leptospira interrogans responsible for leptospirosis in animals and humans. However, the specific function of ClpB in leptospiral virulence still rema

Animals exist as biodiverse composite organisms that include microbial residents, eukaryotic cells, and organs that collectively form a human being. Through an interdependent relationship and an inherent ability to transmit and reciprocate stimuli in a bidirectional way, a human body or the holobiont secures growth, health, and reproduction. As such, the survival of a holobiont is dependent on the maintenance of biological order including metabolic homeostasis by tight regulation of the communication between its eukaryotic and prokaryotic residents. In this review an overview and perspective a

Microbial parasites of animals include bacteria, viruses, and various unicellular eukaryotes. Because of the difficulty in studying these microorganisms in both humans and disease vectors, laboratory models are commonly used for experimental analysis of host-parasite interactions. Drosophila is one such model that has made significant contributions to our knowledge of bacterial, fungal, and viral infections. Despite this, less is known about other potential parasites associated with natural Drosophila populations. Here, we surveyed sixteen Drosophila populations comprising thirteen species fro

Leptospirosis is been considered an important infectious disease that affects humans and animals worldwide. This review summarizes our current knowledge of bacterial attachment to extracellular matrix (ECM) components and discusses the possible role of these interactions for leptospiral pathogenesis. Leptospiral proteins show different binding specificity for ECM molecules: some are exclusive laminin-binding proteins (Lsa24/LfhA/LenA, Lsa27), while others have broader spectrum binding profiles (LigB, Lsa21, LipL53). These proteins may play a primary role in the colonization of host tissues. Mo

INTRODUCTION: The overarching objective of the Office of Naval Research sponsored Blast Load Assessment Sense and Test (BLAST) program was to quantify neurofunctional risk from repeated blast exposure. However, human studies have limitations in data collection that can only be addressed by animal models. To utilize a large animal model in this work, researchers developed an approach for scaling blast exposure data from animal to human-equivalent loading. For this study, energy interacting with the brain tissue was selected as a translation metric because of the hypothesized association between

Isatin (indol-2,3-dione) is an endogenous regulator found in humans and animals. It interacts with numerous target proteins and exhibits a wide range of biological activities, including neuroprotective action in animal models of Parkinson's disease (PD) induced by administration of neurotoxins MPTP (1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6- tetrahydropyridine) or rotenone. An antipsychotic drug haloperidol, which impairs neurotransmitter balance in the nigrostriatal pathway, models dopamine deficiency and promotes the development of motor disorders characteristic of PD.
