A 46-year-old woman presented with cough for over 20 days, unrelieved by anti-inflammation treatment. Diffuse wall thickening and mildly luminal stenosis of the lower trachea and both main bronchi were observed on chest CT examination. The pathology after bronchoscopy confirmed non-Hodgkin lymphoma (mucosa-associated lymphatic tissue, MALT). FDG PET/CT was performed to evaluate the extent of the disease, which demonstrated the abnormal FDG accumulation in the diffusely thicken wall of trachea and bronchi, without lymph nodes and other extranodal tissue involvement.

Primary idiopathic chylopericardium is an extremely rare condition especially in children and young adults. Although the exact pathophysiology of primary chylopericardium has not been established, the reflux of chylous fluid into the pericardial space was suggested as the etiology. Damage to the thoracic duct valves and the communication of the thoracic duct to the pericardial lymphatics or abnormally elevated pressure in the thoracic duct could cause chylous fluid reflux. In this report, we described the case of a 4-year-old boy with primary idiopathic chylopericardium presenting as cardiac t

An 80-year-old man presented with the characteristic triad of yellow nail syndrome (chronic respiratory disorders, primary lymphedema and yellow nails) in association with coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Treatment with mechanical pleurodesis and vitamin E resulted in near complete resolution of the yellow nails, pleural effusions, and lower extremity edema. The etiology of the yellow nail syndrome has been described as an anatomical or functional lymphatic abnormality. Several conditions have previously been described as associated with this disease. This is the first report of the assoc

This report describes an infant with clinical features consistent with the yellow nail syndrome (YNS), a rare autosomal dominant disorder. He presented at birth with congenital lymphoedema and was referred at 6 months of age for investigation of recurrent cough and wheeze. He had clinical and radiological evidence of bilateral pleural effusions and a pericardial effusion. Following a lung biopsy and pericardial window these were shown to be manifestations of his lymphatic abnormality. He also had persisting middle ear effusions causing conductive deafness requiring hearing aids and secondary i

Lymphocytes in patients with chronic lymphatic leukaemia and other malignant lymphomas have an abnormally high sensitivity to colchicine in vitro. This can be expressed in a colchicine-sensitivity index and used diagnostically. Lymphocytes isolated from cutaneous infiltrates in mycosis fungoides, a cutaneous malignant T-cell lymphoma, had an increased colchicine-sensitivity index of 44 (P < 0.01). On the other hand, lymphocytes from cutaneous infiltrates of reactive inflammatory dermatitis cases had an index of 23. It would seem that the colchicine-sensitivity index is helpful in the diagnosis

This report deals with a case of acute iron intoxication in a child in which acute and chronic gastrointestinal abnormalities developed as a consequence of severe intestinal infarction and corrosion. Microscopic examination of resected small bowel revealed prominent iron deposits in areas of necrosis, in basement membranes of lymphatics, capillaries, and venules, and within platelet-fibrin thrombi. The clinical history and microscopic findings are consistent with the hypothesis of a direct action of absorbed iron on vascular walls as the pathophysiologic mechanism for the toxic effects of iron

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare disease characterized by cystic lung lesions, lymphatic abnormalities, and angiomyolipomas. It can take a significant amount of time to diagnose LAM due to the vague symptoms of fatigue, progressive dyspnea, pneumothorax, and pleural effusion. We present a case of a 29-year-old woman with recurrent spontaneous pneumothorax and progressive dyspnea who was initially misdiagnosed with asthma and was later found to have LAM. As with all rare diagnoses, there needs to be a suspicion of the disease in order for a further workup to be initiated. In patients wi…

BACKGROUND: Vascular malformations are congenital abnormalities that do not spontaneously regress and may require surgical resection for treatment.
CASE: A healthy 23-year-old woman presented with a painless, slowly enlarging mass of the mons pubis. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a cystic mass with minimal Doppler flow. The final pathology showed a combined lymphatic-venous vascular malformation. A meshed advancement flap was used to close the skin after surgical resection. These flaps create a lattice of small cutaneous defects that heal rapidly by secondary inte

Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome is a rare congenital malformation that may include port-wine stain, soft tissue and bony hypertrophy, and venous malformations and lymphatic abnormalities. Although it usually involves the limbs, it may also rarely involve the head, neck, and orofacial regions. Despite its rarity, Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome should be considered in the differential diagnosis of gingival enlargement. The condition can be easily recognized clinically, but further investigations including imaging studies have to be carried out in order to better understand the nature of the lesion. This …

We report on two sibs with high myopia, vitreoretinal degeneration (VRD), and occipital encephalocoele or scalp lesion. We review the literature on Knobloch syndrome, discuss possible causes, and suggest a possible involvement of mesoderm in the morphogenesis. One case presents with very early onset of severe eye disease, whereas the other is notable for the very mild scalp defect. In addition, both appear to have an unusual pulmonary lymphatic condition.

BACKGROUND: Migraine pathophysiology involves trigeminovascular activation and neuroinflammation, with neuropeptides such as calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) playing a key role. Growing evidence implicates glymphatic system dysfunction, particularly meningeal lymphatic vessel (mLV) mediated cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and waste clearance, as a potential contributor. However, multi-level imaging assessments glymphatic system in episodic migraine (EM) remain limited. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 38 EM patients and 22 age- and sex- comparable healthy controls (HCs). Glymphatic function

OBJECTIVE: To summarize our experiences in the diagnosis and treatment of early gastric cancer (EGC).
METHODS: The clinicopathological data of the 166 EGC inpatients who were treated in our hospital from January 1999 to January 2009 were retrospectively analyzed and their treatment outcomes were followed up.
RESULTS: Surgical treatment for ECG accounted for 9.04% (176/1946) among all the surgeries performed for gastric cancers. Among the analyzed 166 cases, 9 asymptomatic patients were diagnosed by routine examination, 29 (17.47%) had a history of gastric ulcer or chronic gastritis, and 20 (

Diffuse pulmonary lymphangiomatosis (DLP) is an extremely rare silent disease, characterized by proliferation and thickening of abnormal pulmonary, pleural, and mediastinal soft tissue lymphatic channels. Its clinical presentation is nonspecific symptoms such as cough, dyspnea, and hemoptysis. Tomographic findings for DLP include thickening of the interlobular septa and peribronchovascular interstitium and ground glass opacities. Nevertheless, the anterior mediastinal mass, associated with thickening of interlobular septa and peribronchovascular interstitial, ground glass opacities, pleural ef

A vascular malformation is an abnormal development of blood vessels that can be found in arteries, veins, or the lymphatic system. While pathology such as aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), dissections, and dolichoectasia have been documented frequently and linked to an increased incidence of stroke, we present a rare finding of a 'corkscrew' appearance of the basilar artery causing recurrent posterior circulation symptoms. Imaging during 3 separate hospitalizations showed recurrent acute strokes within the basilar artery vascular territory. A conventional cerebral angiogram reveal

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare lung disease traditionally affecting women during their childbearing years. It can be sporadic or be associated with tuberous sclerosis syndrome. It is usually manifested in the lungs, kidneys, and/or lymphatic system. It consists of an overgrowth of abnormal smooth muscle-like cells, usually along the bronchovascular structures, resulting in the formation of cysts and the destruction of the lung parenchyma. We present the case of a 43-year-old woman with a history of pleural effusion and dyspnea. A computed tomographic scan revealed a mediastinal mass,

Sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) are the first lymph nodes to drain wastes originated from cancerous tissue. There is a need for an in vivo imaging method that can image the intact SLN to further our understanding of its normal as well as abnormal functions. We report the use of ultrahigh sensitive optical microangiography (UHS-OMAG) to image functional microvascular and lymphatic vessel networks that innervate the intact lymph node in mice in vivo. The promising results show a potential role of UHS-OMAG in the future understanding and diagnosis of the SLN involvement in cancer development.

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis is a rare disease characterised by pulmonary cysts with abnormal proliferation in the lymphatic system. It occurs almost exclusively in women of fertile age due to a hormonal influence, for this reason it is extremely rare in post-menopausal patients. In these cases it is usually associated to hormone replacement therapies. It is known that this diseases is strongly associated with other conditions, such as tuberous sclerosis and renal angiomyolipomas. We present a case of a post-menopausal patient suffering from lymphangioleiomyomatosis, with no history of hormone the

A case is presented of a man with Richter's syndrome with diffuse histiocytic lymphoma following a ten-year history of untreated chronic lymphatic leukemia. He did not respond to therapy. The lymphoma cells had 61 chromosomes with aneuploidy of 13 chromosomes and 11 structurally altered chromosomes. Only chromosomes 8, 9, 12, 14, and 18 were diploid and without abnormality. Significantly, part of chromsome 1q was duplicated as in the partial trisomy of 1q reported to characterize a number of hematologic neoplasms. A large marker chromosome with subterminal centromere was a tandem duplication o

Vascular anomalies encompass a group of disorders involving abnormalities of blood and lymphatic vessels, ranging from benign cutaneous lesions to complex, life-threatening conditions. These anomalies are broadly classified into vascular tumors and malformations based on underlying pathophysiology. Despite their clinical prevalence, the management of vascular anomalies remains challenging due to their diverse presentations, variable progression, and potential for significant functional and aesthetic morbidity. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the etiology, clinical presentation

OBJECTIVE: Myasthenia gravis (MG), a neuromuscular disease mediated by anti-acetylcholine receptor (AChR) autoantibodies, is associated with thymic hyperplasia characterized by ectopic germinal centers that contain pathogenic antibody-producing B cells. Our thymic transcriptome study demonstrated increased expression of CCL21, a recruiter of immune cells. Accordingly, we are investigating its implication in MG pathogenesis.
METHODS: The expression of CCL21 and its CCR7 receptor was analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and fluorescence-activated cell sorting, respectively. Chemotaxis
