Beyond Reflection: A Culturally Responsive, Mentalization-Based Balint Model for Medical Education.

Balint groups are a widely used form of reflective practice in medical education that offer clinicians a structured space to examine the emotional and relational dimensions of patient care. A substantial body of evidence suggests that participation can enhance empathy, communication skills, and professional resilience. Traditional Balint formats, however, do not explicitly address two critical areas: (1) cultural humility, recognition of how identity, power, and social context shape clinical encounters; and (2) mentalization, the ability to understand one's own and others' thoughts, feelings,

Encounters between people with mental health and/or substance use problems and ambulance clinicians: a qualitative interview study in Norway.

BACKGROUND: Interactions between ambulance clinicians and people with mental health and/or substance use problems are frequent, and international studies show that these encounters are often shaped by stigma, power dynamics and challenges to patient autonomy. However, there is limited research exploring patients' experiences of ambulance services in the Norwegian context. This study addresses this knowledge gap. METHODS: This qualitative study was based on in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 23 people with mental health and/or substance use problems recruited from primary and specialize

People experiencing homelessness: Their potential exposure to COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Insufficient housing quality is associated with stress and mental health impacts. Crowding, pollution, noise, inadequate lighting, lack of access to green spaces, and other environmental factors associated with slums can exacerbate mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, violence, and other forms of social dysfunction. METHOD: The studies were identified using large-sized newspapers with international circulation. RESULTS: Experts say that people who sleep in shelters or on the streets already have lower life expectancy, suffer from addiction, and have underlying

Socio-political aspects of mental health practice with Arabs in the Israeli context.

Since the 1948 establishment of the Israeli state, an event described by Arab peoples as "Al-Nakbah" (catastrophe), the Arab minority in Israel has experienced oppression, trauma and social exclusion; they feel defeated, disempowered and poorer. There are huge gaps in quality of life between Arab and Jewish Israelis. Such social inequities, as well as other issues such as polygamy, have been identified as risk factors for psychological distress. This situation puts the Israeli Arab, like other post-colonial peoples, in an attitude of ambivalence towards modern mental health services. On the on

Childhood developmental vulnerabilities associated with early life exposure to infectious and noninfectious diseases and maternal mental illness.

BACKGROUND: Fetal exposure to infectious and noninfectious diseases may influence early childhood developmental functioning, on the path to later mental illness. Here, we investigated the effects of in utero exposure to maternal infection and noninfectious diseases during pregnancy on offspring developmental vulnerabilities at age 5 years, in the context of estimated effects for early childhood exposures to infectious and noninfectious diseases and maternal mental illness. METHODS: We used population data for 66,045 children from an intergenerational record linkage study (the New South Wales

Evaluating the impact of a two-day family therapy training for adolescents on course mastery, trainee attitude, self-efficacy and therapeutic competence in China.

BACKGROUND: Family therapy (FT) is an evidence-based intervention for adolescent mental health issues, yet brief, empirically evaluated FT training programs are scarce in China. This study aims to evaluate the impact of a two-day intensive FT training program on trainees (i.e., psychotherapists with fewer than five exposures to formal psychotherapy training) in terms of their course mastery, attitudes toward psychotherapy, therapeutic self-efficacy and clinical competence, and to explore whether the participants’ attitudes and self-efficacy toward FT are associated with their demographic and p

Exploring the Skills Prioritised in the Assessment of Students Pursuing Adult Nursing, Post-COVID: A Qualitative Analysis.

AIM: To explore comments made by registered nurse practice assessors during the clinical assessment of students pursuing adult nursing. BACKGROUND: Student nurses are entering a workforce that has changed professional and educational nursing practice systems due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Limited placement learning during lockdowns reduced opportunities for students to practise clinical skills in person. However, the current state of practice assessment for students pursuing adult nursing, particularly post-COVID, has yet to be explored. DESIGN: Qualitative content analysis. METHODS: Data we

Emotional Adjustment among Adolescent Students with and without Specific Learning Disabilities.

Adolescence is a psychologically vulnerable stage in which problems of emotional adjustment and psychological well-being can appear. The aim of this study is to analyse the relationship and comparison of emotional deficits and resources among adolescents with or without specific learning disabilities. We evaluated 80 students distributed into two groups: 40 adolescents with specific learning disabilities and 40 normative adolescents matched with the previous group in terms of age, sex, and school year. The study variables are internalising problems (anxiety and depression), externalising probl

The protective role of mentalizing: Reflective functioning as a mediator between child maltreatment, psychopathology and parental attitude in expecting parents.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment impacts parenting and has intergenerational consequences. It is therefore crucial to identify clinically responsive resilience-promoting factors in pregnant women and expecting men with history of childhood maltreatment. Mentalization, or reflective functioning, appears as a promising concept to understand risk and resilience in the face of childhood maltreatment. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the multivariate relationship between exposure to childhood maltreatment, reflective functioning, psychological symptoms and parental attitude in expecting parents.

Self-regulation and its relations to adaptive functioning in low income youths.

Most studies of self-regulation involving children have linked it to specific outcomes within a single domain of adaptive functioning. The authors examined the association of self-regulation with a range of indices of adaptive functioning among 155 youth ages 8-18 years from families with very low income. Controlling for other explanatory variables, self-regulation was strongly associated with various outcome measures in the areas of mental health, behavior, academic achievement, and social competence. The authors also contrasted youths relatively high and low in self-regulation (the top and b

The Double-Edged Sword of Short Video Use: Opposing Pathways to Depressive Symptoms in Middle-Aged and Older Adults.

The growing prevalence of short video platforms among middle-aged and older adults raises questions about their mental health implications. Using a national survey of 5,039 Chinese adults aged 50 years and above, this study examined how short video use relates to depressive symptoms through competing mechanisms using structural equation modeling. The results showed a dual-path pattern: Short video use was associated with fewer depressive symptoms via more positive attitudes toward aging, but also with increased symptoms via Internet addiction. Moderation analyses indicated that higher levels o

Special considerations for evaluating psilocybin-facilitated psychotherapy in vulnerable populations.

Psilocybin-facilitated psychotherapy shows potential transdiagnostic efficacy for a range of mental health conditions. Though vulnerable populations bear disproportionate mental health burden, they have been largely neglected in the clinical psilocybin literature. However, if the field is to best respond to the diverse needs of individuals from vulnerable populations, care must be taken to ensure these individuals are represented in the empirical research. This report calls attention to this concern by detailing the challenges and opportunities associated with evaluating psilocybin-facilitated

Nursing care for people with delirium superimposed on dementia.

Nursing and healthcare is changing in response to an ageing population. There is a renewed need for holistic nursing to provide clinically competent, appropriate and timely care for patients who may present with inextricably linked mental and physical health requirements. This article explores the dichotomy in healthcare provision for 'physical' and 'mental' health, and the unique role nurses have when caring for people with delirium superimposed on dementia (DSD). Delirium is prevalent in older people and recognised as 'acute brain failure'. As an acute change in cognition, it presents a uniq

The role of patient activation in psychiatric visits.

OBJECTIVE: This study identified ways that consumers of mental health services are active participants in psychiatric treatment. METHODS: Four providers (three psychiatrists and one nurse practitioner) were recruited, and ten consumers with severe mental illness were recruited per provider (40 total). Consumers completed questionnaires on patient activation, illness self-management, and medication attitudes on the day of a psychiatric visit. The visit was audiotaped, transcribed, and thematically analyzed. Providers gave information on diagnosis, substance use disorder, and medication adheren

Mental health of adolescents reared in institutional care in Turkey: challenges and hope in the twenty-first century.

The objectives of the study are (i) to describe and compare the epidemiology of emotional/behavioral problems and associated risk/protective factors among nationally representative samples of institutionally reared and similarly aged community-based adolescents brought up in their natural homes by means of youth self-reports, caregiver/parent, and teacher informants; and (ii) to identify mental health service needs and utilization. A cross-sectional survey was conducted between November 2005 through April 2006 using an equal probability cluster sample of 11-18 year old adolescents in instituti

Ending Disparities and Achieving Justice for Individuals with Mental Disabilities.

The intersection of crime and mental disabilities is a topic of intense public scrutiny and concern. It is well known that the widespread closure of psychiatric hospitals led to an increase in the arrest and incarceration of individuals with mental illness. Nationally, as the number of state hospital beds that remain open "has fallen to its lowest level on record, … mentally ill individuals inside and outside the criminal justice system" compete for scarce resources in "a bed shell game with life-and-death implications." Against this backdrop, attorneys who practice in New York encounter statu

Minds matter: Gaps in the psychosocial support of advanced practice nursing students.

BACKGROUND: Advanced Practice Nursing students (APRN students) face many stressors personally, professionally, and academically while pursuing a graduate nursing degree. These negative events result in greater than 50% of the students considering withdrawing from the program. Despite the growing global demand for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), this student population remains among the least studied. PURPOSE: The author aimed to discover strategies to support the self-care, well-being, and resilience of graduate nursing students to increase academic retention. METHODS: The autho

End-of-life care for forensic psychiatric patients: Ethical, legal, and systemic challenges in integrating palliative approaches.

End-of-life (EOL) care for patients with serious mental illness (SMI) in forensic mental health settings remains a critical yet underexplored area of healthcare. Individuals with SMI experience significant health disparities, including reduced life expectancy due to preventable chronic illnesses. These challenges are compounded in forensic settings by legal constraints, systemic neglect, and limited access to palliative care services. This narrative review examines the unique barriers to EOL care in forensic psychiatric institutions. Key issues explored include diagnostic overshadowing, restri

Identifying stressors and coping resources among Austrian farmers: A mixed-methods study for targeted prevention and health promotion.

OBJECTIVE: Farmers face elevated mental health risks due to complex occupational stressors. This study examines subjectively perceived burdens and coping resources among Austrian farmers to inform targeted prevention. METHODS: An anonymous online survey conducted in Austria (October 2024-February 2025) included a sample of 2006 farmers. Two open-ended questions were analyzed using qualitative content analysis to identify categories of burdens and coping resources. These were subsequently analyzed using multivariable binary logistic regression models with sociodemographic, occupational, and me
