Effectiveness of dog collars impregnated with 4% deltamethrin in controlling visceral leishmaniasis in Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidade: Phlebotominae) populations.

BACKGROUND: There is little information on the effect of using deltamethrin-impregnated dog collars for the control of canine visceral leishmaniasis. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of 4% deltamethrin-impregnated collars (Scalibor®) in controlling visceral leishmaniasis in Lutzomyia longipalpis by comparing populations in intervention and non-intervention areas. METHODS: Phlebotomine flies were captured over 30 months in four neighbourhoods with intense visceral leishmaniasis transmission in Fortaleza and Montes Claros. We calculated the r

[Strategy for determining a baseline in areas of vector interruption for Chagas disease].

Objectives Present a strategy to determine the baseline in endemic areas in the process of vector interruption for Chagas disease (CHD). Methods A social and environmental questionnaire and an entomological survey evaluated the physical conditions of dwellings, the inhabitants' knowledge of CHD, the entomological triatomine indicators and the statistical relationship among these variables. Results Colonization and natural infection with Trypanosoma cruzi exist in Rhodnius prolixus, the principal vector of CHD in Colombia. Colonization was related to palm-thatched houses constructed with adobe

Reducing visceral leishmaniasis by insecticide impregnation of bed-nets, Bangladesh.

The effect of insecticide-treated materials on reducing visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is disputable. In Bangladesh, we evaluated the effect of a community-based intervention with insecticide impregnation of existing bed-nets in reducing VL incidence. This intervention reduced VL by 66.5%. Widespread bed-net impregnation with slow-release insecticide may control VL in Bangladesh.

Leishmaniasis sand fly vector density reduction is less marked in destitute housing after insecticide thermal fogging.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide thermal fogging (ITF) is a tool to control vector borne diseases. Insecticide application success for vector control has been associated with housing materials and architecture. Vector abundance is correlated with weather changes. Nevertheless, housing quality and weather impacts on vector abundance have been unaccounted for in most New World insecticide control trials for leishmaniasis vectors. METHODS: We conducted a 15 month insecticide control trial that included two deltamethrin [6 mg a.i.m-2] based ITF interventions in 12 of 24 monitored houses at Trinidad de Las

Dispersal and memory of sand flies in an endemic area of cutaneous leishmaniasis, southern Brazil.

The dispersal of and the existence of memory in sand flies were measured in a transmission area of cutaneous leishmaniasis, in the municipality of Bandeirantes, Paraná, Brazil. Sand flies were caught in a rural area, with Shannon trap installed in the forest and three Falcão traps installed in a human-inhabited environment (HIE) and three others in an impacted environment presently uninhabited by humans (EUH), from 1800 to 0600 hours. The captured sand flies were marked with yellow, blue, or red fluorescent powder, according to the environments where they were captured. All marked sand flies w

Current epidemiological trends for Chagas disease in Latin America and future challenges in epidemiology, surveillance and health policy.

Chagas disease, named after Carlos Chagas, who first described it in 1909, exists only on the American Continent. It is caused by a parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi, which is transmitted to humans by blood-sucking triatomine bugs and via blood transfusion. Chagas disease has two successive phases: acute and chronic. The acute phase lasts six-eight weeks. Several years after entering the chronic phase, 20-35% of infected individuals, depending on the geographical area, will develop irreversible lesions of the autonomous nervous system in the heart, oesophagus and colon, and of the peripheral nervous

Risk factors for intradomiciliary infestation by the Chagas disease vector Triatoma dimidiatain Jutiapa, Guatemala.

Seventeen variables were evaluated as possible risk factors for the intradomiciliary infestation with Triatoma dimidiata in 644 houses in Jutiapa, Guatemala. During 2004 the houses were assessed for vector presence and evaluated for hygiene, cluttering, material comfort, construction conditions and number of inhabitants, among other factors. Chi-square analysis detected significant associations between vector presence and eight variables related to domestic sanitary and construction conditions. Log-linear models showed that regardless of the age of the house, the odds of vector presence were 4

Threshold conditions for the persistence of plague transmission in urban rats.

In this article we derive a mathematical expression characterizing the tendency for Yersinia pestis, the etiologic agent of plague, to become established in an urban rat population upon introduction, and evaluate this risk for several cities. The expression gives a threshold condition for the persistence of Y. pestis transmission in terms of measurable attributes of a local urban rat population: the average flea density and the rat colony size. If the local rat and flea populations exceed this threshold, plague circulation is predicted to continue; if not, it will burn out of its own accord. T

[Control of phlebotomine sandflies and the latest development in this field].

Phlebotomine sandflies make people uncomfortable because of biting and because they transmit various diseases. Especially, leishmaniasis is a serious public health problem in a number of countries, and requires control management. No effective control methods have been found for immature sandflies. On the contrary, the studies on destruction and modification of their habitats have found to be suitable for mature sandflies. Barrier spraying method recommended for exophilic sandflies are generally unsustainable and uneconomical. Although residual insecticide spraying of dwellings is successful i

[Natural infection of Lutzomyia longipalpis by Leishmania sp. in Teresina, Piauí State, Brazil].

In Brazil, control of the vector Lutzomyia longipalpis is one of the main strategies used to limit the expansion of American visceral leishmaniasis. However, studies on the ecology of this sand fly are rare, especially regarding its natural infection with species of Leishmania. A study of the natural infection of Lu. longipalpis by Leishmania sp. was carried out in the Bela Vista neighborhood in the city of Teresina, Piauí State, Brazil, an important area of American visceral leishmaniasis transmission. From February 2004 to January 2005, sand flies were captured with CDC light traps. Approxim

Repellence of the red bud borer Resseliella oculiperda from grafted apple trees by impregnation of rubber budding strips with essential oils.

The red bud borer Resseliella oculiperda (Rübs.) is a pest insect of apple trees when rootstocks are grafted with scion buds by 'shield budding'. The female midges are attracted to the wounds of the grafted buds where they lay their eggs. The larvae feed on the cambium and destroy the buds completely or partially, leading to bad union of the buds with the rootstocks. Budding strips are used very often by growers to bind scion buds to rootstocks. These strips cannot prevent midges from reaching the damaged tissue. Chemical treatments applied to the grafts and other types of strip do not provide

Chagas disease in Andean countries.

The Andean Countries' Initiative (ACI) for controlling Chagas disease was officially created in 1997 within the framework of the Hipolito Unanue Agreement (UNANUE) between the Ministries of Health of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. Its objective was to interrupt transmission via vector and transfusion in the region, taking into account that there are 12.5 million people at risk in the four Andean countries forming the initiative in the area and around 3 million people are infected by Trypanosoma cruzi. The progress of control activities for the vector species present in the Andean sub-

Evaluation of protective efficacy of K-OTAB impregnated bednets for cutaneous leishmaniasis control in Southeast Anatolia-Turkey.

Large-scale field trials were performed in an endemic focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis in both urban and rural settlements of Sanliurfa City, SE Anatolia, Turkey, to evaluate the efficacy of insecticide impregnated bednets. An intervention field trial promoting the use of K-OTAB (deltamethrin-tablet formulation) impregnated bednets by the local inhabitants of five quarters for cutaneous leishmaniasis was performed between July 2000 and July 2001. The aim was to examine the monthly and annual efficacy of such bednets in controlling cutaneous leishmaniasis and to compare effect of impregnated be

Chagas infection transmission control: situation of transfusional transmission in Brazil and other countries of Latin America.

The transmission of the transfusion-associated Chagas disease is an important mechanism of its dissemination in several Latin American countries. The transmission risk depends on five factors: prevalence of infection in blood donors, degree of serological coverage, sensibility of used tests, safety of obtained results and infection risk. The Southern Cone Iniciative set off by the Pan-American Health Organization, in 1991, is contributing to the implementation of blood law in each endemic country, and to reduce the risk of transfusional transmission of this horrible disease. Despite the clear

[Control of onchocerciasis vectors in West Africa: description of the logistics adapted for a large-scale public health program].

The Onchocerciasis Control Programme (OCP) in West Africa, launched in 1974, includes 11 participating countries and covers more than one million square kilometres. The aim of the OCP is to control blinding onchocerciasis (river blindness) which is caused by the savannah strain of Onchocerca volvulus transmitted by the Simulium damnosum complex. There is no effective macrofilaricide, so vector control to prevent the transmission of the parasite remains the method of choice, despite the availability of ivermectin, a drug which controls ocular morbidity. The potential value of vector control has

Criteria for the selection of larvicides by the Onchocerciasis Control Programme in west Africa.

One of the weekly decisions the Onchocerciasis Control Programme has to make, in its operations in 11 west African countries, is the selection of one insecticide out of the six used that is most appropriate to the river stretches to be treated. This decision depends on several criteria, linked not only to the compounds themselves but also the hydrological conditions and blackfly populations involved. Given the great number of breeding sites (gites) to be treated, in 23,000 km of rivers at the height of the rainy season, this paper identifies the parameters needed to facilitate the choice of in

Integrated control of vector-borne diseases of livestock--pyrethroids: panacea or poison?

Tick- and tsetse-borne diseases cost Africa approximately US$4-5 billion per year in livestock production-associated losses. The use of pyrethroid-treated cattle to control ticks and tsetse promises to be an increasingly important tool to counter this loss. However, uncontrolled use of this technology might lead to environmental damage, acaricide resistance in tick populations and a possible exacerbation of tick-borne diseases. Recent research to identify, quantify and to develop strategies to avoid these effects are highlighted.

Fungal contamination, mycotoxins, histamine, and allergen-related immunoreactivity in edible insects and insect-fortified complementary foods.

INTRODUCTION: Edible insects are consumed by over 3,000 ethnic groups, with 2,205 species documented as food in 128 countries, yet evidence on fungal contamination, mycotoxins and allergen-related risks remains limited. This study assessed these hazards in edible insects and insect-fortified complementary foods for infant and young child nutrition. METHODS: Fungal contamination in 11 edible-insect products, seven food ingredients, seven insect-enriched formulations and five commercial complementary flours was assessed by culture and internal transcribed spacer sequencing.
