The prevalence of positional plagiocephaly is increasing. A systematic database search (Cochrane, MEDLINE, Embase, Cinahl and PEDro), critical appraisal and systematic evaluation of the quality of 14 selected studies show that the following are certain risk factors for the development of positional plagiocephaly: supine sleeping position, positional preference, one-sided handling of the child, male sex, delayed motor development, reduced neck mobility, too little "tummy time", firstborn, multiple births and premature children. Recommendations for prevention are provided.

Neutrophilic panniculitis associated with myelodysplastic syndromes is rare. We report a 59-year-old patient who initially was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and developed a sudden onset of widespread pustulosis and erythematous indurated papules. Examination of skin biopsies of a papule lesion showed dense neutrophilic infiltration limited to the subcutaneous tissue. The pustules and papules disappeared completely after treatment with systemic corticosteroids. To our knowledge, only one patient was identified by MEDLINE search of the English-language literature.

Angiolipomas are benign tumors usually found in the forearms of young adults. To the best of our knowledge only 63 cases of spinal angiolipomas have been reported in the literature up until 1999 (MEDLINE 1966-1999). We report a case of a spinal angiolipoma causing dorsal cord compression in a 44-year-old woman presenting with subacute lower limb paresthesias, in the absence of sensory or motor findings, which mimicked multiple sclerosis by history. Operative intervention was curative.

This is a case report of two patients with traumatic amputated lip due to respectively human bite and bicycle head-on-car collision. Both patients were successfully treated by microsurgical replantation within 24 hours and with post-operative leech treatment. Furthermore, a MEDLINE/PubMed search was performed for all scientific English articles of lip amputation and replantation using microsurgery. We want to address the importance of preserving amputated parts and the necessity of 24-hour access to plastic surgery and microsurgery in trauma if needed.

OUTCOMES: Cases reported from Asia suggest that maternal and fetal outcomes are worsened by SARS during pregnancy.
EVIDENCE: Medline was searched for relevant articles published in English from 2000 to 2007. Case reports were reviewed and expert opinion sought.
VALUES: Recommendations were made according to the guidelines developed by the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care.

Retrospective study on a nine year ART practice focusing on pregnancy outcomes and multiple pregnancies, their complications, the gestational duration, delivery options, the new born weights and health statements til the age of two. Post ART pregnancies seem to have an increased complication rate; multiple births are more frequent than with spontaneous conception. The first chapter deals with the entire group. The second chapter analyses several sub-groups according to the ART method employed. The results are compared to publications in PubMed and Medline.

Human ocular infestation by live filarial worm is a rare occurrence and has been reported mostly form South-East Asia. It involves the eyelids, conjunctiva, cornea, anterior chamber and uvea. No case of intravitreal Brugian microfilaria / adult worm has been found by Medline search. Here we report a case of live intravitreal adult Brugian filaria, where the parasite was successfully removed by pars plana vitrectomy. Identification of the worm was done by light microscopy and confirmed by immuno chromatographic test.

Neurological complications of hemolytic anemias are rather uncommon. We are reporting two cases of hemolytic anemia presenting as chorea and recurrent ischemic stroke. The first one is a case of chorea in a patient with sickle cell trait. Reviewing the literature we could find only one case report of chorea in sickle cell disease disease. The second is a case of recurrent ischemic stroke in hereditary spherocytosis. We could trace two reports on a Medline search, though their association was less certain.

Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) has been a social and a surgical problem for centuries and remains a challenge to surgeons. Though advances have been made in the understanding of the etiology, diagnostic procedures and management of these fistulae, controversies still exist over the ideal approach and time to repair. This review was undertaken to look into the recent literature with regard to the timing and surgical approach to VVF repair. The literature search was done using the Medline database with keywords: vesicovaginal fistula, laparoscopy and robotic repair filtered for the last 5 years.

Congenital absence of uterus and vagina, Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome, is mullerian agenesis and is the second most frequent cause of primary amenorrhea. Only atypical form of MRKH (type B) is associated with renal skeletal and ovarian abnormalities. We report the management of an unusual case of atypical MRKH, unilateral gonadal agenesis, and solitary ectopic pelvic kidney with pelviureteric junction obstruction (PUJO). After doing thorough Medline search, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first case reported with this combination.

Nephrogenic adenoma is an unusual lesion of the urinary tract first described by Davis in 1949 as a hamartoma. In 1950, Friedman and Kuhlenbeck subsequently characterized the lesion in more detail and named it nephrogenic adenoma. It appears to be a metaplastic response of the urothelium elicited by trauma and chronic irritation and is considered to be benign. A MEDLINE search of the literature from 1960 to the present revealed no previous documentation of a nephrogenic adenoma arising from a renal cortical cyst. Herein, we present such a case arising in a renal cortical cyst.

PURPOSE: We present our experience with surgical management of amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis, including preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative considerations.
METHODS: Retrospective review of the medical records and the histological slides and a Medline search of amiodarone and thyroid gland.

BACKGROUND: Among a myriad of physiological adverse affects of pneumoperitoneum-associated intra-abdominal hypertension, compromise of the mesenteric circulation is well documented.
METHODS: After experiencing a case of fatal small bowel ischemia in the aftermath of laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the literature was reviewed.
