Renal lesions in lymphoid malignancies are rare, with most lesions observed in association with Hodgkin's disease. In two large series of patients with Hodgkin's disease, only 0.4 percent had minimal-change lesion whereas 0.1 percent had amyloidosis. The non-Hodgkin's lymphomas and leukemias comprise large and heterogeneous groups with equally diverse renal lesions. As in Hodgkin's disease, the most frequent lesion is minimal-change nephrotic syndrome. A 6 1/2 years old boy got completely blind within 3 days. Ophthalmoscopically regular findings suggested a retrobulbar opticus infiltration in a pediatric-diagnosed acute myeloic leukemia FAB-M2. A retrospective follow-up mortality study of white male employees of an oil refinery located in southern illinois revealed a statistically significant excess number of deaths due to leukemia compared with the experience of U.S. white males (standardized mortality ratio [SMR] = 213; 95% confidence interval [Cl], 117 to 358). During the last years the treatment of acute leukemia became more successful thanks to aggressive chemotherapeutic regimen. There are nowadays about 70% long term survivors in the literature. On the other hand, complications and infection rate following such an aggressive treatment increased. Two children with legionellosis complicating a relapse of acute lymphoblastic leukemia are reported. A 5-year-old boy with pneumonia had Legionella pneumophila cultured from a tracheal aspirate following a rapid deterioration in his respiratory status and intubation. This child had severe and irreversible granulocytopenia and died in spite of therapy with erythromycin and rifampin added five days later. Blood volume was measured using 125iodinated human serum albumin in 27 children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and in 7 children with various types of leukemia. Total blood volume was normal in patients without marked enlargement of spleen and liver, and increased progressively as spleen and liver size increased. Scintigraphy with 99mTc-pertechnetate made it possible to detect focal brain lesions in 4 patients with primary malignant lymphomas of the brain, one patient with CNS involvement with lymphatic immunoblastoma, one patient with Sézary syndrome (mycosis fungoides and T cell leukemia) and one child with a space occupying infiltration of myeloblastic leukemia. The scintigraphic results were verified by morphological data from biopsy or autopsy.

Monoclonal membrane-bound Ig were found by immunofluorescence on the lymphocytes in the vast majority of cases of chronic lymphocytic leukemia. In 11 cases of leukaemia or other lymphatic system disease meningeal affection occurred together with an oedema of optic papilla. In 6 patients (9 eyes) visual accuity fell down till 0.1 or worse. By irradiation of retrobulbar spaces in 4 of 5 cases a marked visual accuity improvement was obtained. In 2 other patients an infiltration of optic nerve was found only post mortem through histological examination. In those patients visual accuity was not diminished.

Of 283 cases of lymphocytic disease, 81% fell within three distinct categories: lymphocytic and lymphoblastic lymphosarcoma and lymphocytic leukemia. The remaining 19% showed transitions from more mature to less mature cell types or from local to general anatomic distribution.
