Intraocular IgE antibody induced in guinea pigs with Ascaris suum larvae.

The systemic and local (intraocular) IgE antibody responses to infective and heat-killed Ascaris suum larvae were examined in guinea pigs. IgE antibody, demonstrated by the 6-day P-K test, was found in anterior chamber fluid following primary intravitreal injection of live second-stage A. suum larvae and in some instances occurred when no serum P-K activity was demonstrable. No intraocular IgE antibody was induced by primary intravitreal injection of heat-killed larvae. A brisk intraocular and systemic IgE antibody response followed the secondary intravitreal injection of either live or heat-k

Visceral pentastomiasis caused by Armillifer armillatus in a captive striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena) in Chiang Mai Night Safari, Thailand.

Visceral pentastomiasis (porocephalosis) caused by Armillifer armillatus larvae was incidentally diagnosed in a female striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena) of unknown age which died unexpectedly in 2013. The hyena had been imported from Tanzania 8years earlier and have been since then in a zoo in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand. Pathological examination revealed visceral nymph migrans of pentastomes throughout the intestine, liver, diaphragm, omentum and mesentery, spleen, kidneys, and urinary bladder. Polymerase chain reaction and sequencing that targeted the pentastomid-specific 18S rRNA gene determi

Organ-specific Toxocara canis larvae migration and host immune response in experimentally infected mice.

We investigated organ specific Toxocara canis larval migration in mice infected with T. canis larvae. We observed the worm burden and systemic immune responses. Three groups of BALB/c mice (n=5 each) were orally administered 1,000 T. canis 2nd stage larvae to induce larva migrans. Mice were sacrificed at 1, 3, and 5 weeks post-infection. Liver, lung, brain, and eye tissues were collected. Tissue from 2 mice per group was digested for larval count, while the remaining 3 mice underwent histological analysis. Blood hematology and serology were evaluated and compared to that in a control uninfecte

The extraparasitic life cycle of Toxocara vitulorum in the village environment of Sri Lanka.

The extraparasitic life cycle of Toxocara vitulorum of buffalo in the villages of Sri Lanka is related to observations on buffalo behaviour, experimental studies on the development and persistence of the eggs in soil and in wallows and the presence of eggs in village locations. Calf faeces on soil were rapidly incorporated by insect activity and the eggs developed only slightly slower than in the laboratory. Some infective eggs persisted 3-4 cm deep for 17 months, finally dying during a prolonged hot, dry period. Eggs in a wallow developed intermittently over 16 months as it was flushed with r

Imaging of toxocariasis.

Several imaging modalities have now been employed to visualize the manifestations of larval Toxocara infection in hepatic, neurologic, ocular, renal, and other anatomical sites. This report reviews the usefulness and value of these individual imaging methods in diagnosis and follow-up of the different cases causing eosinophilic (granulomatous) infiltrations the liver, lungs, brain, heart, and eyes. Imaging provides a means of assisting in diagnosis and management in this infection where diagnosis by biopsy is often unlikely to capture an actual larva for the purpose of making a definitive diag

An itchy holiday.

A 33-year-old Dutch woman developed itchy skin lesions during a beach holiday in Thailand. She was treated for various diagnoses, without success. Finally she was successfully treated for a clinically suspected hookwormrelated folliculitis. A brief overview of hookworm-related folliculitis is given.

Acute eosinophilic pneumonia due to toxocariasis with bronchoalveolar lavage findings.

A previously healthy young man presented with breathlessness, diffuse pulmonary infiltrates on the chest x-ray film, and a high degree of peripheral blood eosinophilia. Analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid showed 64 percent eosinophils. A diagnosis of toxocariasis was eventually reached on the basis of a positive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for Toxocara canis. The routine performance of the ELISA test for Toxocara in the diagnostic approach to pulmonary infiltration with eosinophilia could reveal an undetermined, sometimes unsuspected, number of cases of adult toxocaria

[Multiple pulmonary opacities revealing toxocariasis].

INTRODUCTION: Toxocariasis is a parasitosis which complicates the accidental infestation of the humans by larvae of a roundworms belonging of the genus Toxocara. In adults, the discovery is often incidental during a hypereosinophilia check-up. Clinical signs are not specific and depend on affected organs. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 53-year-old-woman who has consulted for a recent cough, after spontaneous resolution of abdominal pain. The laboratory examination isolated an hypereosinophilia and the liver sonography showed two hypoechogenic nodules. The CT-scan found bilateral lung no

Ectoparasites--the underestimated realm.

CONTEXT: Ectoparasitoses (infestations with parasites that live on or in the skin) can cause considerable morbidity. Whereas pediculosis and scabies are ubiquitous, cutaneous larva migrans and tungiasis (sand-flea disease) occur mainly in hot climates. The prevalence of ectoparasitoses in the general population is usually low, but can be high in vulnerable groups. Scientific knowledge on how to deal best with parasitic skin diseases in different settings is scanty, and evidence-based measures for control are not available. For head lice and scabies the situation is daunting, because resistance

[A case of Paragonimiasis westermanii complicated with migrating subcutaneous induration and multiple involvements in the liver].

A 33-year-old female was admitted to a hospital with chief complaints of abdominal pain, fever, cough and migrating subcutaneous induration. She had consumed half-cooked crabs 3 months ago. On admission, a mass in the abdominal wall, pleural effusion, a nodular shadow in the right upper lung on the chest X-ray and multiple low density areas in the liver on CT. Peripheral blood examination disclosed marked eosinophilia (5,300/mm3). Although we failed to detect any parasite eggs in stool, sputum and bronchogenic secretion, the immuno-serological test for parasites revealed an infection of parago

External ophthalmomyiasis caused by Estrus ovis.

External ophthalmomyiasis occurred in a 16-year-old white girl who was infected on Catalina Island, an endemic area for the sheep bot fly. With the patient under topical anesthesia, we isolated the larva, Estrus ovis, removed it with jewelers' forceps, and examined it with light and scanning electron microscopy. The patient responded well to a treatment regimen of corticosteroids and antibiotics.

Erythema chronicum migrans and lyme arthritis: field study of ticks.

Ticks were collected during 1977 in communities east of the Connecticut River where there was a high incidence of erythema chronicum migrans and Lyme arthritis and were compared with collections from a similar area 20 km west of the river where cases of the disease were rare. Ixodes scapularis was much more abundant on the east side than on the west. Immature I. scapularis were 13 times more abundant on white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus), and adult I. scapularis 16 times more abundant on white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in the east than in the west communities. In addition, all

Climate change and the displaced person: how vectors and climate are changing the landscape of infectious diseases among displaced and migrant populations.

BACKGROUND: As the climate crisis grows, so does the global burden of displacement. Displacement, whether a direct or indirect consequence of natural disaster, can lead to dire health sequelae. Skin health is no exception to this, with dermatologic disease being a leading concern reported by those who care for displaced persons. Health professionals who provide dermatologic care for displaced persons benefit from understanding how climate change impacts the global profile of infectious agents. METHODS: This review was performed using PubMed and Google Scholar. Search terms included climate ch
