Maxillary sinus pneumatization may significantly reduce the alveolar bone height. As a result, the sinus membrane may need to be apically repositioned, with or without grafts, before or at the time of implant placement. The sinus lift, however, is a relatively invasive surgical procedure that can lead to complications and sometimes unsuccessful results. This clinical report presents an orthodontic movement to enlarge the amount of bone at the sinus region for implant placement. The approach avoided surgery in a patient who used tobacco and exhibited recurrent sinusitis.

A 54-year-old woman presented with an 8-month history of dysesthesia to the left palate with referred pain to the left infraorbital distribution after extraction of the left maxillary first and second premolars. The clinical and radiologic examination revealed an alveolar crestal bone dehiscence suggestive of an occult oral antral communication (OAC) that had spontaneously healed. Anatomic sequelae of the upper back that occur with age or weight loss have been somewhat underserved in the plastic surgery literature. Zones of adherence in the upper posterior trunk create overhanging folds of skin and subcutaneous tissue, which are disturbing to the patient both functionally and cosmetically. BACKGROUND: The epidemic of obesity in the United States has led to a rapid increase in the number of bariatric procedures performed over the past several years. The dramatic changes to the torso following massive weight loss are only partially addressed by routine procedures such as abdominoplasty and liposuction. Circumferential body lifts or simultaneous abdominoplasty, thigh, and buttock lifts are becoming the method of choice for treating the postbariatric condition. In this article, the authors review the senior author's experience of 200 body lifts with massive weight loss individuals.
