Language evolution resulted from changes in our biology, behavior, and culture. One source of these changes might be human self-domestication. Williams syndrome (WS) is a clinical condition with a clearly defined genetic basis which results in a distinctive behavioral and cognitive profile, including enhanced sociability. In this paper we show evidence that the WS phenotype can be satisfactorily construed as a hyper-domesticated human phenotype, plausibly resulting from the effect of the WS hemideletion on selected candidates for domestication and neural crest (NC) function. Specifically, we s…

BACKGROUND: Aphasia is an acquired language impairment following brain damage that affects some or all language modalities: expression and understanding of speech, reading, and writing. Approximately one third of people who have a stroke experience aphasia.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of speech and language therapy (SLT) for aphasia following stroke.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Stroke Group Trials Register (last searched 9 September 2015), CENTRAL (2015, Issue 5) and other Cochrane Library Databases (CDSR, DARE, HTA, to 22 September 2015), MEDLINE (1946 to September 2015),…

It has been suggested that the activation of speech-motor areas during speech comprehension may, in part, reflect the involvement of the speech production system in synthesizing upcoming material at an articulatorily specified level. In this study, we explored that suggestion through the use of articulatory imaging. We investigated whether, and how, predictions that emerge during speech comprehension influence articulatory realizations during picture naming. We elicited predictions by auditorily presenting high-cloze sentence stems to participants (e.g., When we want water we just turn on the

De Oliveira-Souza, Moll, and Tovar-Moll (this issue) historically reevaluate that Paul Broca's aphemia should be considered as a kind of apr … al convolutions are not motor organs. I finally contend that, in order to determine whether a given language problem should be labeled as aphasia or apraxia, it is crucial to first be clear on the components of old and new models of language production.

BACKGROUND: Limited data are available evaluating language outcomes of preterm infants in early childhood. Furthermore, the relationship between language outcomes, medical morbidities and developmental trajectory in early infancy is unclear.
AIMS: The goal of this study was to evaluate language outcomes among extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants at 30months adjusted age (AA).
STUDY DESIGN: The Bayley Scales of Infant Development II and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test or Expressive One Word Picture Vocabulary Test/Receptive One Word Picture Vocabulary Test were administered at 30mont…

BACKGROUND: The term 'specific language impairment' (SLI), in use since the 1980s, describes children with language impairment whose cognitive skills are within normal limits where there is no identifiable reason for the language impairment. SLI is determined by applying exclusionary criteria, so that it is defined by what it is not rather than by what it is. The recent decision to not include SLI in DSM-5 provoked much debate and concern from researchers and clinicians.
AIMS: To explore how the term 'specific language impairment' emerged, to consider how disorders, including SLI, are general…

We studied behavior in a group of children with specific language impairment in its 2 subtypes (expressive and mixed receptive/expressive). After exclusion of other psychiatric conditions, we evaluated 114 children of ages 2 to 7 years using language developmental tests and behavioral screening scales. Behavior problems appeared in 54% of the children. Withdrawn was the most frequently found syndrome in preschool children, whereas anxious/depressed and social problems were the most frequent in older children. The high frequency of behavioral syndromes in children with specific language impairm…

BACKGROUND: Clinic and community-based epidemiological studies have shown an association between child psychopathology and language impairment. The demands on language for social and academic adjustment shift dramatically during adolescence and the ability to understand the nonliteral meaning in language represented by higher order language becomes essential.
OBJECTIVES: : This article reports on the association between difficulties in higher order language skills, reading, cognition, and social-emotional adjustment in adolescents.
METHOD: : 144 clinic-referred and 186 comparison youth aged …

Whether motor and linguistic representations of actions share common neural structures has recently been the focus of an animated debate in cognitive neuroscience. Group studies with brain-damaged patients reported association patterns of praxic and linguistic deficits whereas single case studies documented double dissociations between the correct execution of gestures and their comprehension in verbal contexts. When the relationship between language and imitation was investigated, each ability was analysed as a unique process without distinguishing between possible subprocesses. However, rece…

Children have the right to express their views and influence decisions in matters that affect them. Yet decisions regarding speech-language pathology are often made on their behalf, and research into the perspectives of children who receive speech-language pathology intervention is currently limited. This paper reports a qualitative study which explored experiences of communication and of speech-language pathology from the perspectives of children with speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN). The aim was to explore their perspectives of communication, communication impairment, and ass…

Angelman syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by pervasive developmental disability with failure to develop speech. We examined the basis for severe language delay in patients with Angelman syndrome by diffusion tensor imaging. Magnetic resonance imaging/diffusion tensor imaging was performed in 7 children with genetically confirmed Angelman syndrome (age 70 ± 26 months, 5 boys) and 4 age-matched control children to investigate the microstructural integrity of arcuate fasciculus and other major association tracts. Six of 7 children with Angelman syndrome had unidentifiable left arcuate…

Language, speech, cognitive-associated communication deficits, and dysphagia are common following acquired brain injury (stroke, traumatic brain injury, and others). Treatment of these disorders can be divided into restorative, compensatory, and supportive approaches. Although therapy must be individualized for each person, components of all three approaches are necessary to maximize an individual's recovery. This article provides a general overview of traditional as well as state-of-the-art treatment for aphasia, cognitive-linguistic impairments, dysarthria, apraxia, and dysphagia.

Person-centered care (PCC) has become the foundation for practice in many areas of health care provision. Research has suggested that providing PCC may improve therapy outcomes, client satisfaction, and perceived quality of care, as well as address aspects of evidence-based practice. As members of the health care provider community, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) will be expected to provide PCC as part of their therapeutic interactions. Some research, however, has indicated that SLPs have a tendency to provide more structured, task-oriented therapies. In this article, a working definition…

The pervasiveness of word-finding difficulties in aphasia has motivated several theories regarding management of the deficit and its effectiveness. Recently, the hypothesis was advanced that instead of simply accompanying speech gestures participate in language production by increasing the semantic activation of words grounded in sensory-motor features, hence facilitating retrieval of the word form. Based on this assumption, several studies have developed rehabilitation therapies in which the use of gestures reinforces word recovery. Until now, however, no studies have investigated the benefic…

PURPOSE: Several small patient studies and case reports raise concerns that the reliability of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) may be impaired in the vicinity of cerebral lesions. This could affect the clinical validity of fMRI for presurgical language lateralization. The current study sets out to identify if a systematic effect of lesion type and localization on fMRI exists.
METHODS: We classify lesions typically occurring in epilepsy patients according to (1) their potential to disturb blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD)-effect generation or detection or to disturb spatial…

Early semantic effects (<200 ms) for single word processing have been reported inconsistently, though not rarely, in the ERP literature. It may be hypothesized that the frequently reported later lexical effects are related to the lengthy processing of long/scarcely familiar words or task factors. In this paper, we have investigated the timing of brain activation during processing of native vs. later-acquired languages in simultaneous interpreters. The data show a clear-cut difference between native and foreign languages (proficiency being equal) in a silent letter detection task not requiring …
