Clinical characterization of brief psychotic disorders triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic: a multicenter observational study.

This study aimed to characterize the clinical profile of patients with brief psychotic disorders (BPD) triggered by the psychosocial distress derived from the COVID-19 crisis. A multicenter study was conducted from March 14 to May 14, 2020 (the peak weeks of the pandemic in Europe). All consecutive patients presenting non-affective psychotic episodes with a duration of untreated psychosis of less than 1 month and whose onset was related to the COVID-19 crisis were recruited, but only those patients meeting Diagnostic Statistical Manual 5th edition (DSM-5) criteria for "BPD with marked stressor

Screening mammography beyond breast cancer: breast arterial calcifications as a sex-specific biomarker of cardiovascular risk.

PURPOSE: To highlight the importance of quantitative breast arterial calcifications (BAC) assessment for an effective stratification of cardiovascular (CV) risk in women, for whom current preventive strategies are inadequate. BAC, easily detectable on mammograms, are associated with CV disease and represent a potential imaging biomarker for CV disease prevention in women. METHOD: We summarized the available evidence on this topic. RESULTS: Age, parity, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia were found to positively correlate with BAC. Women with BAC have a higher CV risk than those without BAC: the re

Current role of the collagenase Clostridium histolyticum in Dupuytren's disease treatment.

BACKGROUND: Collagenase Clostridium histolyticum (CCH) is a recent treatment for Dupuytren disease, which is a fibroproliferative disorder that leads to progressive, persistent digital flexion contracture that interferes with basic daily activities. While CCH has changed the treatment of this hand disorder, numerous concerns have to be analyzed. AIMS: Our purpose is to assess the current status of this medical treatment. METHODS: Literary review based on a manual search on PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Academic. RESULTS: Pharmacoeconomic analyses support the use of CCH, but long-term s

Efficacy and safety of spontaneous ventilation technique using dexmedetomidine for rigid bronchoscopic airway foreign body removal in children.

BACKGROUND: In children, removal of an airway foreign body is usually performed by rigid bronchoscopy under general anesthesia. Debate continues regarding the respiratory mode (spontaneous or controlled ventilation) and appropriate anesthetic drugs. Dexmedetomidine has several desirable pharmacologic properties and appears to be a useful agent for airway surgeries. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluates the efficacy of spontaneous ventilation (SV) technique using dexmedetomidine for bronchoscopic removal of foreign bodies in children. METHODS: Eighty pediatric patients undergoing rigid bronchoscop

Rituximab in refractory idiopathic inflammatory myopathies and antisynthetase syndrome: personal experience and review of the literature.

In this paper, we report our experience with the use of rituximab (RTX) in the treatment of refractory idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) and review the literature on this topic. Six adult patients (5 female, 1 male) with active IIM, as defined by persistent proximal muscle weakness, elevated serum muscle enzymes, muscle magnetic resonance imaging, electromyographic and histological abnormalities, refractory to at least one immunosuppressant, including methotrexate, were treated with RTX (1,000 mg twice, 2 weeks apart). Patients were regularly followed up for serial assessment of muscle

Mood regulation in youth: research findings and clinical approaches to irritability and short-lived episodes of mania-like symptoms.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Mood regulation problems, such as severe chronic irritability or short episodes of mania-like symptoms, are common, impairing and a topic of intense recent interest to clinicians, researchers and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM)-5 process. Here, we review the most recent findings about these two presentations and discuss the approaches to their treatment. RECENT FINDINGS: Longitudinal and genetic findings suggest that chronic irritability should be regarded as a mood problem that is distinct from bipolar disorder. A proportion of children with short (less than 4

Lateral and medial epicondylitis: role of occupational factors.

Epicondylitis is a common upper-extremity musculoskeletal disorder. It is most common at the age of 40-60 years. Epicondylitis seems to affect women more frequently than men. Diagnosis of epicondylitis is clinical and based on symptoms and findings of physical examination. The prevalence of lateral epicondylitis in the general populations is approximately 1.0-1.3% in men and 1.1-4.0% in women and that of medial epicondylitis is nearly 0.3-0.6% in men and 0.3-1.1% in women. The incidence rate of medical consultations has been estimated at 0.3-1.1 for lateral and 0.1 for medial epicondylitis per

[Risks of repetitive movements in health personnel].

To date, scant attention has been devoted to the occupational risk related to repetitive movements in health personnel. Using three database, PubMed, Scopus, and EMBASE, we found 57 papers on this topic, and on possibly related upper limb symptoms and diseases. In these studies, evaluation of the risk, e.g. using the methods currently applied in industry, are lacking. Although in several studies data on the prevalence of upper limb symptoms and disorders are presented, a comparison of results is difficult as different methods were applied. Furthermore, a comparison with adequate controls is fr

Risk of cancer among hairdressers and related workers: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hairdressers and allied occupations represent a large and fast growing group of professionals. The fact that these professionals are chronically exposed to a large number of chemicals present in their work environment, including potential carcinogens contained in hair dyes, makes it necessary to carry out a systematic evaluation of the risk of cancer in this group. METHODS: We retrieved studies by systematically searching Medline and other computerized databases, and by manually examining the references of the original articles and monographs retrieved. We also contacted internati
