In an attempt to estimate the in vivo acetylcholine level in rat iris-ciliary body, animals were sacrificed by microwave irradiation which rapidly inactivates metabolic enzymes. Acetylcholine levels in the iris-ciliary body were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection. In the present study we took the fluorescein iris and angle photography of normal eyes and studied them according to different age groups. The range of age in 108 eyes of 92 subjects was from 20 to 93 years. They were free from any systemic diseases or ophthalmic diseases which would cause iris rubeosis. The prejunctional effects of cholinergic agents on release of norepinephrine from sympathetic nerve endings were investigated in the isolated, superfused rabbit iris-ciliary body. The iris and choroid membrane of the adult rat contain nerve fibers expressing immunoreactivity to the neuropeptide galanin. The density and distribution of galanin-positive nerve fibers varied from iris to iris and, particularly, among animals. Specimens of a cornea, conjunctiva and iris were removed at the time of penetrating keratoplasty in a case of nephropathic cystinosis. Immunohistochemical studies revealed the presence of class II antigens on the stromal keratocytes of the cornea and the vascular endothelial cells, pericytes and fibroblasts of the conjunctiva. In addition, there were thinning and focal breaks in Bowman's membrane. Both of these findings may have contributed to the severe photophobia and blepharospasm seen in patients with longstanding cystinosis.

Transmission electron microscopy studies of cornea, iris and lens from a case of ocular siderosis due to a retained intraocular foreign body (IOFB) and vitreous hemorrhage are presented. Cathepsin B in the bovine ciliary body and iris was studied biochemically using alpha-N-benzoyl-D,L-arginine-2-naphthylamide as substrate. The enzyme was purified to 210-fold from the autolyzed extract. The partially purified enzyme had a pH optimum at 6.0 and a molecular weight of 27,000. The apparent Km value for the substrate was 1.6 mM. The enzyme was activated by disodium ethylenediamine tetraacetate, cysteine, and dithiothreitol. The enzyme activity was inhibited strongly by leupeptin and partially by hyaluronate and chondroitin sulfate A.

Three cases of peripapillary choroidal filling defects demonstrated by fluorescein angiography are presented. In two cases the defect was interpreted as an occlusion of a posterior ciliary artery. There are unusually thick serpentine vessels in the iris along which there are no leaks in the fluorescein angiogram. Five and a half to seven years ago this was considered to be a sign of normal iris vessels in our department. It was assumed that this was only an abnormality. In four instances we have been able to find this irregularity, without any changes, in the vessels in the iris where it was a question of shunt vessels. In three of these four instances other diseases of the eyes were also present.
