Addiction substitution and concurrent recovery in gambling disorder: Who substitutes and why?

OBJECTIVES: When individuals recover from gambling disorder, their involvement in other potentially addictive substances and behaviors may also subsequently increase (substitution) or decrease (concurrent recovery). The objectives of this study were to identify and compare recovery processes associated with substitution and concurrent recovery in gambling disorder. METHODS: A mixed-method study was conducted with 185 people who were recovered from gambling disorder. Semi-structured interviews were used to: (i) establish onset and recovery of gambling disorder as well as other substance and be

Understanding the Personality and Behavioral Mechanisms Defining Hypersexuality in Men Who Have Sex With Men.

INTRODUCTION: Hypersexuality has been conceptualized as sexual addiction, compulsivity, and impulsivity, among others, in the absence of strong empirical data in support of any specific conceptualization. AIM: To investigate personality factors and behavioral mechanisms that are relevant to hypersexuality in men who have sex with men. METHODS: A sample of 242 men who have sex with men was recruited from various sites in a moderate-size mid-western city. Participants were assigned to a hypersexuality group or a control group using an interview similar to the Structured Clinical Interview for

Familial pathways to early-onset suicide attempt: a 5.6-year prospective study.

IMPORTANCE: Suicide attempts are strong predictors of suicide, a leading cause of adolescent mortality. Suicide attempts are highly familial, although the mechanisms of familial transmission are not understood. Better delineation of these mechanisms could help frame potential targets for prevention. OBJECTIVE: To examine the mechanisms and pathways by which suicidal behavior is transmitted from parent to child. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this prospective study conducted from July 15, 1997, through June 21, 2012, a total of 701 offspring aged 10 to 50 years (mean age, 17.7 years) o

A sudden urge to buy online: How consumers' personality antecedents shape their impulsive online buying intent.

Impulsive online buying has become increasingly prominent among young adult consumers, particularly in digital environments characterized by immediacy, convenience, and low-friction decision-making. This study examines the associations between Dark Triad personality traits (Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy), self-efficacy, impulsivity, and impulsive online buying intent among university students in Lebanon. Grounded in the Stimulus-Organism-Response framework and supported by Personality Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and the Reference Point Model, the study conceptualizes perso

Impulse control disorders in adult psychiatric inpatients.

OBJECTIVE: The authors' goal was to examine the prevalence of impulse control disorders in psychiatric inpatients. METHOD: They used the Minnesota Impulsive Disorders Interview, a semistructured clinical interview assessing pathological gambling, trichotillomania, kleptomania, pyromania, intermittent explosive disorder, compulsive buying, and compulsive sexual behavior, to screen 204 consecutively admitted psychiatric inpatients. One hundred twelve of the inpatients were women (54.9%), and the mean age of the 204 inpatients was 40.5 years (SD=13.2, range=18-83). Patients whose screen was posi

Enhancing Postoperative Outcomes After Metabolic Bariatric Surgery: a Pilot Study of Inhibitory Control Training, Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation and Psychosocial Aftercare.

INTRODUCTION: Heightened food-specific impulsivity, associated with prefrontal cortex hypoactivity, may impair outcomes following metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS). This pilot study examined the feasibility of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) targeting the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) combined with an individualized food-specific inhibitory control training addressing behavioral impulsivity alongside psychosocial follow-up (FU) care to support early postoperative lifestyle adaptation. METHODS: Within 18 months post-MBS, n = 19 patients were randomized to 6 sessio

Distinct Chrna5 mutations link excessive alcohol use to types I/II vulnerability profiles and IPN GABAergic neurons.

Genome wide association and animal studies have implicated genetic variations in CHRNΑ5, encoding the α5 subunit-containing nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (α5*nAChRs), as a risk factor for developing alcohol use disorders (AUDs). To understand how α5*nAChR mutations may influence alcohol (EtOH) drinking behavior, we used a two-bottle choice procedure with intermittent access to alcohol in male and female transgenic mice expressing either the highly frequent human single nucleotide polymorphism (α5SNP/rs16969968) or a deletion of the Chrna5 gene (α5KO). AUDs-related preconsommatory traits (a

Cognitive flexibility correlates with gambling severity in young adults.

Although gambling disorder (GD) is often characterized as a problem of impulsivity, compulsivity has recently been proposed as a potentially important feature of addictive disorders. The present analysis assessed the neurocognitive and clinical relationship between compulsivity on gambling behavior. A sample of 552 non-treatment seeking gamblers age 18-29 was recruited from the community for a study on gambling in young adults. Gambling severity levels included both casual and disordered gamblers. All participants completed the Intra/Extra-Dimensional Set Shift (IED) task, from which the total

Risk factors for suicide completion in borderline personality disorder: a case-control study of cluster B comorbidity and impulsive aggression.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder is a major risk factor for suicidal behavior, yet prediction of suicide completion remains unclear. It has been proposed that impulsivity and aggression interact to increase suicide risk. Death by suicide in borderline personality disorder, then, may be the result of impulsivity, a core feature of the disorder, interacting with violent-aggressive tendencies. Using a case-control design, this study investigated clinical and behavioral risk factors for suicide completion in borderline personality disorder. METHOD: One hundred twenty subjects meeting D

The Structure, Covariates, and Etiology of Hypersexuality: Implications for Sexual Offending.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: A substantial increase in research on the structure, covariates, and etiology of hypersexuality has emerged during the last decade. It is the goal of this review to summarize and integrate this research and to indicate some practical implications for clinical and forensic practice, especially as applied to those who have sexually offended. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies from the last half-decade converge on the conclusion that hypersexuality has both problematic and high sexual drive components. Both aspects have consistently been found to be distributed dimensionally and not cat

Tobacco smoking related to childhood trauma mediated by cognitive control and impulsiveness in severe mental disorders.

BACKGROUND: People with severe mental disorders (SMDs) show an increased prevalence of tobacco smoking compared to the general population. Tobacco smoking and other adult adverse health behaviors have been associated with traumatic experiences in childhood. In the present study we investigated the relationship between childhood trauma and tobacco smoking in people with SMDs, including the possible mediating role of cognitive- and personality characteristics, i.e. cognitive control, impulsiveness, affective lability and self-esteem. METHODS: Enrolled in the study were 871 participants with sch

Deficient neural activity subserving decision-making during reward waiting time in intertemporal choice in adult attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

AIM: Impulsivity, which significantly affects social adaptation, is an important target behavioral characteristic in interventions for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Typically, people are willing to wait longer to acquire greater rewards. Impulsivity in ADHD may be associated with brain dysfunction in decision-making involving waiting behavior under such situations. We tested the hypothesis that brain circuitry during a period of waiting (i.e., prior to the acquisition of reward) is altered in adults with ADHD. METHODS: The participants included 14 medication-free adults wit

Should pathological gambling be considered an addictive disorder?

Although pathological gambling is a relatively common disorder, there are only limited data available about the validity of its diagnosis as an impulse control disorder. Interestingly, there is no single conceptual widely accepted model that adequately accounts for the multiple biological, psychological and ecological variables contributing to the development of pathological gambling. In this paper, the authors demonstrate aspects of addictive behavior of pathological gambling. It is suggested that despite conceptual difficulties associated with the variable of self-control, contemporary resea

Impulsivity and methamphetamine use.

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between methamphetamine (meth) use and impulsivity in a sample of 385 HIV-negative heterosexually identified meth users. Participants who scored highest on a self-report measure of impulsivity were compared with those who scored lower in terms of background characteristics, meth use patterns, use of alcohol and other illicit drugs, sexual risk behavior, and psychiatric health variables. Methamphetamine users in the high impulsivity group were younger, less educated, used larger quantities of meth, were more likely to be binge users, had

Self-regulation in adults with intermittent explosive disorder and a history of suicide attempts.

Both suicide attempts and aggression aim to cause harm and are associated with numerous personal and societal consequences but differ on intended targets. Aggression towards others is associated with increased risk of suicidal behavior. Research has demonstrated commonalities with impulsiveness and affect regulation for both. This study's purpose was to compare self-regulation between those meeting criteria for a psychiatric condition characterized by unplanned aggression (intermittent explosive disorder [IED]), a lifetime history of a suicide attempt (SA), and those with both (IED + SA), as w

Interactions and implications of Fuzzy-Trace theory for risk taking behaviors in bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: According to Fuzzy-Trace Theory (FTT), qualitative, bottom-line, "gist" reasoning leads to less risk taking and more mature decision-making, less easily swayed by emotions than quantitative, detail-oriented, "verbatim" reasoning. In Bipolar disorder deleterious risky behaviors are common. Prior research confirmed the relationships posited between FTT and risk taking. We aim to understand whether FTT acts upon risk taking in the manner proposed in the FTT framework, namely, that (a) gist "values" mediate the role of "categorical gist". Furthermore, the roles of mania and impulsivity

Emotion-related impulsivity and risky decision-making: A systematic review and meta-regression.

Emotion-related impulsivity, the trait-like tendency toward regrettable behavior during states of high emotion, is a robust predictor of internalizing and externalizing psychopathology. Despite substantial evidence that emotion-related impulsivity is important transdiagnostically, relatively little is known about its cognitive correlates. This systematic review and meta-regression investigates one such candidate, risky decision-making. We analyzed 195 effect sizes from 51 studies of 14,957 total participants, including 105 newly calculated effect sizes that were not reported in the original pu
