Knowledge and practices related to plague in an endemic area of Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Plague is a virulent zoonosis reported most commonly from Sub-Saharan Africa. Early treatment with antibiotics is important to prevent mortality. Understanding knowledge gaps and common behaviors informs the development of educational efforts to reduce plague mortality. METHODS: A multi-stage cluster-sampled survey of 420 households was conducted in the plague-endemic West Nile region of Uganda to assess knowledge of symptoms and causes of plague and health care-seeking practices. RESULTS: Most (84%) respondents were able to correctly describe plague symptoms; approximately 75% l

Moderator effect of sex in the clustering of treatment-seeking patients with gambling problems.

BACKGROUND: There are no studies based on a person-centered approach addressing sex-related differences in the characteristics of treatment-seeking patients with gambling disorder (GD). The main objective of the current study is to identify empirical clusters of GD based on several measures of the severity of gambling behavior, and considering the potential role of patient sex as a moderator. METHODS: An agglomerative hierarchical clustering method was applied to an adult sample of 512 treatment-seeking patients (473 men and 39 women) by using a combination of the Schwarz Bayesian Information

Does respondent driven sampling alter the social network composition and health-seeking behaviors of illicit drug users followed prospectively?

Respondent driven sampling (RDS) was originally developed to sample and provide peer education to injection drug users at risk for HIV. Based on the premise that drug users' social networks were maintained through sharing rituals, this peer-driven approach to disseminate educational information and reduce risk behaviors capitalizes and expands upon the norms that sustain these relationships. Compared with traditional outreach interventions, peer-driven interventions produce greater reductions in HIV risk behaviors and adoption of safer behaviors over time, however, control and intervention gro

Associations Between Personality Traits and Energy Balance Behaviors in Emerging Adulthood: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Internalizing and externalizing personality traits are robust risk factors for substance use and mental health, and personality-targeted interventions are effective in preventing substance use and mental health problems in youth. However, there is limited evidence for how personality relates to other lifestyle risk factors, such as energy balance-related behaviors, and how this might inform prevention efforts. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine concurrent cross-sectional associations between personality traits (ie, hopelessness, anxiety sensitivity, impulsivity, and sensation

Explaining Rural Help-Seeking Processes in Community-Based Prevention: A Critical Interactionist Approach.

This study examined a community-led effort to develop and strengthen local prevention systems to promote child and family well-being and enhance access to protective supports within a rural community context. We utilized a community-based participatory action and theory-driven research approach with an aim of understanding how community norms explained family help-seeking behavior. Applying a critical interactionist framework, community members in one rural Midwestern area defined the drivers of local norms and explained how those norms shaped access to and use of community-based family suppor

Barriers to biomedical care: Qualitative insights into health-seeking behaviors and systemic challenges among people affected by leprosy in Tanzanian communities.

BACKGROUND: Delayed diagnosis in leprosy reflects both how people interpret symptoms and seek care, and how effectively health systems recognize and manage the disease. Qualitative evidence from Tanzania remains limited on how the interaction between patients and health care workers affect provision of care to people affected by leprosy in a timely manner. The main aim of this study was to explore health-seeking behaviors and systemic challenges affecting access to biomedical care among people affected by leprosy in selected Tanzanian communities. METHODS: Ethics Statement: Ethical approval f

Using the phenomenology of retrieval failures to understand curiosity for inaccessible and unavailable knowledge.

Curiosity arises from metacognitive evaluations of existing knowledge and drives information-seeking behaviors. Past research examining curiosity when retrieval fails used measures of confidence, Feeling-of-Knowing, and Tip-of-the-Tongue states (Brooks et al., 2021; Dubey & Griffiths, 2020; Metcalfe et al., 2017). The present study examines curiosity for irretrievable information by employing phenomenological states of memory failures (Umanath et al., 2025). Participants answered general knowledge questions and selected a phenomenological category to represent any retrieval failure experience,

Associations of informant-based sleep reports with Alzheimer's disease pathologies.

PURPOSE: Recent studies have found associations of increased brain amyloid beta (Aβ) accumulation and several abnormal sleep-wake patterns, including shorter latency and increased fragmentation in preclinical Alzheimer's disease (AD). There is little known about the relationship between sleep and tau. The objective of this study was to understand the associations of both tau and Aβ with early signs of sleep and night-time behavior changes in clinically normal elderly adults. Specifically, we have addressed the question of how informant-based subjective sleep reports are linked to regional [18F

Young males in crisis: pathways, usage and acceptability of an online messenger based psychosocial counselling service.

INTRODUCTION: Boys and young men face an elevated risk of mental health problems and suicidality, yet they remain less likely than their female peers to seek professional help. Online counselling services such as krisenchat offer low-threshold support and may help reduce gender-specific barriers, but little is known about how young men use these services. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates male krisenchat users in comparison to other users, focusing on demographics, utilization patterns, satisfaction, chat topics, and barriers to help-seeking behavior, in order to generate insights for improv
