The capacity of human leucocytes from normal donors to kill the newborn larvae of the nematode Trichinella spiralis in vitro, in the presence of serum from infected individuals, was studied using newborn larvae (NBL) less than 2 h of age or NBL that had been maintained in culture at 37 degrees C for 20 h. Neutrophils and monocytes attached to newborn Trichinella larvae and killed them, regardless of their age. When eosinophils were used, 20 h old NBL were killed whereas 2 h old NBL were not. Complement was essential in the cytotoxic effect of leucocytes. These results indicate that host defenc…

The effect of irradiation on the third stage larvae of the filarial nematode Brugia pahangi was investigated. Labelling with 35S methionine of control or irradiated L3, post-infective L3 or L4 revealed no consistent alterations in the pattern of proteins synthesized. The only significant difference observed was in 125I labelling, where the specific activity of labelling of soluble cuticular proteins was lower in irradiated than in control parasites. This difference may be related to the reduced size of irradiated parasites rather than to a specific effect of irradiation on the expression of cu…

BACKGROUND: Cordylobia anthropophaga (Blanchard) is a nonhematophagous dipteron belonging to the Calliphoridae family. It produces a myiasis called "tumbu fly" or "ver de Cayor" or "mango fly" or "skin maggot fly".
CASE REPORTS: We describe two women, 24 and 23 years of age, affected by cutaneous myiasis caused by the larva of Cordylobia anthropophaga. In both cases the myiasis was contracted in Senegal and was characterized by a single lesion localized to the flank and the thigh respectively. From each of these lesions a single larva was extracted.
DISCUSSION: This myiasis represents a typi…

The distribution of the larvae of Ancylostoma caninum in tissues of captive wild rodents (Rattus rattus) and the leucocytic and behavioural responses of these rodents were studied after experimental oral infection. There was a wide distribution of larvae in tissues with a preponderance of the larvae in the skeletal muscles of the anterior part of the body in older infection. The rats responded by an elevation of total leucocytes and eosinophils in blood, alternation of locomotory activity and behavioural dominance that may have a correlation with predation and epidemiology of A. caninum in a s…

Natural vectors of onchocerciasis (S. yahense) were collected. Ninety-eight were intrathoracically inoculated with 30 freshly obtained skin-dwelling microfilariae. Of the 82 flies dissected, 56 were infected and 28 harbored infective larvae. A total of 193 infective O. volvulus larvae were obtained. The mean infective worm burden was 6.9.

The effects of thiabendazole on the survival and migration of Toxocara canis larvae in mice were studied. Although thiabendazole had a negligible larvicidal effect, it produced marked inhibition of the migration of the larvae in tissues. Larvae were arrested in the liver after oral inoculation and in the lungs after intravenous inoculation. Observations indicated that the drug may have a reversible, as well as a progressive, time-related metabolic effect on the larvae. Significant inhibition of migration required administration of the drug in medicated feed at a concentration of 0.25% or more.…
