[Anisakiasis of the stomach--a case report from Germany].

Anisakiasis or "herring worm disease" is one of the most important parasitic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract in Japan. In 1988 Lorenz … al extraction of possible larvae is the only effective therapy, as anthelmintics against nematodes (mebendazole, albendazole, thiabendazole) are ineffective.

Pigmented nails and Strongyloides stercoralis infestation causing clinical worsening in a patient treated for immunoproliferative small intestinal disease: two unusual observations.

Immunoproliferative small intestinal disease (IPSID) is commonly reported from developing countries with poor socioeconomic conditions, hygiene, and high frequency of gastrointestinal infections and infestations. The disease requires anti-malignant chemotherapy in lymphomatous stage. Reported here is a 20-year old man with IPSID lymphoma who responded to anti-malignant chemotherapy initially, but later deteriorated due to Strongyloides stercoralis infestation, which was treated successfully with mebendazole. Importance of an early recognition and adequate treatment for gastrointestinal infecti…

[Osseous echinococcosis].

Hydatid disease is caused by the parasitic tapeworm Echinococcus. The larval stage of this parasite can thrive in many parts of the body, mo … of computer-aided design (CAD) techniques. This surgical procedure was combined with chemotherapy (mebendazole). The necessity of radical resection in osseus hydatid disease is discussed.

[Hydatidosis. A survey].

With the increased influx of foreign workers, refugees and immigrants, particularly from endemic areas, we will probably see more patients w … ical treatment has its place primarily pre- and postoperatively. The preferred drug is albendazole. Mebendazole is now considered obsolete. It is not possible to monitor the effect of treatment with current serological methods.

Fatal human pulmonary infection caused by an Angiostrongylus-like nematode.

An immunocompetent man developed malaise, fever, progressive weight loss, eosinophilia, and transient pulmonary infiltrates that responded to steroid treatment but recurred after its discontinuation. Examinations of feces, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, and pulmonary tissue obtained during a 50-day period of hospitalization yielded negative results. When a new bronchoalveolar lavage sample and a new pulmonary biopsy specimen showed nematode larvae and adult worms, treatment with thiabendazole was started. However, therapy with this agent and then with mebendazole had no impact on the patient's …

[A survey of intestinal parasites of the foreign laborers (Indonesians and Filipinos) in Ishikawa Prefecture].

A survey of intestinal parasites was conducted on 198 foreign workers aged 19-27 from Inodonesia and Philippines. They work for a private co … t the antigen of HK-9 strain of E. histolytica. Sixty-three cases of trichuriasis were treated with mebendazole at a dose of 200 mg/day x 3 consecutive days. Re-examination revealed that 53 (85.5%) of them were cured.

[Echinococcosis involvement of the heart].

A case report is given of a 37-year-old patient who had echinococcus infestment the heart. Diagnosis was established after drainage of the pericardium, when cysts of a diameter between 0.5 and 3 cm were evacuated. During this procedure the pericardium and the left ventricle were searched and revised extensively and drug therapy with Mebendazole was instituted. In spite of that a new cyst developed in the pericardium and a big cyst in the abdomen, was found which had practically transformed the whole left lobe of the liver into a cyst. Both lesions were removed surgically. It must be emphasized…

Epidemiology of intestinal helminthiases in a rural community of Ethiopia: Is it time to expand control programs to include Strongyloides stercoralis and the entire community?

BACKGROUND: Soil transmitted helminths are highly prevalent worldwide. Globally, approximately 1.5 billion people are infected with Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura or hookworm. Endemic countries carry out periodic mass treatment of at-risk populations with albendazole or mebendazole as a control measure. Most prevalence studies have focused on school aged children and therefore control programs are implemented at school level, not at community level. In this study, the prevalence of intestinal helminths, including Strongyloides stercoralis, was examined using a comprehensive laborato…

Pediatric Anal Pruritus and Misdiagnosis: Dipylidium caninum in a Spanish Child with a Review of Reported Human Cases.

Intestinal helminth infections in children remain a significant public health problem worldwide. Among these, those caused by cestodes can be misdiagnosed, as occurs with dipylidiasis, a zoonosis caused by Dipylidium caninum. Although common in dogs and cats, human infection is rare and may be misdiagnosed as Enterobius vermicularis due to overlapping symptoms. We present the case of a 3-year-old Spanish boy with intense anal itching, treated twice with mebendazole for presumed pinworm infection without improvement. Persistent symptoms, anorexia, and weight loss prompted a parasitological exam…

A Semantic Surprise in Colon: Gastrodiscoides hominis.

Human gastrodiscoidiasis is a rare, geographically restricted trematode infection caused by Gastrodiscoides hominis, an amphistome platyhelm … scending colon, subsequently confirmed microbiologically as G. hominis and effectively treated with mebendazole. Our case highlights the importance of considering rare helminthic infections in patients with chronic gastrointestinal symptoms, particularly those from endemic areas, and the role of colonoscopy in confirming the diagnosis and guiding treatment.

In vitro efficacy of Capparis spinosa extraction against larvae viability of Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a chronic zoonotic parasitic disease caused by infection with the larvae of the Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.) cluster. Currently, new drugs are urgently required due to the poor therapeutic effect of the existing drugs albendazole and mebendazole. Capparis spinosa, a traditional medicinal plant, has potential therapeutic effects on various diseases based on extracts from its fruit and other parts. The results of this study demonstrated that the water-soluble and ethanolic extracts of C. spinosa fruit had in vitro killing effects on the larvae of E. gra…

A human case of Hymenolepis diminuta in a child from eastern Sicily.

We report a case of Hymenolepis diminuta infection in a 2-year-old child living in a suburban area of Catania, Italy. This case was initially referred to us as Dipylidium caninum infection, which was not cured after being treated twice with mebendazole. However, by analyzing the clinical presentation and stool samples we arrived to the diagnosis of H. diminuta infection. The case presented with atypical allergic manifestations which had never been reported as clinical features of symptomatic H. diminuta infection; remittent fever with abdominal pain, diffuse cutaneous itching, transient thorac…

Use of benzimidazoles in children younger than 24 months for the treatment of soil-transmitted helminthiasis.

Considerable experience and limited quantitative evidence indicate that infections with the soil-transmitted helminths Ascaris lumbricoides … ildren is likely to be the same as in older children. Accordingly, we conclude that albendazole and mebendazole may be used to treat children as young as 12 months if local circumstances show that relief from ascariasis and trichuriasis is justified.

Teratogenicity of flubendazole in rats.

Flubendazole, the p-fluoroderivative of mebendazole, was suspended in deionized water, and administered by gavage once daily to pregnant rats on days 8 through 15 of pregnancy at 0 (control), 2.5, 10, 40 or 160 mg/kg. Fetuses were removed on day 21 of pregnancy by caesarian section, and examined by routine teratological methods. The highest dose (160 mg/kg) was embryocidal and resulted in a significant increase in the fetal resorption rate. There was a dose-dependent decrease in fetal body weights which was significant at 40 mg/kg or more. The 40 and 160 mg/kg doses induced significant fetal (…
