Decoding past microbial life and antibiotic resistance in İnonü Cave's archaeological soil.

This study, which bridges the disciplines of archaeology and microbiology, examines the ancient bacterial communities and antibiotic-resistance genes in soil samples collected from İnönü Cave in Zonguldak, Turkiye. Our aim is to provide a comprehensive understanding of historical human activities and their influence on microbial communities. Soil samples were gathered from four distinct cultural levels from the Chalcolithic Age to the Early Iron Age. The microbial communities were characterized, and antibiotic-resistance genes were identified using high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes

Integrating PET for tumour hypoxia in radiotherapy planning: Insights from Portuguese radiotherapy and nuclear medicine technologists.

INTRODUCTION: In the era of personalised medicine, tumour hypoxia (TH) is critical in radiotherapy (RT) response due to its role in tumour resistance. Positron Emission Tomography (PET) enables non-invasive assessment of TH and supports heterogeneous dose-escalation to hypoxic sub-volumes, improving treatment efficacy. This study explores Nuclear Medicine Technologists (NMT) and Radiotherapy Technologists (RTT) perceptions of PET-based TH (PET-TH) assessment and implementation in RT planning in Portugal. METHODS: We conducted an observational cross-sectional survey of RTTs and NMTs currently

Enhancing mental health care: a problem, resources and goals oriented multidimensional framework (PRoGO).

BACKGROUND: Lawrence Weed introduced the "Problem-Oriented Medical Records" (POMR) approach to medicine. Its core principle is that treatment should be organised around patients' specific problems. This approach gained widespread adoption in the United States during the 1970s. However, few studies have compared POMR with the traditional "source-based" method, and evidence supporting its application in mental health remains particularly limited. METHODS: We carried out a narrative review to examine whether POMR is appropriate for mental health care and which modifications are necessary for thi

Machine Learning and Vision: Advancing the Frontiers of Diabetic Cataract Management.

This comprehensive review explores the integration of machine learning (ML) in managing diabetic cataracts. It discusses the potential application of ML to identify novel methodologies for early detection, diagnosis, and therapeutic interventions. The review also addresses clinical translation challenges, including pharmacokinetics properties and ethical considerations. The approach toward cataractogenesis, therefore, has to be from a holistic viewpoint, bringing oxidative stress and metabolic disturbances to the top of importance. It outlines the important requirements, including continued re

Intersectional characterization of emergency department (ED) staff experiences of racism: a survey of ED healthcare workers for the Disrupting Racism in Emergency Medicine (DRiEM) Investigators.

INTRODUCTION: The impact of racism on patient outcomes in Emergency Medicine has been examined but there have been few studies exploring the experiences of racism in health care workers. This survey aims to explore the experience of racism by interdisciplinary staff in a tertiary ED. By characterizing the staff experience of racism in the ED, we hope to inform the design of strategies to disrupt racism and ultimately improve the health and wellness of both staff and patients. METHODS: We conducted a self-administered, cross-sectional survey to explore the reported experience of racism by heal

Interdisciplinary approach to solve unusual mortalities in the European common frog (Rana temporaria) in two high-mountain ponds affected by climate change.

The global decline in amphibian populations is a major environmental issue. Chytridiomycosis, Ranaviruses and the red-leg syndrome have been identified in unusual mortality events. However, these infections do not account for all causes of declining amphibian populations. Moreover, several cases of amphibian mortality are difficult to solve without resorting to an interdisciplinary approach. Two cases of unusual mortality in Rana temporaria occurred at two high-mountain ponds (northwest Italy) in April and May 2021. Water and frog samples were analysed to understand the possible causes respons

The meaning of spiritual care in a pediatric setting.

In the previous issue of the Journal of Pediatric Nursing, one type of evidence-based practice (EBP) format was provided for potential nurse scholars who utilize the EBP process [MacPhee, M. (2002). Journal of Pediatric Nursing, 17(4);313-20]. There are, however, many potential formats to present evidence-based clinical practice innovations. I am eager to work with nurses who have been involved in promoting evidence-based nursing practice. The Journal of Pediatric Nursing will use this column as a forum for sharing evidence-based clinical practice innovations, such as case studies, clinical te

Keeping healthcare afloat: a protocol for a 5-year multi-sited interdisciplinary research project into preparedness of healthcare for floods in the Netherlands.

INTRODUCTION: The 2021 European floods in Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands significantly impacted healthcare. With climate change increasing flood risks, healthcare preparedness is essential. Floods affect healthcare directly and indirectly by disrupting patient access, damaging infrastructure and impeding care continuity. Our interdisciplinary research in the Netherlands systematically assesses flood impacts on healthcare, optimises disaster preparedness, patient logistics, and continuity and explores crisis governance, incorporating lessons from coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). Diabetic Ketoacidosis in a Patient With Type 2 Diabetes Following Ophthalmic Steroid Use: A Rare Etiology.

The systemic adverse effects of corticosteroids are well established. However, steroid-induced diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) has been rarely reported, and hyperglycemia resulting from topical ophthalmic corticosteroids remains insufficiently described, despite their widespread use and perceived safety. We report the case of a 70-year-old female patient with longstanding type 2 diabetes mellitus who presented with DKA following the postoperative use of topical steroid eyedrops. The condition resolved within 24 hours with appropriate management, including isotonic fluid resuscitation, intravenous

The sun-earth-health connection: a short review of potential mechanisms and implications.

Heliobiology explores the influence of solar and geomagnetic activity on human health. This short review synthesises evidence linking solar flares, coronal mass ejections, and geomagnetic storms to cardiovascular events, autonomic dysregulation, circadian disruption, and possible neurological effects. Proposed mechanisms include melatonin suppression, cryptochrome magnetoreception, and voltage-gated calcium-channel modulation. Recent studies further support associations between geomagnetic disturbances and endothelial activation, systemic inflammation, and elevated cardiovascular mortality. Th

[Management of Risk Factors and Comobordities in Atrial Fibrillation].

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained arrhythmia and has gained increasing importance due to demographic changes. The development of AF is multifactorial, including both non-modifiable risk factors such as age and genetic predisposition, as well as modifiable factors like obesity and alcohol consumption. Common comorbidities include arterial hypertension, heart failure, sleep apnea syndrome, and diabetes mellitus. Current studies show that treatment of these risk factors and comorbidities prevents the progression of AF and improves the results of rhythm control therapy. Prevent

Advances in non-invasive diagnostic tools for endometriosis: A narrative review of the past ten years.

Endometriosis is a chronic condition defined by endometrium-like tissue outside the uterus, with symptoms including pain, infertility, and fatigue. Despite the high prevalence of disease, diagnosis is frequently delayed, in part due to reliance on invasive procedures such as laparoscopy. Over the past decade, scientific research and international collaborations have focused on the development of non-invasive diagnostic tools to allow earlier detection and reduce the burden of surgical diagnosis. This narrative review summarizes key developments in non-invasive tools over the past decade. These
