A new family of instance-level loss functions for improving instance-level segmentation and detection of white matter hyperintensities in routine clinical brain MRI.

In this study, we introduce "instance loss functions", a new family of loss functions designed to enhance the training of neural networks in the instance-level segmentation and detection of objects in biomedical image data, particularly those of varied numbers and sizes. Intended to be utilized conjointly with traditional loss functions, these proposed functions, prioritize object instances over pixel-by-pixel comparisons. The specific functions, the instance segmentation loss (Linstance), the instance center loss (Lcenter), the false instance rate loss (Lfalse), and the instance proximity los

Enhancing Major Depressive Disorder Diagnosis With Dynamic-Static Fusion Graph Neural Networks.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a debilitating, complex mental condition with unclear mechanisms hindering diagnostic progress. Research links MDD to abnormal brain connectivity using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Yet, existing fMRI-based MDD models suffer from limitations, including neglecting dynamic network traits, lacking interpretability, and struggling with small datasets. We present DSFGNN, a novel graph neural network framework addressing these issues for improved MDD diagnosis. DSFGNN employs a graph isomorphism encoder to model static and dynamic brain networks, ac

3D segmentation of nasopharyngeal carcinoma from CT images using cascade deep learning.

In the paper, we propose a new deep learning-based method for segmenting nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in the nasopharynx from three orthogonal CT images. The proposed method introduces a cascade strategy composed of two-phase manners. In CT images, there are organs, called non-target organs, which NPC never invades. Therefore, the first phase is to detect and eliminate non-target organ regions from the CT images. In the second phase, NPC is extracted from the remained regions in the CT images. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are applied to detect non-target organs and NPCs. The proposed

Digital atlas of fetal brain MRI.

BACKGROUND: Fetal MRI can be performed in the second and third trimesters. During this time, the fetal brain undergoes profound structural changes. Interpretation of appropriate development might require comparison with normal age-based models. Consultation of a hard-copy atlas is limited by the inability to compare multiple ages simultaneously. OBJECTIVE: To provide images of normal fetal brains from weeks 18 through 37 in a digital format that can be reviewed interactively. This will facilitate recognition of abnormal brain development. MATERIALS AND METHODS: T2-W images for the atlas were

Three-dimensional surface imaging from CT scans for the study of craniofacial dysmorphology.

Computer-assisted medical imaging technologies provide new tools for the study of congenital craniofacial deformities. Three-dimensional surface reconstructions have been developed to simplify the interpretation and improve the utility of CT scans of the head. While 3-D reconstructions initially were applied to assist clinical management of craniofacial deformities, these images now are finding utility in the study of unique anomalies, the definition of group characteristics for dysmorphic heads, the differentiation of similar phenotypes, and the documentation of the effects of cranial surgery

SAM-driven cross prompting with adaptive sampling consistency for semi-supervised medical image segmentation.

Semi-supervised learning (SSL) has achieved notable progress in medical image segmentation. To achieve effective SSL, a model needs to be able to efficiently learn from limited labeled data and effectively exploit knowledge from abundant unlabeled data. Recent developments in visual foundation models, such as the Segment Anything Model (SAM), have demonstrated remarkable adaptability with improved sample efficiency. To seamlessly harness foundation models in SSL, we propose a SAM-driven cross prompting framework with adaptive sampling and prompt consistency for semi-supervised medical image se

Classifying retinal images via vascular-optic disc cross-segmentation and attentive feature selection.

The prevalence of retinal disorders is rising at an alarming rate, posing a significant risk of irreversible blindness without timely intervention. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have enabled the development of automated screening systems for retinal image analysis. However, building robust models presents challenges due to inconsistencies in image acquisition, varying resolutions, and imbalanced class distributions. To address these issues, this research introduces a novel abnormality-aware attentive feature selection approach for classifying retinal images into three cat

Mitral regurgitation detection and central/eccentric classification using transformer-based deep learning in multi-view echocardiography.

BACKGROUND: Fully automated diagnostic echocardiography allows for broader screening, earlier diagnosis for patients with mitral regurgitation (MR). This feasibility study developed a deep learning (DL) framework to automatically detect MR in echocardiography videos and classify regurgitation samples into central or eccentric regurgitation. METHODS: We designed a Transformer-based deep learning model for fully automatic Doppler video detection of MR. This framework can automatically detect MR and classify central or eccentric regurgitation. The algorithm was trained, validated, and tested usi

A New Breast Border Extraction and Contrast Enhancement Technique with Digital Mammogram Images for Improved Detection of Breast Cancer.

Purpose: Breast cancer can be cured if diagnosed early, with digital mammography which is one of the most effective imaging modalities for early detection. However mammogram images often come with low contrast, high background noises and artifacts, making diagnosis difficult. The purpose of this research is to preprocess mammogram images to improve results with a computer aided diagnosis system. The focus is on three preprocessing methods: a breast border segmentation method; a contrast enhancement method; and a pectoral muscle removal method. Methods: The proposed breast border extraction met

Posterior tibial slope in medial opening-wedge high tibial osteotomy: 2-D versus 3-D navigation.

Although opening-wedge high tibial osteotomy (HTO) is used to correct deformities, it can simultaneously alter tibial slope in the sagittal plane because of the triangular configuration of the proximal tibia, and this undesired change in tibial slope can influence knee kinematics, stability, and joint contact pressure. Therefore, medial opening-wedge HTO is a technically demanding procedure despite the use of 2-dimensional (2-D) navigation. The authors evaluated the posterior tibial slope pre- and postoperatively in patients who underwent navigation-assisted opening-wedge HTO and compared post

Clinical priors-inspired privileged knowledge distillation for reliable pancreatic lesion classification.

Accurate classification of pancreatic lesions is critical for guiding treatment decisions, with computed tomography (CT) being the primary modality owing to its high spatial resolution. Although deep learning has advanced CT-based pancreatic lesion classification, its inherently low soft-tissue contrast complicates the diagnosis of challenging samples, such as small or isoattenuating lesions. Multi-modal learning is a promising alternative but is often clinically impractical, as it requires all modalities during inference and fails to fully leverage the clinically relevant complementary inform

Treatment-Aware Diffusion Probabilistic Model for Longitudinal MRI Generation and Diffuse Glioma Growth Prediction.

Diffuse gliomas are malignant brain tumors that grow widespread through the brain. The complex interactions between neoplastic cells and normal tissue, as well as the treatment-induced changes often encountered, make glioma tumor growth modeling challenging. In this paper, we present a novel end-to-end network capable of future predictions of tumor masks and multi-parametric magnetic resonance images (MRI) of how the tumor will look at any future time points for different treatment plans. Our approach is based on cutting-edge diffusion probabilistic models and deep-segmentation neural networks

LoG-staging: a rectal cancer staging method with LoG operator based on maximization of mutual information.

Deep learning methods have been migrated to rectal cancer staging as a classification process based on magnetic resonance images (MRIs). Typical approaches suffer from the imperceptible variation of images from different stage. The data augmentation also introduces scale invariance and rotation consistency problems after converting MRIs to 2D visible images. Moreover, the correctly labeled images are inadequate since T-staging requires pathological examination for confirmation. It is difficult for classification model to characterize the distinguishable features with limited labeled data. In t

Anatomy-inspired model for critical landmark localization in 3D spinal ultrasound volume data.

Three-dimensional (3D) spinal ultrasound imaging has demonstrated its promising potential in measuring spinal deformity through recent studies, and it is more suitable for massive early screening and longitudinal follow-up of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) compared with X-ray imaging due to its radiation-free superiority. Moreover, some deformities with low observability, such as vertebral rotation, in X-ray images can also be reflected by critical landmarks in 3D ultrasound data. In this paper, we propose a localization network (LLNet) to extract lamina in 3D ultrasound data, which has

A pictorial review of lung torsion using 3D CT cinematic rendering.

Lung torsion is the abnormal rotation of a lobe or lung around its bronchovascular pedicle. It most commonly occurs in the setting of pulmonary resection, though it has also been described after large-volume thoracentesis and video-assisted thoracic surgery, as well as spontaneously. Resulting ischemia can lead to infarction, making this an emergent diagnosis. As findings are often nonspecific, a high index of suspicion is required, especially in the postsurgical setting. 2D CT angiography findings are subtle and include direct signs of pedicle rotation on CT as well as indirect findings inclu

Uncertainty CNNs: A path to enhanced medical image classification performance.

The automated detection of tumors using medical imaging data has garnered significant attention over the past decade due to the critical need for early and accurate diagnoses. This interest is fueled by advancements in computationally efficient modeling techniques and enhanced data storage capabilities. However, methodologies that account for the uncertainty of predictions remain relatively uncommon in medical imaging. Uncertainty quantification (UQ) is important as it helps decision-makers gauge their confidence in predictions and consider variability in the model inputs. Numerous determinist
