Painful menstruation is a cyclic painful condition that adversely affects the woman's wellbeing for a large part of her life. Its pathogenesis is not always understood. Prostaglandins seem to be intimately involved in primary dysmenorrhoea although it is difficult to understand the underlying cause for their excessive secretion. Abnormalities in plasma steroid levels could account for the disturbance, especially significantly elevated plasma levels of estradiol in the luteal phase. Plasma levels of vasopressin appear to be higher in women with dysmenorrhea suggesting a possible aetiological ro

This paper describes the relationship between menstrual bleeding patterns recorded and reasons for discontinuing method use given by women using one of four types of hormonal contraception: combined oral pills, progestogen-only oral pills, a vaginal ring or depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA). The women were recruited to five clinical trials, each of which lasted at least 48 weeks. The subject's reason for discontinuation was recorded if she stopped contraceptive use before the scheduled time. Overall, the reason expressed for discontinuing method use was a close reflection of the subject

Night work has been associated with adverse effects in terms of reproductive health. Specifically, menstruation has been suggested to be negatively impacted by night work, which again may influence fertility. This study investigated whether working nights is related to menstrual characteristics and if there is a relationship between shift work disorder (SWD) and menstruation. The study was cross-sectional, response rate 38%. The sample comprised female nurses who were members of the Norwegian Nurses Association; below 50 yr of age, who were not pregnant, did not use hormonal pills or intrauter

Using a data set of women who longitudinally recorded menstrual and reproductive events, we examined menstrual cycle characteristics in relationship to early and late menarche, early and late menopause, and deferred parity, three variables epidemiologically related to breast cancer incidence. Women with late onset of menarche had longer and more variable cycles in the 10 years after menarche than did those with early onset. Women with late onset of menopause had longer and more variable cycles in the premenopausal interval than did those with early onset. Cumulative fertility in women after ma

BACKGROUND: Adolescent girls with Intellectual disability (ID) are amongst the most vulnerable and underserved populations with special menstrual health needs. The prevalence of menstrual difficulties and premenstrual symptoms among people with ID often goes unrecognized, is poorly communicated and poorly managed which in turn contributes to functional limitations, increased caregiver burden and reduced quality of life. There is a lack of evidence from India regarding multidimensional PMS patterns and integrated supportive care approaches for girls with ID.
OBJECTIVE: To assess menstrual heal

BACKGROUND: Congenital obstructive genital tract anomalies are rare but clinically significant causes of menstrual outflow obstruction, endometriosis, and subfertility. Surgical correction aims to restore reproductive potential, yet evidence to guide counselling on fertility and pregnancy outcomes remains fragmented.
OBJECTIVE: To synthesise and pool published data on fertility, obstetric, and neonatal outcomes following surgical correction of congenital obstructive anomalies, comparing outcomes across anomaly types to inform individualised counselling.
STUDY DESIGN: A systematic review was

Menstrual irregularity is a common health concern among female adolescents, with potential impacts on their family life, social participation, academic performance, and overall well-being. Therefore, this study aims to assess the prevalence of menstrual irregularity and identify its associated factors among female high school students in the region. A multicenter, facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 714 female students from 11 high schools, selected using a multistage sampling technique. Data were collected through a pre-tested, self-administered questionnaire, entered int
