Human plague in India, August-October, 1994.

As of 9 October, the total number of fatalities in India due to plague was 55 (52 from Surat city and 3 from New Delhi). Reasons for the low case-fatality ratio remain to be determined and will require more detailed and reliable clinical and laboratory information. Additional studies into the patterns of transmission in the infected areas are underway or anticipated. By 14 October reports of both suspect and confirmed cases had decreased. The area around the Beed district in the state of Maharashtra was also declared as "infected" under the definition of the International Health Regulations. A…

Influenza surveillance in Pune, India, 1978-90.

Continuous surveillance of influenza was carried out in Pune between 1978 and 1990. Most of the cases were identified during investigation of 16 outbreaks of influenza in Pune over this period. The majority of cases were children. Ten of the outbreaks occurred during rainy seasons. A total of 290 isolates consisting of several antigenic variants of influenza type A (H3N2), type A (H1N1), and type B viruses were isolated from throat/nasal swabs that were processed in chick embryos and MDCK cell culture and identified using the haemagglutination inhibition test. These variants circulated every y

Male genital tract tumors in Punjab, India.

A total of 95,797 tissue specimens were submitted to our laboratory for histopathological examination during the 21-year period from January 1964 to December 1984. Out of 21,281 cases diagnosed as tumors, 9,254 were found in the male population, comprising 6,846 malignant neoplasms and 2,408 benign neoplasms. There were 1,175 tumors of the male genital tract of which 1,118 were malignant and 57 were benign. The incidence of male genital tract cancer represented 16.33% of male malignancies. The relative frequency of malignant tumors of various organs in the male genital tract was penis, 42.49%;

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in India (1971-1990).

Thirty cases including 20 definite and 10 probable cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) seen in India between 1971 and 1990 are reported. Demographic analysis has shown similarities to the previously published reports from other parts of the world. Though 21 (70%) of cases were from two centers--Bombay and Bangalore-, suggesting clustering, this seems to be more apparent than real. One subject worked in the medical field, where possibility of iatrogenic transmission could not be ruled out. None of the cases had positive family history of CJD. There is no epidemiological data of CJD from In…

Sickle cell disease in Orissa State, India.

A study of 131 patients with homozygous sickle cell (SS) disease in Orissa State, India, indicated that, compared with Jamaican patients, Indian patients have higher frequencies of alpha thalassaemia, higher fetal haemoglobin, total haemoglobin, and red cell counts, and lower mean cell volume, mean cell haemoglobin concentration, and reticulocyte counts. Indian patients have a greater frequency and later peak incidence of splenomegaly, and hypersplenism is common. Painful crises and dactylitis are not uncommon in Indian patients but chronic leg ulceration is rare. Homozygous sickle cell diseas…

Interstitial Lung Diseases treatment prescription practices among pulmonologists in India: A prospective multicentre observational study (India-ILD care study).

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: There is limited data on prescription behaviour and compliance with interstitial lung disease (ILD) guidelines among pulmonologists. This study aimed to evaluate ILDs treatment prescription behaviour in India. METHODS: Prescriptions of treatment-naive ILD patients from 13 tertiary care hospitals were reviewed and classified as guideline compliant (GCP) or non-compliant (GNCP) for pharmacological and non-pharmacological components. Change in forced vital capacity (FVC), diffusing capacity (DLCO), and six-minute walk distance (6-MWD) at 6 and 12 months were compared b…

First molecular confirmed patient of alveolar echinococcosis in India: Case report from a tertiary care hospital in North India.

Alveolar echinococcosis, caused by Echinococcus multilocularis, is rare in India. We present the first molecularly confirmed AE case from Kashmir, India who presented with a hepatic mass mimicking metastatic malignancy. Imaging revealed a large liver lesion with intrahepatic biliary obstruction. Cytological examination showed necrosis and laminated membranes without hooklets or brood capsules. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) identified E. multilocularis. The patient underwent albendazole therapy and right hepatectomy, but her condition deteriorated due to post-hepatectomy liver failure, leadin…

Secondary prevention with a structured semi-interactive stroke prevention package in INDIA (SPRINT INDIA): a multicentre, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: There is a high burden of stroke, including recurrent stroke, in India. We aimed to assess the effect of a structured semi-interactive stroke prevention package in patients with subacute stroke to reduce recurrent strokes, myocardial infarction, and death. METHODS: This was a multicentre, randomised, clinical trial conducted in 31 centres of the Indian Stroke Clinical Trial Network (INSTRuCT). Adult patients with first stroke and access to a mobile cellular device were randomly allocated (1:1) to intervention and control groups by the research coordinators at each centre using a c…

National health policy for diabetes in children in India: The West Bengal model transforming type 1 diabetes care in India.

On 30 April 2026, the Government of India incorporated diabetes in children within national health policy framework under Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) Version 2.0 and released national guideline for its implementation. The policy draws substantially on the evidence generated from the West Bengal model which is a sustainable, scalable, government-supported public health model for Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) care. It mandates establishment of dedicated diabetes clinics for children and adolescents in every district hospital across the country, supported by federal funding and implemented th…

A multidimensional analysis of fall risk among older adults in India: evidence from the longitudinal ageing study in India (LASI).

BACKGROUND: Falls are a major public health concern among older adults in India. While earlier studies using LASI data have identified some risk factors, they did not account for key geriatric syndromes, physical performance, and functional status. This study aims to comprehensively examine the determinants of falls among older adults using nationally representative LASI Wave 1 data. METHODS: We analysed data from 26,780 community-dwelling individuals aged ≥ 60 years from LASI Wave 1. Falls were self-reported. Covariates included socio-demographics, comorbidities, ADL/IADL, cognition, depress…

Tracking KP.2 SARS-CoV-2 Variant in India and the Clinical Profile of KP.2 Cases in Maharashtra, India.

BACKGROUND: Following the emergence of the JN.1 SARS-CoV-2 variant, variants with key mutations in the spike protein, such as L455F, F456L, and R346T, were identified. In early January 2024, the KP.2 (JN.1.11.1.2) variant was first identified in clinical samples. Its increasing global prevalence has raised concerns over its transmission and clinical impact. The study investigates KP.2*'s (*indicates KP.2 and all its sub-lineages) spread and clinical severity in Maharashtra. METHODS: This study involved 5,173 Indian SARS-CoV-2 whole genome sequences with collection dates between November 1, 20…

Prevalence of depression among elderly women in India-An intersectional analysis of the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI), 2017-2018.

Epidemiological transition in India shows a shift in disease burden from youth to the elderly. As Life Expectancy increases, a greater burden is placed on the state, society, and families in India. Mental health disorders are insidious, debilitating Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) that afflict people, their families, and generations down the line. Globally, depression is the leading cause of mental health-related disability. It is estimated that mental illness contributes to 4.7% of Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) in India. It is predicted that by 2026, the elderly's sex ratio will inc…
