BACKGROUND: Onchocerciasis can be effectively controlled as a public health problem by annual mass drug administration of ivermectin, but it was not known if ivermectin treatment in the long term would be able to achieve elimination of onchocerciasis infection and interruption of transmission in endemic areas in Africa. We describe 10 unlinked cases of Corynebacterium diphtheriae infection (nine cutaneous, one respiratory) in France in 2023 in persons travelling from Guinea, Mali, Senegal, Niger or Nigeria and Central African Republic. A study has been carried out in 690 patients admitted in a Paris hospital and from Mali, Senegal and Mauretania origin, in order to compare the three available techniques for the diagnosis of infection with S. haematobium: urine centrifugation deposit control, biopsy of rectal mucosa and indirect immunofluorescence test. The prognostic value of each of these three techniques has been reevaluated. A survey was conducted for trypanosomiasis of 10,875 persons living in 56 villages in the Senegal River Basin in Mali. The incidence of the disease was found to be 137.9/100,000. OBJECTIVE: To describe the ultrasonographic appearance of ureteric lesions due to Schistosoma haematobium infection and to report prevalence rates of such lesions in endemic communities in Mali before and after praziquantel treatment.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The total population (n = 961) of three S. haematobium-endemic villages in Mali was examined ultrasonographically to detect urinary tract morbidity.
