To meet the need of establishing firm normative data regarding the secretion/excretion of human melatonin, nighttime urinary melatonin of 16 healthy volunteers was measured in samples collected monthly over a period of 1 year. Prepubertal ewe lambs were treated with empty or filled melatonin implants. The implants were placed s.c. at birth and pituitary responsiveness to various doses of LHRH, LH/FSH pulsatility and prolactin and melatonin secretion were examined at 10, 19, 28, 36 and 45 weeks of age. The effect of different doses and durations of melatonin infusions on plasma melatonin concentrations has been studied in pinealectomized Syrian hamsters maintained under short photoperiod at either 7 degrees C or 18 degrees C.
