Increased expression of Netrin-4 is associated with allodynia in a trigeminal neuropathic pain model rats by infraorbital nerve injury.

Neuropathic pain refers to pain caused by lesions or diseases of the somatosensory nervous system that is characteristically different from nociceptive pain. Moreover, neuropathic pain occurs in the maxillofacial region due to various factors and is treated using tricyclic antidepressants and nerve block therapy; however, some cases do not fully recover. Netrin is a secreted protein crucially involved in neural circuit formation during development, including cell migration, cell death, neurite formation, and synapse formation. Recent studies show Netrin-4 expressed in the dorsal horn of the sp

Forensic value of gunpowder tattooing in identification of multiple entrance wounds from one bullet.

Multiple entrance gunshot wounds can give useful information in forensic evaluation of deaths from homicide and suicide. Although the presence of multiple entrance gunshot wounds does not absolutely exclude the possibility of suicide, they are important to the forensic investigators and pathologists in cases of assault, attempted homicide and suicide as they provide important clues for determination of number of shots fired and direction of firing. We present a case of 16 years of young woman who was shot to death by her husband. External examination revealed an entrance wound with semi-lunar

Common facial fractures: 1. Aetiology and presentation.

UNLABELLED: Fractures of the facial bones are common and, in the West, usually occur as a result of interpersonal violence. Patients may attend dentists in the first instance as derangement of occlusion and other oral symptoms are common. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: As patients with facial bone fractures may attend their dentist in the first instance, dentists should be confident in recognizing the signs and symptoms of facial fractures.

Self-inflicted gunshot wounds of the lower half of the face: the evolution toward early reconstruction.

The self-inflicted gunshot wound of the lower half of the face traditionally has been treated by multistaged and prolonged reconstructive maneuvers that often left significant and uncorrectable secondary deformities. Modern cranio-maxillofacial methods for reduction and rigid fixation of the facial skeleton, using immediate autogenous bone grafts when required, also has been efficacious for the acute management of these severe gunshot injuries. These methods can reduce the previously expected morbidity. Today's improved outcomes also are a consequence of the use of more reliable regional flaps

[Auditory canal hemorrhage as a symptom of mandibular trauma].

Auditory canal hemorrhage is usually a sign of a basal skull fracture. It is commonly unknown that this sign can also be a symptom of combined fracture of the external auditory canal and the mandibular condyle. In our investigations of patients with maxillofacial injuries we found in 15% of 197 fractures of the mandibular condyle within 3 years this combination. In sequence of these results there is a differential diagnostic need for an exact investigation to clear up these various causes in each case as first step toward an accurate therapy. The mechanism of these fractures, their etiology, a…

When is a retrobulbar haemorrhage not a retrobulbar haemorrhage?

Retrobulbar haemorrhage (RBH) is a well described condition which is said to be a common cause of acute proptosis following trauma, but the evidence for this is not strong. The authors reviewed 186 publications on the subject, finding 82 cases of RBH related to trauma. This analysis suggests that in over half of the cases described, RBH was never proven conclusively. In the authors' experience RBH is not a common cause of acute proptosis following trauma and other causes need to be considered if patients are to be managed appropriately.

Prehospital determination of tracheal tube placement in severe head injury.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this prospective study in the prehospital setting was to compare three different methods for immediate confirmation of tube placement into the trachea in patients with severe head injury: auscultation, capnometry, and capnography. METHODS: All adult patients (>18 years) with severe head injury, maxillofacial injury with need of protection of airway, or polytrauma were intubated by an emergency physician in the field. Tube position was initially evaluated by auscultation. Then, capnometry and capnography was performed (infrared method). Emergency physicians evaluated cap

Hospital Visits Related to Head and Neck Injuries and Domestic Abuse: A Report From 2017 to 2024 in Saskatchewan, Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Domestic abuse is a significant public health issue associated with physical harm and long-term health consequences. Injuries involving the head, face, and oral region are among the most frequent physical manifestations, making oral and maxillofacial trauma a potentially critical indicator of abuse in clinical settings. This study aimed to examine the occurrence, demographic characteristics, and injury patterns of head and neck trauma associated with domestic abuse using provincial hospital-based data from Saskatchewan, Canada. METHODS: A retrospective population-based analysis

A Patient-Specific 3D Printed Lingual Nerve Protector in Third Molar Extraction.

We present a novel, patient-specific 3D-printed lingual nerve protector designed to minimize the risk of nerve injury during mandibular third molar extraction, a common cause of lingual nerve damage. Lingual nerve injuries, often resulting from trauma, dental procedures, or maxillofacial surgeries, lead to significant functional impairments. Using computed tomography (CT) data, the custom protector is fabricated through 3D printing with a self-retaining structure to shield the lingual mucosa and nerve. The device effectively separates the lingual nerve from the surgical field without requiring

Dental impactions related to pseudoxanthoma elasticum.

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum is a rare genetic disorder causing degeneration and calcification of elastic fibers, leading to injuries in the skin, retina, and cardiovascular system. This report describes a case of a 30-year-old woman whose diagnosis of pseudoxanthoma elasticum was confirmed after a skin biopsy. The patient presented at the Clinical Management Unit of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Virgen del Rocio Hospital (Seville, Spain) with pain related to a semi-erupted lower first molar. Radiologic examination disclosed multiple dental impactions. Cases of oligodontia, ame

One-stage surgical approach to rehabilitate severely injured anterior teeth in a young woman.

Trauma of the maxillofacial district may cause severe injuries to patients, such as tooth loss or tooth fractures, which can irreversibly compromise aesthetics and function. The aim of this clinical report was to illustrate the possibility of achieving positive aesthetic and functional outcomes in a young patient through a 1-stage surgical approach. In a single stage, the patient underwent extraction of a compromised tooth, insertion of 5 implants, bone and connective grafts, and management of a fresh scar. A satisfied and appeased result from the patient's and clinician's points of view was ob

Use of titanium mesh for reconstruction of extensive defects in fronto-orbito-ethmoidal fracture.

Traumatic injuries treatment of the fronto-naso-orbito-ethmoidal region has been one of the most challenging treatments within maxillofacial surgery, particularly of extensive orbital defects, very common in this type of pathologic condition. A 48-year-old man involved in a car collision presented an extensive bilateral fracture of the orbit medial wall, nasal bones, the nasal septum, and the frontal anterior table. The clinical and tomographic findings concluded the diagnosis of a maxilla and fronto-naso-orbito-ethmoidal fracture. Among the variety of biomaterials, the titanium mesh was elect

Infraorbital nerve posttraumatic deficit and displaced zygomatic fractures: a double-center study.

Typical associated signs and symptoms of displaced zygomatic fractures include lack of zygoma projection, diplopia, and sensory disturbances of the infraorbital nerve (ION). The aim of this article was to assess eventual associations between ION sensory disturbances and zygomatic fractures patterns. This study is based on 2 databases that have continuously recorded patients hospitalized with maxillofacial fractures in 2 Departments of Maxillofacial Surgery in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and Turin, Italy between 2001 and 2010. The following data for patients surgically treated for displaced zyg
