Photobiomodulation as a treatment for dermatitis caused by chemoradiotherapy for squamous cell anal carcinoma: case report and literature review.

In-field dermatitis is a severe and common adverse effect of radiation therapy, that can cause significant pain and treatment interruptions in patients with squamous cell anal carcinoma (SCAC) being treated with radical chemoradiation protocols. There are no established therapies for the treatment of radiation induced dermatitis. Photobiomodulation (PBM) is an effective and low-cost treatment for radiation induced mucositis, but have recently been explored to treat in-field dermatitis. We present a case report of the successful use of PBM for the treatment of dermatitis in the anal area in a p

Intraoral versus extraoral photobiomodulation therapy in the prevention of oral mucositis in HSCT patients: a randomized, single-blind, controlled clinical trial.

To compare the efficacy of intraoral and extraoral photobiomodulation (PBM) protocols for the prevention of oral mucositis (OM) in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) patients. A total of 60 patients was randomized into intraoral PBM (IOPBM) and extraoral PBM (EOPBM) groups. Both PBM protocols were well tolerated and no side effects were observed. EOPBM session times were one fourth of IOPBM durations. Of 60 patients, 35 (58.3%) developed ulcerated OM between day +3 and day +12. No intergroup difference was observed in OM healing times (p = 0.424). The lateral border of the tongue w

Photobiomodulation at a wavelength of 633 nm leads to faster functional recovery than 804 nm after facial nerve injury.

We analyzed the effects of photobiomodulation (PBM) of various wavelengths on regeneration of the facial nerve using in vitro and in vivo experimental models. We assessed the antioxidative effect of PBM in geniculate ganglion neurons irradiated with a diode laser at 633 nm, 780 nm and 804 nm. Wavelengths of 633 and 780 nm but not 804 nm inhibited cell death by oxidative stress. We assessed the effects of PBM on functional and morphologic recovery in rats divided into control, facial nerve damage (FND) and FND irradiated with a 633 nm or 804 nm lasers. Injured rats treated with 633-nm light had

Influence of photobiomodulation therapy on the treatment of pulmonary inflammatory conditions and its impact on COVID-19.

We are currently facing a pandemic that continuously causes high death rates and has negative economic and psychosocial impacts. Therefore, this period requires a quick search for viable procedures that can allow us to use safe and non-invasive clinical tools as prophylactic or even adjuvant methods in the treatment of COVID-19. Some evidence shows that photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) can attenuate the inflammatory response and reduce respiratory disorders similar to acute lung injury (ALI), complications associated with infections, such as the one caused by the new Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2).

Photobiomodulation Therapy (Light-Emitting Diode 630 nm) Favored the Oxidative Stress and the Preservation of Articular Cartilage in an Induced Knee Osteoarthritis Model.

Objective: To evaluate the effects of photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy on oxidative stress and histological aspects of knee osteoarthritis (OA) induced by sodium monoiodoacetate in Wistar rats. Background: OA is a chronic degenerative disease. In addition to the inflammatory role, other factors, such as redox balance, appear to contribute to changes in the articular cartilage, the main articular structure affected. PBM therapy using light-emitting diode (LED) has been proposed to treat the disease by favoring anti-inflammatory effects and modulating markers of oxidative stress, acting on the d

Low-level laser therapy for neurosensory recovery after sagittal ramus osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: Dento-skeletal deformities are treated combining orthodontic treatment with orthognathic surgery. One of the techniques most used in this type of surgery is the sagittal osteotomy of the mandible. This technique offers many advantages, but within its disadvantages is the inferior alveolar nerve paresthesia. There are various treatments that aim to recovery of the nerve bundle, and one of them is low intensity laser treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of low intensity laser therapy in the recovery of neurosensorial tissues after mandibular sagittal ost

Successful treatment of intravenous drug use-related pigmentation with Q-switched Alexandrite laser: a case report of two patients.

Patients with a history of intravenous drug usage (IVDU) often develop pathognomonic linear hyperpigmented dermatoses near injection sites. This drug use-related pigmentation can be very distressing for patients as they persist for life, are very difficult to treat, and remain a constant reminder of prior drug usage. The difficulty of treatment is due to the location of the deposited material and its exogenous nature. This article reports two cases of linear hyperpigmentation due to IVDU successfully treated using the Q-switched Alexandrite laser.

Evidence for encephalopsin immunoreactivity in interneurones and striosomes of the monkey striatum.

In this study, we examined the cellular distribution of encephalopsin (opsin 3; OPN3) expression in the striatum of non-human primates. In addition, because of our long standing interest in Parkinson's disease and neuroprotection, we examined whether parkinsonian (MPTP; 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine) insult and/or photobiomodulation (670 nm) had any impact on encephalopsin expression in this key area of the basal ganglia. Striatal sections of control naïve monkeys, together with those that were either MPTP- and/or photobiomodulation-treated were processed for immunohistochemistr
