Definition of a VR-based protocol to treat social phobia.

Social phobia is an anxiety disorder that is accessible to two forms of treatment yielding scientifically validated results: drugs and cognitive-behavioral therapies. Graded exposure to feared social situations is fundamental to obtain an improvement of the anxious symptoms. Traditionally, exposure therapies are done either in vivo or by imagining the situations. In vivo exposure is sometimes difficult to control and many patients have some difficulties in using imagination. Virtual reality (VR) seems to bring significant advantages. It allows exposures to numerous and varied situations. This …

[Experimental transmission of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus by Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi (Acarina:Ixodidae)].

We have conducted experiments to assess the ability of Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi tick to transmit the Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) and determine their reproductive cycle. The Rh. e. evertsi was infected by intracoelomic (transparietal and intra-anal) inoculation during the imaginal stases and by oral feeding on an infected viremic goat during imaginal and nymphal stases. The infection rate, transovarial and trans-stasial CCHF virus transmission were monitored for virus reisolation after suckling mice inoculation and the virus identified by ELISA and IFA for antigen detection. The neural correlates of inner speech and auditory verbal imagery in schizophrenia: relationship to auditory verbal hallucinations.

BACKGROUND: Auditory verbal hallucinations are thought to arise from the disordered monitoring of inner speech (thinking in words). We tested the hypothesis that a predisposition to verbal auditory hallucinations would be associated with an abnormal pattern of brain activation during tasks which involved the generation and monitoring of inner speech. METHOD: The neural correlates of tasks which engaged inner speech and auditory verbal imagery were examined using positron emission tomography in (a) schizophrenic patients with a strong predisposition to auditory verbal hallucinations (hallucina

Social tinkering generates complexity, but also system-scale fragility and collective delusions.

The hypothesis that human culture emerges through deliberate, decentralized social tinkering rather than random variation is persuasive. However, the hypothesis is ambiguous about the stability of the resulting structures. Expanding scale may increase fragility and normative conflict, and networks of socially constructed coordination spaces may amplify imaginative disconnection from reality. Consequently, system-scale risks arise that exceed the grasp of governable tinkering.

Temporal choroidal fissure cyst: a rare cause of temporal lobe epilepsy.

Only a few cases of temporal choroidal fissure cyst are reported. We describe a new case of an 8 years old girl who manifested complex partial seizure. The diagnosis was made by magnetic resonance imagining (MRI). The signal intensity of the cyst was identical to the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and the underlying hippocampus was compressed by the cyst. The seizures were medically controlled. The value of MRI in the diagnosis and medical treatment will be discussed.

Neuropsychology of autism.

Childhood autism is a syndrome characterized by a triad of abnormalities in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and imaginative activity. It is clinically heterogeneous, however, and probably represents a family of syndromes, each of which is the result of a different but related type of brain dysfunction. So far, there is no direct evidence for involvement of particular brain systems, although analogies to other disorders in humans and experimental animals do allow some plausible hypotheses.

Experiences of individuals who underwent Phantom Motor Imagery treatment to decrease phantom limb pain and the consequences on their daily functioning.

PURPOSE: Phantom Limb Pain (PLP) frequently occurs after limb amputation and often negatively influences daily functioning. Phantom Motor Imagery (PMI) treatment intends to decrease PLP by imagining phantom movements guided by extended reality techniques. The aim of this study was to investigate the experiences of individuals with PLP after limb amputation who underwent PMI treatment, and to explore the consequences of PMI treatment on daily functioning. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A qualitative study was performed, consisting of semi-structured interviews one month after PMI treatment among eight

The neural correlates of movement imagery performance in Parkinson's disease: Evidence of impairment and compensation.

Parkinson's Disease (PD) leads to significant deficits in the physical execution of movements. These deficits may stem in part from impaired processing of action representations, which are integral to the planning, monitoring, and execution of voluntary movement. Action representations can be examined using movement imagery. Here we examine whether PD affects movement imagery at the level of behaviour and neural activity. In particular, 20 people with PD and 20 controls completed a movement imagery task while electroencephalographic activity was recorded. Our data analysis focused on activity

Tropanes in natural products, syntheses, and drugs: some insights from the new millennium.

The term "tropane" refers to the 8-azabicyclo[3.2.1]octane core, first discovered in the tropane alkaloids produced by certain families of plants. These alkaloids, which are likely plant defense compounds, have well-precedented bioactivities such as muscarinic receptor antagonism and dopamine transporter (DAT) inhibition. The long-standing usefulness of alkaloids such as atropine, scopolamine, and cocaine has encouraged the incorporation of the tropane moiety into multiple other approved drugs, likely cementing its place as a privileged scaffold. Because of their diverse utility and efficacy,

World-making for a future with sentient AI.

The ways people imagine possible futures with artificial intelligence (AI) affects future world-making-how the future is produced through cultural propagation, design, engineering, policy, and social interaction-yet there has been little empirical study of everyday people's expectations for AI futures. We addressed this by analysing two waves (2021 and 2023) of USA nationally representative data from the Artificial Intelligence, Morality, and Sentience (AIMS) survey on the public's forecasts about an imagined future world with widespread AI sentience (total N = 2401). Average responses to six

Mind's eye in the Alzheimer's disease spectrum continuum.

BACKGROUND: Visual mental imagery (VMI) is the ability to represent stimuli in the mind without sensory visual input. Previous studies have shown alterations in VMI in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, VMI has not been investigated in the AD prodromal stage, mild cognitive impairment (MCI). OBJECTIVE: We investigated VMI ability in mild AD and MCI patients, hypothesizing that VMI ability could be compromised since early disease stage. METHODS: We enrolled 14 patients with mild AD, 19 amnestic MCI (aMCI), and 23 healthy control subjects (HC), matched for sex, age, and education. VMI assessme

Rehabilitation experiences following major lower limb amputation due to complications of vascular disease: a UK qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Rehabilitation experiences of lower limb amputees with poorer physical health have not been fully explored. This study aimed to qualitatively explore experiences of rehabilitation amongst patients who had recently undergone amputation due to complications of vascular disease. METHODS: Semi-structured, face-to-face interviews were conducted with 14 patients participating in the PLACEMENT randomised controlled feasibility trial (ISRCTN: 85710690; EudraCT: 2016-003544-37), which investigated the effectiveness of using a perineural catheter for postoperative pain relief following major l

Comparison of autonomic reactivity to trauma and nightmare imagery: A Pilot Study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Trauma-related nightmares (TRNs) are a hallmark symptom of PTSD and are highly correlated with PTSD severity and poor sleep quality. Given the salience and arousal associated with TRNs, they might be an effective target for imaginal exposures during Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy. As a first step in this line of research, the current study compared participants' emotional reactivity during recollection of TRNs to their recollection of the index traumatic event. METHODS: Seventeen trauma-exposed participants with clinical or sub-clinical PTSD who reported frequent TRNs engag

Reduced anterior hippocampal and ventromedial prefrontal activity when repeatedly retrieving autobiographical memories.

Research has reported that repeatedly retrieving a novel or imagined event representation reduces activity within brain regions critical for constructing mental scenarios, namely the anterior hippocampus and ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC). The primary aim of this investigation was to test if this pattern reported for imagined events would be found when repeatedly recollecting autobiographical memories. Twenty-four participants retrieved 12 pre-selected autobiographical memories four times while undergoing an fMRI scan. We used a region of interest approach to investigate how the anteri

Mental imagery in generalized anxiety disorder: A comparison with healthy control participants.

Mental imagery plays a prominent role across psychopathology. However, its quality and role in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) have not been examined as extensively as in other disorders. The goal of the present study was to obtain a better understanding of general imagery processes and individual differences in people with GAD. Adults with GAD (N = 31) were compared to a Healthy Control (HC) group (N = 32) across mental imagery domains as per Pearson, Deeprose, Wallace-Hadrill, Heyes, and Holmes (2013)'s framework: cognitive, general use/experience, and clinical. No differences were found

Externalization Errors of Olfactory Source Monitoring in Healthy Controls-An fMRI Study.

Using a combined approach of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and noninvasive brain stimulation (transcranial direct current stimulation [tDCS]), the present study investigated source memory and its link to mental imagery in the olfactory domain, as well as in the auditory domain. Source memory refers to the knowledge of the origin of mental experiences, differentiating events that have occurred and memories of imagined events. Because of a confusion between internally generated and externally perceived information, patients that are prone to hallucinations show decreased source me

Does Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Affect the Learning of a Fine Sequential Hand Motor Skill with Motor Imagery?

Learning a fine sequential hand motor skill, like playing the piano or learning to type, improves not only due to physical practice, but also due to motor imagery. Previous studies revealed that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and motor imagery independently affect motor learning. In the present study, we investigated whether tDCS combined with motor imagery above the primary motor cortex influences sequence-specific learning. Four groups of participants were involved: an anodal, cathodal, sham stimulation, and a control group (without stimulation). A modified discrete sequence

Cooperation in mind: Motor imagery of joint and single actions is represented in different brain areas.

In this study brain activity during motor imagery (MI) of joint actions, compared to single actions and rest conditions, was investigated using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first neuroimaging study which directly investigated the neural correlates of joint action motor imagery. Twenty-one healthy participants imagined three different motor tasks (dancing, carrying a box, wiping). Each imagery task was performed at two kinds: alone (single action MI) or with a partner (joint action MI). We hypothesized that to imagine a cooperative task

Pain empathy in schizophrenia: an fMRI study.

Although it has been proposed that schizophrenia is characterized by impaired empathy, several recent studies found intact neural responses on tasks measuring the affective subdomain of empathy. This study further examined affective empathy in 21 schizophrenia outpatients and 21 healthy controls using a validated pain empathy paradigm with two components: (i) observing videos of people described as medical patients who were receiving a painful sound stimulation treatment; (ii) listening to the painful sounds (to create regions of interest). The observing videos component incorporated experimen
