OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinicopathologic features of small intestinal hemangioma and vascular malformation.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 51 cases of hemangioma and vascular malformation involving the duodenum, jejunum and ileum in the past 30 years.
RESULTS: The patient's age ranged from 1.4 to 75.0 years, with an average/median age of 40 years for the 51 cases. The ratio of male and female was almost equal. In most cases, the lesions were located in the ileum (18 cases) and jejunum (16 cases) accounting for 66.7%. The predominant symptoms and signs were either i

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Despite being the longest and containing a greater proportion of the gastrointestinal tract's mucosal surface area, the small bowel is where <2 % to 5 % of gastrointestinal cancers can occur. Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is the rarest risk factor for the development of small intestinal cancers. Here we report a case of perforated poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma of the jejunum for which Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is identified.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old male patient presented to the emergency department with generalized peritonitis caused by a perforated jejunal

BACKGROUND: Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) is an autosomal dominant condition giving rise to multiple adenomatous polyps in the colon which invariably become malignant by the fourth decade. Congenital hypertrophy of retinal pigment epithelium (CHRPE) is one of its extra intestinal manifestations early in childhood seen, present in 90% of FAP population and is easy to detect.
FINDINGS: Patients diagnosed with FAP and at risk first degree family members were screened for CHRPE using a slit lamp and indirect ophthalmoscopy. The retina of 17 diagnosed FAP patients and 13 individuals at risk

BACKGROUND: Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a rare disease characterized by the presence of hamartomatous polyposis throughout the gastrointestinal tract, except for the esophagus, along with characteristic mucocutaneous pigmentation. It is caused by germline pathogenic variants of the STK11 gene, which exhibit an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance. Some patients with PJS develop gastrointestinal lesions in childhood and require continuous medical care until adulthood and sometimes have serious complications that significantly reduce their quality of life. Hamartomatous polyps in the small

We report a case of intermediate lymphocytic lymphoma (ILL) with multiple lymphomatous polyposis. A 56-year-old man presented with general fatigue and bloody stool. Physical examination showed cervical and axillary lymphadenopathy, bilateral tonsillar hypertrophy, and moderate splenomegaly. Leukocyte count was 9,570/microliters with 11% abnormal cells, infiltration of which was observed in the bone marrow too. Examinations of the gastrointestinal tract revealed diffuse small polypoid lesions throughout the stomach and the entire large bowel. The biopsied specimens from both the stomach and lar

HISTORY AND FINDINGS: A 56-year-old man was admitted to hospital because of chronic diarrhoea. 15 months earlier he had begun to notice changes in taste sensation, then nail discoloration and dystrophy as well as alopecia areata. On examination he was also found to have lower leg oedema and cutaneous hyperpigmentation.
INVESTIGATIONS: Biochemical tests showed hypoproteinaemia with reduced serum total protein (4.2 g/dl) and albumin concentrations (2.0 g/dl), hypokalemia and hypocalcaemia, as well as zinc and vitamin B12 deficiency. Stool alpha 1-antitrypsin was raised to 5.9 mg/g. Erythrocyte

Fourteen polps with the gross appearance of small hyperplastic (metaplastic) polyps, not exceeding five mm in diameter, were removed from the rectum and the sigmoid colon of patients during colonscopy, and from surgical specimens. At light microscopy they were seen to be composed of apparently normal mucosa. In most cases some hyperplastic (metaplastic) and adenomatous polyps were also present. HID-AB stain revealed the polyps to be composed of "transitional" mucosa containing almost exclusively sialomucins, in contrast to normal mucosa, in which sulphomucins predominate. It is suggested that

This report describes the clinical and pathologic features of eight cases of an unusual inflammatory polyp arising from the transitional zone of the anus. This lesion has been designated as the inflammatory cloacogenic polyp. Rectal bleeding is the most common presenting clinical symptom. The polyp is usually located on the anterior wall of the anal canal. Morphologically, it is characterized by a tubulovillous pattern of growth, superficial ulceration, displaced groups of crypts into submucosa, and extension of chronically inflamed fibromuscular stroma into the lamina propria. Clinical and mo

Multiple lymphomatous polyposis (MLP) is a distinctive and particularly rare clinical type of malignant gastrointestinal lymphoma, which is classified as B-cell centrocytic non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. this rare entity has been recently reclassified as mantle cell lymphoma. We herein report three additional cases of MLP involving various segments of the gastrointestinal tract. MLP has an aggressive biologic behavior and a relatively poor prognosis and must be treated accordingly as a high-grade lymphoma with systemic chemotherapy.

In an endoscopic population screening study for colorectal polyps among 200 men and 200 women, 50-59 years of age, 215 polyps less than 5 mm in diameter were left in situ for the present 2-year follow-up examination. The attendance rate was 102 of 106 (96%) for polyp patients and 77 of 90 (86%) in the control group. Of 194 polyps, 143 (74%) in the 102 polyp-bearing individuals were recovered for histological evaluation and 57 polyps were registered as new. Ninety-nine (50%) of the polyps were hyperplastic, 45 (23%) were adenomas, and 45 (23%) were mucosal tags. Both growth and regression of po

Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is an autosomal dominant hereditary disease characterized by the early onset of numerous intestinal polyps, which, if untreated, may progress to colon cancer. Traditional treatments have primarily relied on surgical resection; however, with advancements in molecular biology and pharmacology, chemoprevention has increasingly become an important adjunct in the treatment of FAP. This review systematically summarizes the molecular pathological mechanisms of FAP and recent advances in chemopreventive strategies, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NS…

A female patient in her 20s presented to a routine ophthalmology appointment. Medical history was unremarkable. Family history was notable for intestinal cancer of a second-degree relative, diagnosed in her late 60s. Fundus examination revealed bilateral, multiple, flat, oval, pigmented lesions with an irregular halo of atrophy. The patient was diagnosed with atypical congenital hypertrophy of retinal pigmented epithelium. Investigation of extraocular associations was performed, including upper and lower endoscopy, which revealed 500-1000 colonic polyps with a maximum size 25 mm. Pathology did

Gardner's syndrome is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by the presence of colonic polyposis, osteomas, and a multitude of soft-tissue tumors. Dental anomalies are present in estimated 30% of all affected individuals of Gardner's syndrome, so dental professionals play an important role in determining the early signs of the syndrome. The intestinal polyps have a 100% risk of undergoing malignant transformation if not treated thus, early diagnosis and regular surveillance are important. In this report, we describe classical presentation of Gardner's syndrome in a patient who presented …

Gastrointestinal complications following HSCT are numerous and include a variety of issues resulting in hepatic, biliary, pancreatic, and intestinal compromise. In the context of an underlying state of immune dysregulation, novel complications may arise including autoimmunity. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a patient with XLP who was successfully treated with HSCT using an HLA-matched unrelated cord blood unit that was complicated by the development of inflammatory polyps of the colon. Given the underlying diagnosis of XLP and its associated immune dysregulation, the challenge o

Colon cancer is not an entity that pediatricians routinely confront; however, a family history of colon cancer can have pediatric implications when it is part of familial adenomatous polyposis syndrome. Colonic (multiple intestinal polyps) and extracolonic manifestations (such as hepatoblastoma or brain tumors) can be the presenting features in children. The authors present 2 patients from different families with familial adenomatous polyposis who presented with the extracolonic manifestation of this syndrome and a family history of colon cancer. Identification of these families and education …

Gardner syndrome (GS) is an abnormality of familial adenomatous polyposis accompanied by characteristic jaw lesions. Gardner syndrome intestinal polyps have a 100% risk of undergoing malignant transformation; consequently, early identification and surgical intervention of the disease are important to prolong the life of the patient. We present a case of GS in a 55-year-old woman. Familial adenomatous polyposis, osteomatous jaw and ocular lesions, several dental abnormalities, and an abdominal desmoid tumor are the characteristic features of this case. This case demonstrates the presence of unu…
