The effect of experimenter identification on (dis)obedience and its mechanisms.

Recent studies following Milgram's seminal experiment have provided insights into what neural, psychological, and contextual factors influence disobedience to immoral orders. According to the engaged followership model, greater identification with the experimenter leads to greater obedience. However, such results were not always replicated. It remains unclear how identifying with the person giving orders modulates (dis)obedience and related mechanisms. Therefore, the current study focussed on neurocognitive mechanisms and cultural factors related to identification with the experimenter to expl

Cancer-related identity and advanced old age - analysis of prostate cancer survivors after radical prostatectomy over the age of 75.

BACKGROUND: The struggle to incorporate the experience of suffering from PCa in their biography can be evident in men affected by PCa even years after the initial cancer diagnosis. Aim of this study was to assess the cancer-related identity and associated factors in men over 75 years affected by PCa and treated with radical prostatectomy to improve the understanding of cancer-related self-perception in older men. METHODS: 2,379 on average 82.2 ± 3.9 year-old prostate cancer survivors with a mean follow-up of 17.9 ± 3.7 after radical prostatectomy were asked to choose one of 5 cancer-related i

In health and unemployment: well-being impacts of joblessness on oneself and partners.

This paper examines the direct and indirect or vicarious (i.e., experienced through a partner's unemployment) relationship between unemployment and psychological well-being, shedding more light on why unemployment patterns may differ between women and men. To accomplish this, we tackle the potential endogeneity concern by employing an identification strategy designed to explore the associations between unemployment and mental health while reducing biased results. To our knowledge, this study is the first to employ this strategy to analyse both direct and indirect relationships. We utilize indi

The importance of the socio-historical context: similarities and differences in identity development and psychological adjustment across two cohorts of Spanish college emerging adults.

Identity is a psychosocial construct shaped by the generational context, reflecting culturally and historically specific patterns of self-development. This study explores and compares the identity development and psychological adjustment of two generations of emerging adults. The total sample comprised 2,819 college students (38% men, 62% women) from two cohorts surveyed: Ch1 (2015), of 1,301 emerging adults, 40.9% men, 59.1% women; Mage  = 20.06, SD = 2.03 and Ch2 (2020, which coincides with the COVID-19 pandemic), of 1,518 participants, 35.6% men, 64.4% women; Mage  = 20.48, SD = 2.48. Examining Associations Between Intimate Partner Violence-Related Brain Injury, Psychological Abuse, and Cognitive Functioning in Community Women.

PURPOSE: Intimate partner violence (IPV) has been associated with adverse physical, psychological, and cognitive consequences in women. Long-term effects of IPV on cognitive functioning are not well understood. We studied cognitive functioning of community-residing women who experienced physical and psychological IPV, on average eight and five years prior, respectively. Specifically, we investigated cognitive functioning in relation to both number of IPV-related mild brain injuries (BIs) and psychological abuse severity. METHODS: In a sample of 97 community dwelling women (age 19-69, mean = 3

Psychosocial factors behind addiction-a six-wave longitudinal comparison of at-risk gambling and drinking.

AIMS: Research indicates that shared and specific underlying factors influence different addictions, sometimes resulting in co-occurring problems. The evidence concerning risk and protective factors for gambling and alcohol addiction, along with their co-occurrence, remains ambiguous. To address this gap, this study will conduct longitudinal research to examine the factors associated with at-risk behaviours over time. METHODS: We utilize a sample of 18- to 75-year-old participants (N = 1530) from Finland. Participants were surveyed every six months between 2021 and 2023, covering six rounds o

Social frailty and the risk of progression from health to physical, psychological, and cognitive multimorbidity: a prospective multi-cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Social frailty, a state of vulnerability to social risk factors, has been linked to adverse physical, psychological, and cognitive outcomes. However, evidence on its role in the progression of multimorbidity across these domains is limited. This study examined social frailty in relation to transitions from a healthy state to physical, psychological, and cognitive conditions and to multimorbidity. METHODS: In this multi-cohort study across 24 countries in the USA, Europe, and Asia, middle-aged and older individuals with no preexisting physical, psychological, or cognitive condition

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the concept of psychological distress among nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Understanding its dimensions and characteristics of this phenomenon can enhance preparedness for future pandemics. Psychological distress has emerged as a significant mental health concern during the pandemic, with nursing students experiencing high levels of psychological distress caused by substantial disruptions in their educational environment. METHOD: This study employed the Schwartz-Barcott and Kim's hybrid concept analysis model, integrating a systemati

Pediatric vitiligo.

Vitiligo is a disease of pigment loss. Most investigators currently consider vitiligo to be a disorder that occurs as a result of autoimmune destruction of melanocytes, supported by identification of antimelanocyte antibodies in many patients, and the presence of comorbid autoimmune disease in patients with and family members of individuals with vitiligo. One-half of vitiligo cases are of childhood onset. This article presents a current overview of pediatric vitiligo including comorbidities of general health, psychological factors, therapeutic options, and long-term health considerations.

Exploring niacin skin flushing response in psychological screening of college students.

BACKGROUND: The psychological well-being of college students is a growing concern due to its impact on personal and academic outcomes. Traditional symptom-based scales for psychological health screening are often subjective and prone to misclassification. The niacin skin flushing response (NSFR), a physiologically grounded biomarker, has shown promise in identifying psychiatric conditions. This study explored the application of NSFR as an objective tool for psychological health screening among college students. METHODS: We recruited 633 college freshmen who completed the “College Student Menta

In addition, prognostic factors were determined for psychological distress after hip fracture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This hip fracture cohort data was derived from the Brabant Injury Outcome Surveillance, a multicenter longitudinal prospective cohort study. Hip fracture patients (≥65years) admitted to a hospital betwee

Political violence and child adjustment: longitudinal tests of sectarian antisocial behavior, family conflict, and insecurity as explanatory pathways.

Understanding the impact of political violence on child maladjustment is a matter of international concern. Recent research has advanced a social ecological explanation for relations between political violence and child adjustment. However, conclusions are qualified by the lack of longitudinal tests. Toward examining pathways longitudinally, mothers and their adolescents (M = 12.33, SD = 1.78, at Time 1) from 2-parent families in Catholic and Protestant working class neighborhoods in Belfast, Northern Ireland, completed measures assessing multiple levels of a social ecological model. Visual detection and identification are not the same: evidence from psychophysics and fMRI.

Sometimes object detection as opposed to identification is sufficient to initiate the appropriate action. To explore the neural origin of behavioural differences between the two tasks, we combine psychophysical measurements and fMRI, specifically contrasting shape detection versus identification of a figure. This figure consisted of Gabor elements being oriented differently from those in the background. We equalized performance levels for detection and identification by adjusting orientation differences accordingly for each observer. Hence, stimulus saliency was constant for both tasks allowin

Common sexual problems of children and adolescents.

The pediatrician is often expected by families to deal with sexual problems of children and adolescents. The physician should be able to identify problems and to guide parents in more meaningful communication and education of their children. Hopefully, he will be able to identify family conflicts and make the appropriate intervention or referral. He should be aware of his own sexual attitudes so as to avoid having his bias interfere with treatment. The childs behavior should not be isolated, but considered in the context of his family, his peers, and his own growth and development. Often, it i
