Persisting Toward a Career in Biomedical Research: A Black, Male Scientists' Becoming-Scientist-With Multiple Spatial Configurations.

This study explores the process of becoming-scientist-with, a dynamic and relational concept that redefines science identity development as a nonlinear, evolving journey. Focused on a Black male student, Travis, the study examines how his science identity was shaped through entanglements with various material and discursive forces across multiple science, technology, engineering, math, and medicine (STEMM) learning spaces. Becoming-scientist-with is conceptualized as a continual negotiation of identity within these environments, emphasizing the roles of power, systemic racism, and institutiona

Putting together the pieces of polio: how Dorothy Horstmann helped solve the puzzle.

Dr. Dorothy Horstmann, epidemiologist, virologist, clinician, and educator, was the first woman appointed as a professor at the Yale School of Medicine. Horstmann made significant contributions to the fields of public health and virology, her most notable being the demonstration that poliovirus reached the central nervous system via the bloodstream, upsetting conventional wisdom and paving the way for polio vaccines. In 1961, she was appointed a professor at Yale School of Medicine, and in 1969, she became the first woman at Yale to receive an endowed chair, which was named in honor of her men

Unusual causes of hypokalaemia and paralysis.

We demonstrate how the application of physiological principles may help to identify unusual causes of a very low plasma potassium (K+) concentration (P(K)) and paralysis. In the two patients described, the short time course of the illness suggested that there was an acute shift of K+ into cells. The combination of a low rate of excretion of K+, the absence of a metabolic acid-base disorder, and the fact that the clinical findings occurred very soon after a large intake of carbohydrate supported this impression. Surprisingly, the P(K) remained low for many hours after these stimuli to shift K+

Beyond Observation: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study of Role Modeling Experiences Among Clinical Residents in an Ethiopian Teaching Hospital: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Role modeling is universally regarded as essential to professional identity formation in medical education, yet its experiential and embodied complexity remains underexamined, particularly outside well-resourced Western settings. This study investigated how clinical residents in an Ethiopian teaching hospital experience role modeling relationships, and how cultural hierarchy, resource scarcity, and postcolonial institutional structures shape that experience. METHODS: We conducted a hermeneutic phenomenological study combining van Manen's life world existential with Interp

Peer Prescriber Support Strategies to Increase Buprenorphine Prescribing in Primary Care.

BACKGROUND: Opioid use disorder continues to cause significant morbidity and mortality in the United States. Buprenorphine is a highly effective treatment option, but is not easily accessible due in part to an insufficient prescriber workforce. Primary care professionals (PCPs) have the potential to greatly improve access to buprenorphine, but they report significant barriers such as inadequate addiction training. This study aimed to characterize the value of different peer prescriber support training models for PCPs practicing in urban and rural clinics in Ohio. METHODS: We interviewed 26 pu

Randomized Controlled Trial Testing an HIV/STI Prevention Intervention Among People Leaving Incarceration Who Were Assigned Male at Birth, Have Sex with Men and A Substance Use Disorder.

HIV disproportionately impacts minoritized individuals, particularly those of intersectional minoritized identities. Incarceration disproportionately impacts minoritized individuals as well, and increases HIV risk, in part due to its disruption to people's lives, social networks, and access to care. We developed MEPS, a 6-month intervention designed to holistically support HIV prevention in men who have sex with men and transgender women leaving incarceration. We tested MEPS in a 1:1 randomized controlled trial with 208 individuals. All participants received a needs assessment and personalized
