Purple urine in Berdon syndrome: a rare finding in the clinic laboratory.

INTRODUCTION: Purple Urine Bag Syndrome (PUBS) is a rare disorder seen in elderly persons, wherein the urinary bag and the tubing turn in to purple colour. It is usually seen in patients who are on urinary catheters for a long time. It consists of a change in the colour of the urine that turns purple in a very specific context. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a paediatric female patient with Berdon Syndrome with symptoms consistent with urinary tract infection and purple urine discolouration. Urine test revealed leukocyturia and bacteriuria. DISCUSSION: Several risk factors have been prop

Anaemia in South American camelids - an overview of clinical and laboratory diagnostics.

South American camelids (SACs) play an increasing role in veterinary care in Europe. Many alpacas or llamas presented to veterinarians suffer from anaemia, regularly with a packed cell volume (PCV) below 0.10 l/l, which is a life-threatening condition for the animals. This review article presents clinical and laboratory diagnostic tools for the diagnosis of anaemia in SACs. Clinical identification of anaemic animals can be performed by assessing the FAMACHA© score and the Body Condition Score (BCS), since anaemia in alpacas and llamas correlates with pale mucous membranes and a lowered BCS. Vitamin D deficiency in athletes: Laboratory, clinical and field integration.

Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent in athletes. Increased utilisation and storage depletion may be key contributing factor. We found a higher prevalence of vitamin D inadequacy (deficiency/ insufficiency) in power than endurance sport athletes, which may be related to vitamin D utilisation and reserve in skeletal muscles.

Trichosporon inkin fungemia case report: clinical and laboratory management.

Trichosporon species are emerging as opportunistic pathogens that mainly affect immunocompromised patients. Patients with onco-hematological diseases usually present with fungemia by Trichosporon species, especially by T. asahii. Reports of this infection by other species of the genus are uncommon. Thus, in this paper, we present a case of T. inkin fungemia in a 39-year-old female patient with intestinal obstruction and absence of malignant hematological diseases. The late mycological diagnosis, the ineffective control of her pre-existing conditions and consequent failure to start antifungal t

The clinical and laboratory evaluation of patients with suspected hypocellular marrow failure.

The overlap in clinical presentation and bone marrow features of acquired and inherited causes of hypocellular marrow failure poses a significant diagnostic challenge in real case scenarios, particularly in nonsevere disease. The distinction between acquired aplastic anemia (aAA), hypocellular myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), and inherited bone marrow failure syndromes presenting with marrow hypocellularity is critical to inform appropriate care. Here, we review the workup of hypocellular marrow failure in adolescents through adults. Given the limitations of relying on clinical stigmata or fami
