The human brain at stage 16, including the initial evagination of the neurohypophysis.

Thirty-nine sectioned embryos of stage 16 were studied. Up to this stage the amygdaloid body is derived entirely from the medial eminence, which was purely diencephalic in stage 14, but now extends also to the telencephalon. The area of the future olfactory bulb is indicated by the presence of olfactory fibres entering the brain wall; the future olfactory tubercle is characterized by cellular islands. The presence of the hippocampal thickening and various histological features make it possible to outline the main, future cortical areas already at this early stage: archi-, paleo-, and neopalliu

Unilateral left paramedian infarction of thalamus and midbrain: a clinico-pathological study.

In a patient with a unilateral embolic infarct in the left posterior thalamo-subthalamic paramedian artery territory, neuropathological studies showed involvement of the intralaminar, dorsomedial, and internal part of the ventral posterior nuclei of the thalamus, of the rostral part of the mesencephalic reticular formation, and of the posterior commissure. The patient showed upgaze palsy for voluntary saccades, smooth pursuit and vestibulo-ocular movements, sustained downgaze, right-sided motor hemineglect and facio-brachial hypaesthesia, motor transcortical aphasia and anterograde amnesia. Th

Cheiro-oral syndrome following midbrain haemorrhage.

Cheiro-oral syndrome, a sensory disturbance of the corner of the mouth and the palm of the hand due to a lesion in the midbrain has never been reported previously. We describe a 67-year-old woman with cheiro-oral syndrome following midbrain haemorrhage confirmed by computed tomographic (CT) scan. A CT scan and neurological findings showed that the syndrome was due to a lesion in the medial lemniscus of left midbrain. Consequently, not only parietal lobe lesions and limited lesions in the inferior medial portion of the posterolateral ventral nucleus (VPL) and lateral part of the posteromedial v

Oculomotor nuclear complex infarction. Clinical and radiological correlation.

We describe a patient with an isolated mesencephalic dorsal tegmental infarct affecting the oculomotor nuclear complex and medial longitudinal fasciculus, documented by high-resolution computed tomography, after undergoing percutaneous transluminal coronary artery angioplasty. Clinically, the patient exhibited bilateral ptosis, bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia, transient convergence retractory nystagmus, and minimal somnolence. We believe the combined clinical and radiological findings favor the presence of a caudal, dorsal, and paramedian embolic infarct in the territory of the paramedi

Projections from the pericruciate cortex to the nucleus of Darkschewitsch and other structures at the mesodiencephalic junction in the cat.

After injecting a mixture of tritiated amino acids into various regions of the frontal cortices of cats, autoradiograms of the mesodiencephalic junctional region were processed. When the injections were placed in the lateral part of the motor area of the hand or arm regions, silver grains were manifested in the nucleus of Darkschewitsch (ND) in its whole rostrocaudal extent, and they were observed also in the ventrolateral part of the anterior pretectal nucleus (PA) and in the caudal portion of the posterior pretectal nucleus (PP). Following injections made into the medialmost part of the ante

Connections and visual-field mapping in cat's tectoparabigeminal circuit.

1. The aim of these experiments was to analyze the organization of the reciprocal connections between the cat's superior colliculus and parabigeminal nucleus. Both physiological and anatomical techniques were employed. 2. A population of cells in the superficial gray and upper optic layers of the colliculus was labeled retrogradely by horseradish peroxidase injections into the parabigeminal nucleus. No other sources of input to the nucleus were found in the brain stem or diencephalon. 3. A map of the visual field within the parabigeminal nucleus was reconstructed by plotting visual receptive f

Hematoma of the quadrigeminal plate. Case report.

The authors report a case in which a hematoma of the quadrigeminal plate resulted from the rupture of a "cryptic" arteriovascular malformation (AVM) fed by the artery of the quadrigeminal plate. The AVM was symptomatic before rupturing and this clinical feature, associated with the lack of angiographic demonstration, led to the erroneous preoperative diagnosis of a tumor. In retrospect, the only finding that might have suggested the correct diagnosis was the beaded appearance on the ventriculogram of the aqueduct due to blood clots into this fluid space.

[Heat pulsation as a method of functional loading during electroencephalography].

In most of the normals who were studied with the aid of thermal pulsation there was an expressed shift of bioelectrical brain activity towards a synchronization. In patients with generalized epileptical fits and with mesodiencephalic lesions under the influence of thermal pulsation there was a distinct expression an increase of pathological activity. This effect obviously exceeded the results of a use of photostimulation and hyperventilation. In patients with focal lesions of the hemospheres the effectivity of of the method appeared to less.

Role of oxytocin in the neuroadaptation to drugs of abuse.

Oxytocin (OXT), a neurohypophyseal hormone, has a wide range of behavioral effects outside its classic peripheral endocrine functions. OXT i … orphine tolerance and dependence, and cocaine administration, increased dopamine utilization in the mesencephalon and in the nucleus accumbens, respectively. OXT treatment decreased the alpha-methylparatyrosine-induced dopamine utilization in the mesencephalon and in the nucleus accumbens-septal complex. Chronic OXT treatment decreased the number of apparent bi …

Coronin1A Regulates the Trafficking of Alpha Synuclein in Microglia.

Microglia respond to cytotoxic protein aggregates associated with the progression of neurodegenerative disease. Pathological protein aggrega … d the presence of a cathepsin-associated 55 kD PARP cleavage product. Postmortem analysis of the PD mesencephalon supported a role for Coro1A in microglia, revealing elevated levels of Coro1A protein in human PD brains compared with those of healthy donors. Findings are relevant to the distribution of pathological αsyn and indicate that Coro1a protects microgli …

Endoplasmic reticulum stress modulation by Alpha-Pinene in a rotenone-induced rat model of Parkinson's disease.

Age is the most significant risk factor for Parkinson's disease, a common and progressive neurodegenerative disorder; however, exposure to t … substantia nigra. Additionally, according to the biochemical analyses in the prefrontal cortex and mesencephalon regions of the brain, it was found that Alpha Pinene inhibited apoptosis and reduced endoplasmic reticulum stress. The results indicate that Alpha Pinene is a valuable compound for Parkinson's disease with its versatile neuroprotective effect.
