Opioid utilization after orthopaedic trauma hospitalization among Medicaid-insured adults.

Opioids are vital to pain management and sedation after trauma-related hospitalization. However, there are many confounding clinical, social, and environmental factors that exacerbate pain, post-injury care needs, and receipt of opioid prescriptions following orthopaedic trauma. This retrospective study sought to characterize differences in opioid prescribing and dosing in a national Medicaid eligible sample from 2010-2018. The study population included adults, discharged after orthopaedic trauma hospitalization, and receiving an opioid prescription within 30 days of discharge. Patients were i

Surfactant administration methods for premature newborns: LISA vs. INSURE comparative analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) is the most common respiratory disorder among premature infants. The use of surfactant has significantly reduced respiratory complications and mortality. There are two conventional methods for administering surfactant: Intubate-Surfactant-Extubate (INSURE) and Less Invasive Surfactant Administration (LISA). This study aims to compare the effects of surfactant administration using these two methods on the treatment outcomes of premature newborns. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we included 100 premature newborns with

Health insurance's contribution to reducing the financial burden of tuberculosis in Guizhou Province, China.

Despite global efforts to end tuberculosis (TB), the goal of preventing catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) due to TB remains unmet. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Guizhou Province, Southwest China. Data were collected from the Hospital Information System and a survey of TB patients who had completed standardized antituberculosis treatment between January and March 2021. Among the 2 283 participants, the average total expenditure and out-of-pocket expenditure were $1 506.6 (median = $760.5) and $683.6 (median = $437.8), respectively. Health insurance reimbursement reduced CHE by…

METHODS: A randomized controlled crossover (AB/BA) trial of surfactant administration with LISA vs. INSURE in a preterm manikin. Forty-two tertiary hospital consultants and pediatric residents with previous experience with LISA and INSURE participated. The primary outcome measure was the time of device positioning. The secondary outcome measures were: success of the first attempt, number of attempts, correct de

Quality of Preventive and Chronic Illness Care for Insured Adults With Opioid Use Disorder.

IMPORTANCE: Nearly all initiatives to improve care for individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) have focused on improving OUD identification and treatment. Whether individuals with OUD have lower quality of care than individuals without OUD remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To measure quality of non-OUD preventive and chronic illness care and care coordination for individuals with OUD compared with individuals without OUD. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A cross-sectional study of deidentified data on outpatients throughout the US was conducted. Claims for 79 372 commercially insured and Medi

Racial Differences in Extremity Soft Tissue Sarcoma Treatment in a Universally Insured Population.

BACKGROUND: In prior reports from population-based databases, black patients with extremity soft tissue sarcoma (ESTS) have lower reported rates of limb-sparing surgery and adjuvant treatment. The objective of this study was to compare the multimodality treatment of ESTS between black and white patients within a universally insured and equal-access health care system. METHODS: Claims data from TRICARE, the US Department of Defense insurance plan that provides health care coverage for 9 million active-duty personnel, retirees, and dependents, were queried for patients younger than 65 y with ES…

Rate of preventative vaccine use and vaccine beliefs among a commercially insured population.

Immunization is an important component of preventive healthcare services. By recognizing and understanding factors associated with suboptimal vaccination compliance, healthcare providers can better approach at-risk populations and target efforts at reinforcing the vital importance of immunizations. The objective of this study was to understand the factors associated with adherence, beliefs and behaviors of influenza, pneumococcal, and herpes zoster vaccines receipt among commercially insured adults. A cross-sectional survey of patients with medical and pharmacy benefits for a 24-month period b
