Sn-protoporphyrin plus photoirradiation induces lipid peroxidation in vivo and in vitro in nonjaundiced Gunn rats.

Lipid peroxidation induced by Sn-protoporphyrin (SnPP) plus photoirradiation was investigated in vivo and in vitro using nonjaundiced Gunn rats. Membrane lipids from young adult rat brain were peroxidized by SnPP plus photoirradiation depending on the SnPP concentration and photoirradiance. Similarly, coadministration of SnPP and photoirradiation to suckling rats increased lipid peroxides in the whole blood and was found lethal. The influence of the wavelength distribution of light sources was also examined by using blue-white and green fluorescent lights. The photodynamic effect by green ligh…

[Study of lipid peroxidation in patients with tuberculosis of the female genital organs during subcutaneous tuberculin test].

The level of MDA in erythrocytes and plasma was determined in 71 female patients with a chronic inflammatory process in the genitals before and after subcutaneous tuberculin administration. In patients with active genital tuberculosis the MDA level rose significantly: in erythrocytes 24 hours and in plasma 72 hours after subcutaneous tuberculin administration. The MDA level remained unchanged in the rest of the patients.

[The effect of intensified lipid peroxidation in patients with Devergie's lichen ruber pilaris on adenylate cyclase activity].

Studies with the use of Fe2(+)-induced chemiluminescence of apo-beta-lipoproteins and electron histochemistry have revealed that PUVA therapy and vitamin A high doses enhance lipid peroxidation and activate adenylate cyclase in patients with Devergie's disease. This finding permits a conclusion on the usefulness of enhancing lipid peroxidation in order to reduce cellular mitotic activity.

[Lipid peroxidation and the phospholipid composition of the liver plasma membranes in rabbits in traumatic shock and their pharmacological correction].

Changes in peroxidation of hepatic tissue lipids were studied in experiments on rabbits with Cannon's traumatic shock according to products reacting with thiobarbituric acid. The lipid composition of hepatocyte plasma membranes was studied by thin-layer chromatography. The levels of lipid peroxidation products and the ratio of phospholipid fractions changed depending on the stage of the process. Administration of superoxide dismutase in the initial periods of shock reduced the raised level of products reacting with thiobarbituric acid and maintained the ratio of phospholipid fractions in the h

Silybin dihemisuccinate protects against glutathione depletion and lipid peroxidation induced by acetaminophen on rat liver.

Acetaminophen hepatotoxicity is characterized by glutathione depletion, cellular necrosis, and, in some instances, by the induction of lipid peroxidation. Silybin dihemisuccinate, a soluble form of the flavonoid silymarin, protects rats against liver glutathione depletion and lipid peroxidation induced by acute acetaminophen intoxication. Other biochemical parameters such as serum transaminases did not show the drastic increase observed under acetaminophen intoxication when animals were treated with the flavonoid. Preliminary results suggest that silybin dihemisuccinate may be another antidote

Superoxide dismutase depletion and lipid peroxidation in rat liver microsomal membranes: correlation with liver carcinogenesis.

The depletion of superoxide dismutase in the liver of rats held on a copper-deficient diet for 8 weeks induces two profound modifications in microsomal membrane characteristics. These membranes show: (1) a low degree of peroxidation induced in vitro by both endogenous (NADPH and tert-butylhydroperoxide) and exogenous sources (xanthine/xanthine oxidase) of oxygen radicals as revealed by malondialdehyde and diene-conjugate production; (2) a strong decrease of polyunsaturated and an increase of monounsaturated fatty acid content. These alterations are similar to those found in microsomal membrane

[Effectiveness of the elimination of lipid peroxidation products in various methods of detoxication therapy of patients with traumatic shock].

The shockogenous trauma is followed by a considerable accumulation of lipid peroxidation products in the patient's organism. The most effective of all the measures used for the detoxication was found to be extracorporal use of the donor spleen which resulted in lower content of lipid peroxidation products in blood plasma immediately after the procedure. The maximum effect was observed 1 hour later and persisted during one day after treatment.

Lipid photooxidation in erythrocyte ghosts: sensitization of the membranes toward ascorbate- and superoxide-induced peroxidation and lysis.

The damaging effects of ascorbate (AH-) and superoxide (O-2) on resealed erythrocyte ghosts containing predetermined levels of lipid hydroperoxides (LOOHs) have been studied. Continuous blue light irradiation of membranes in the presence of protoporphyrin resulted in steadily increasing LOOH levels and enhanced release of a trapped marker, glucose 6-phosphate (G6P), after a 3- to 4-h lag. Neither superoxide dismutase (SOD) nor catalase inhibited these effects, ruling out O-2 and H2O2 as reactive intermediates. A 1-h light dose produced partially photoperoxidized ghosts, which, in the dark at 3

The effect of vitamin C on in vivo lipid peroxidation in guinea pigs as measured by pentane and ethane production.

Measurements of pentane and ethane as indices of in vivo lipid peroxidation were made on samples of breath from vitamin C-sufficient and vitamin C-deficient guinea pigs injected with 23 microliters carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)/100 g body wt. Vitamin C-deficient animals produced significantly more pentane and ethane after CCl4 treatment than did vitamin C-sufficient guinea pigs. Pretreatment of vitamin C-deficient animals with 75 mg ascorbic acid/100 g body wt significantly lowered both pentane and ethane evolution. Protection against in vivo lipid peroxidation similar to that provided by ascorb

Effects of two different lipid emulsions on antioxidant status, lipid peroxidation and parenteral nutrition- related cholestasis in premature babies, a randomized-controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Olive oil-soybean oil (OO/SO) based lipid emulsions (LE) lack ω-3 PUFAs eicosapentaenoic acid -EPA and docosahexaenoic acid- DHA, which have clinical benefits on inflammatory processes. Fish oil based LEs are good sources of DHA and EPA. Fish oil, MCT, Olive oil and Soya oil (FMOS) lipid is one of the fish oil containing LEs supplemented with high levels of α-tocopherol and lower levels of phytosterol compared to OO/SO lipid emulsions. We investigated the effects of OO/SO and FMOS lipid preparations on cholestasis, levels of antioxidant enzymes and lipid peroxidation. METHODS: Pre

Low-dose curcumin reduced TNBS-associated mucin depleted foci in mice by scavenging superoxide anion and lipid peroxides, rebalancing matrix NO synthase and aconitase activities, and recoupling mitochondria.

BACKGROUND: The role of mitochondrial dysfunction in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) is still being investigated. This study evaluated the therapeutic effect of curcumin (Cur), a polyphenolic electrophile in 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced chronic colitis and mitochondrial dysfunction, in mice. METHODS: Colitis was induced by rectal instillation to mice of 30 mg kg-1 TNBS, alone or followed by daily intraperitoneal injections of Cur 25 mg kg-1. Animals were euthanized at days 3, 7, and 14, post TNBS challenge. Colon mitochondria of control mice were tr

Reactive oxygen species-induced lipid peroxidation mediates Wnt-dependent lipodystrophy and associated skin fibrosis.

Skin fibrosis is marked by extracellular matrix accumulation and dermal white adipose tissue (DWAT), resulting in tissue stiffening. We show that sustained Wnt activation in mature dermal adipocytes induces lipodystrophy and promotes fibrotic remodeling via oxidative stress. Meta-analysis of early systemic sclerosis skin transcriptomes reveals increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and lipid peroxidation. In cultured mouse dermal adipocytes, Wnt activation triggers a robust increase in ROS and lipid peroxidation, which is suppressed by scavengers. In vivo, Wnt activation elevates o

Lipid Peroxidation in Cancer Therapy: Molecular Mechanisms Involving Oxidative Stress, Cell Death, and Therapeutic Response.

Lipid peroxidation (LPO) is a process where polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in cellular membranes are oxidized. This process is mediated by reactive oxygen species (ROS) and leads to the formation of reactive products, including 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE), malondialdehyde (MDA), and oxidized phospholipids. At low concentrations these products act as second messengers in adaptive redox signalling and metabolic homeostasis, whereas at higher concentrations they compromise membrane integrity and promote cell death. Lipid peroxidation plays a crucial role in anticancer therapies. Here we focus on

Elevated maternal pre-transfer serum lipid peroxidation is associated with implantation failure and early pregnancy loss.

BACKGROUND: Embryo implantation failure and early pregnancy loss remain significant challenges in assisted reproductive technology (ART). Lipid peroxidation is known to be involved in reproductive physiology. However, its role during the implantation window and its effects on post-embryo transfer outcomes remain incompletely understood. METHODS: This translational study combined clinical and animal model research. Clinically, serum samples (n = 2040) and uterine fluid samples (n = 487) from patients undergoing in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI) cycles were anal

Heat stress promotes ferroptosis in Jiaji duck myocardium by disrupting iron homeostasis and inducing lipid peroxidation.

Heat stress is a common environmental challenge in poultry production, causing substantial economic losses and acute mortality. The heart is highly sensitive to thermal load and is a major target of heat-induced injury. Although heat stress-related myocardial injury in poultry has been linked to oxidative stress and apoptosis, the contribution of ferroptosis remains unclear. Here, we used the Jiaji duck as a model to investigate the molecular mechanisms of heat stress-induced myocardial injury. We established an acute heat stress model in Jiaji ducks (40 ± 1°C, 80% relative humidity, 3 h) and

Assessment of Immunohistochemical Expression of Lipid Peroxidation Marker 4-hydroxynonenal in Oral Lichen Planus - A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a relatively common chronic inflammatory condition of unknown origin and is classified among oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs). Emerging evidence suggests that oxidative stress (OS) and compromised antioxidant defense may play a role in its pathogenesis. OPMDs represent morphologically altered tissues with a risk of progression to oral cancer. Therefore, identifying high-risk lesions with a greater likelihood of malignant transformation is crucial. This study aimed to evaluate and compare OS levels by assessing the immunohistochemical (IHC)
