A normative sample of 100 patients (59 women and 41 men) from the city of Rochester, Minnesota, and the surrounding rural area who came to the Mayo Clinic for a general medical examination were interviewed in a semistructured format by using a list of questions about childhood life events. Sexual abuse was reported by 16.9% of women and 0% of men, frequencies that are near the lower end of the spectrum of reported values from recent studies. Among 48 men with genital pain and no organic findings, psychological disorders were diagnosed frequently, including somatization disorder in 56%, nongenital chronic pain syndromes in 50%, major depression in 27%, and chemical dependency in 27%. This study compared the etiologically significant stressors listed on DSM-III axis IV (severity of psychosocial stressors) with life events elicited by the Psychiatric Epidemiology Research Interview (PERI). We carried out a case-controlled study of multiple psychological and social factors in 49 men with complicated or uncomplicated peptic ulcer disease. Thirty-two men with renal stones or gallstones and 20 healthy men served as controls. Ulcer patients and controls experienced a similar number of potentially stressful life events. Thirty-four children, aged 1 to 3.5 years, with a reactive depressive state were examined. Using the ontogenetic approach, the authors analyze affective as well as somatovegetative, psychomotor and behavioural disorders in the structure of the abnormal state. The relationship between early childhood events and DSM III personality disorders was examined in 82 non-psychotic psychiatric outpatients. The relationship of characteristics of the social environment to the adaptation of adolescents from high-risk predisposing environments was examined. The relationship was examined between symptoms rated in a sample of out-patient depressives, and measures of life stress derived from a separate interview. There was an association between symptoms reflecting the endogenous-neurotic distinction and life stress. However, the association was relatively weak, and was mainly with total social problems at the time of presentation, rather than with life events at onset. These findings are consistent with other studies which indicate that the absence of prior life events and the presence of the endogenous symptom pattern are only weakly related.

Examined the role of possible antecedents of psychological symptoms among 310 recently separated men and women. BACKGROUND: Early adverse life events (EALs) are associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Exposure to EALs as assessed by the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) questionnaire is associated with greater disease prevalence, but ACE has not been studied in gastrointestinal disorders. Study aims were to: (i) Estimate the prevalence of EALs in the IBS patients using the ACE questionnaire; (ii) Determine correlations between ACE and Early Trauma Inventory Self Report-Short Form (ETI-SR) scores to confirm its validity in IBS; and (iii) Correlate ACE scores with IBS symptom severity.
