[An example of the application of factorial analysis of correspondences to infant mortality and its prevention in a rural area of West Africa].

A retrospective study through questionnaire was made among over 800 women of a Pre-Sahel region of Mali. It confirmed the very high infant and child mortality in this population: over 250% mortality under 1 year of age and over 400% under 6 years of age. The factorial analysis of correspondences proved adequate to determine the main characteristics of the local mortality pattern. In chronological order, the most important causes are obstetrical factors (1st day of life), umbilical tetanus (1 week to 1 month of age), malaria (1 month to 1 year of age), pneumopathies (including pertussis and lun

Regional inequality in infant RSV morbidity and mortality burden in the era of expanded RSV passive immunisation: a global projection modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of acute lower respiratory infection (ALRI) in infants, with low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) bearing a disproportionately high burden. While novel RSV prophylactic products including long-acting monoclonal antibodies and a maternal vaccine are being rolled out for protecting the general infant population in high-income countries, implementation in LMICs is only expected by 2028, potentially exacerbating health inequities. We aimed to assess regional inequality in infant RSV disease burden with and without the implementatio

Prayer, politics, and policy related to age-adjusted cancer, heart disease, infant mortality, and COVID-19 death Rates, U.S. states 2018-2021.

The role of religion and politics in the responses to the coronavirus pandemic raises the question of their influence on the risk of other diseases. This study focuses on age-adjusted death rates of cancer, heart disease, and infant mortality per 1000 live births before the pandemic (2018-2019) and COVID-19 in 2020-2021. Eight hypothesized predictors of health effects were considered by examining their correlation to age-adjusted death rates and indicators of health behavior among U.S. states, percentage who pray once or more daily, Republican attitudes and influence on state health policies a…

Maternal anaemia and risk of neonatal and infant mortality in low- and middle-income countries: a secondary analysis of 45 national datasets.

BACKGROUND: Anaemia in pregnancy has been recognised worldwide as a growing public health concern and an important cause of adverse neonatal outcomes. However, only a limited number of studies have been done in low-income settings, which have the highest prevalence of anaemia. We aimed to investigate the association between maternal anaemia and neonatal and infant mortality in low- and middle-income countries. METHODS: Secondary analysis of pooled data from 45 national demographic and health surveys (2010-2020). We included all women between 15 and 49 years old, who had singleton live birth w…

Maternal Bereavement the Year Before or During Pregnancy and Total and Cause-Specific Infant Mortality: A Cohort Study From Denmark and Sweden.

OBJECTIVE: We analyzed the associations between maternal bereavement the year before or during pregnancy and total and cause-specific infant mortality (IM). METHODS: We studied live singleton births from the Danish (1978-2008) and Swedish Medical Birth Registers (1973-2006; N = 5,114,246). Information on maternal sociodemographic, pregnancy-related, and health-related factors, and death of family members was obtained from nationwide registers. RESULTS: Among children of mothers with register links to family members and without the considered IM risk factors, 110,993 (2.76%) were exposed and …

Causes of death and infant mortality rates among full-term births in the United States between 2010 and 2012: An observational study.

BACKGROUND: While the high prevalence of preterm births and its impact on infant mortality in the US have been widely acknowledged, recent data suggest that even full-term births in the US face substantially higher mortality risks compared to European countries with low infant mortality rates. In this paper, we use the most recent birth records in the US to more closely analyze the primary causes underlying mortality rates among full-term births. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Linked birth and death records for the period 2010-2012 were used to identify the state- and cause-specific burden of infant m…

Fetal growth, stillbirth, infant mortality and other birth outcomes near UK municipal waste incinerators; retrospective population based cohort and case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Some studies have reported associations between municipal waste incinerator (MWI) exposures and adverse birth outcomes but there are few studies of modern MWIs operating to current European Union (EU) Industrial Emissions Directive standards. METHODS: Associations between modelled ground-level particulate matter ≤10 μm in diameter (PM10) from MWI emissions (as a proxy for MWI emissions) within 10 km of each MWI, and selected birth and infant mortality outcomes were examined for all 22 MWIs operating in Great Britain 2003-10. We also investigated associations with proximity of resi…

Infant and toddler trauma patients have similar associated risk of complications and mortality at pediatric-only versus combined pediatric-adult trauma centers.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has demonstrated that pediatric-onlyhospitals (POHs) and combined pediatric-adult trauma centers (CPACs) have comparable outcomes in generalized pediatric trauma populations. However, infants and toddlers have distinct injuries and physiology that may be infrequently seen at CPACs. This study compared pediatric trauma patients (PTPs) ≤2 years old treated at POHs versus CPACs, hypothesizing similar associated risk of mortality and in-hospital complications between hospital types. METHODS: The 2017 to 2023 TQIP database was queried for PTPs ≤2 years old. Patients w

Mortality and morbidity in very low birth weight infants from twin pregnancies in ireland: a national cohort analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Twin pregnancies contribute disproportionately to neonatal morbidity and mortality, primarily due to preterm birth and very low birth weight (VLBW). While studies have yielded conflicting findings on VLBW twins versus singletons, limited research exists in Ireland. This study examines whether survival, neonatal characteristics, and outcomes differ between VLBW twins and singletons in a national cohort. METHODS: A secondary analysis was conducted using anonymised data from the National Perinatal Epidemiology Centre (NPEC) VLBW audit. The study included all liveborn VLBW infants (

Spatial patterns of mortality in low birth weight infants at term and its determinants in the State of São Paulo, Brazil.

OBJECTIVE: Low birth weight (LBW) is a public health problem strongly associated with infant mortality. This study aimed to identify the spatial distribution of infant mortality in newborns with LBW (750-2,500 g) at term (≥37 weeks of gestation), due to their being small for gestational age, analyzing its association with mother-related determinants, as well as to identify priority areas of mortality in the State of São Paulo, 2010-2019. METHODS: Infant mortality rate was analyzed in the division of neonatal mortality and postneonatal mortality of newborns with LBW at term. The empirical Baye…

The Chest Radiographic Thoracic Area Can Serve as a Prediction Marker for Morbidity and Mortality in Infants With Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia.

Objective: Valid postnatal prediction parameters for neonates with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) are lacking, but recently, the chest radiographic thoracic area (CRTA) was proposed to predict survival with high sensitivity. Here, we evaluated whether the CRTA correlated with morbidity and mortality in neonates with CDH and was able to predict these with higher sensitivity and specificity than prenatal observed-to-expected (O/E) lung-to-head ratio (LHR). Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, all neonates with CDH admitted to our institution between 2013 and 2019 were included. Th

Postnatal RBC arachidonic and docosahexaenoic acids deficiencies are associated with higher risk of neonatal morbidities and mortality in preterm infants.

Arachidonic (AA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids are essential for the health and development of the neonate. Red blood cell (RBC) fatty acids were analyzed in 583 very low birth weight (VLBW) infants and 274 term infants using capillary gas chromatography. VLBW infants exhibited significantly lower RBC AA (13.0 ± 0.89 vs. 13.5 ± 0.98) and DHA (3.77 ± 0.60 vs. 3.80 ± 0.62), but higher n6:n3 ratio (3.97 ± 0.46 vs. 3.63 ± 0.37) than term infants. In VLBW infants, DHA was lower in those born with small for gestational age (3.69 ± 0.57 vs. 3.86 ± 0.58) and those who suffered from neonatal sepsis (
