Mining predicted essential genes of Brugia malayi for nematode drug targets.

We report results from the first genome-wide application of a rational drug target selection methodology to a metazoan pathogen genome, the … drug targets highlight components of key processes in nematode biology such as central metabolism, molting and regulation of gene expression.

Monitoring northern fowl mites (Acari: Macronyssidae) in caged laying hens: feasibility of an egg-based sampling system.

Northern fowl mites were monitored on a caged-layer operation in southern California for 22 mo. Three experienced observers underestimated actual numbers of mites in the vent region approximately 80% of the time. Errors were higher for heavy infestations. Observer estimates were highly correlated with each other (r > 0.89, P < 0.01) and with mite numbers estimated by vent feather removal (r > 0.82, P < 0.01). Mites on hens varied between houses and over time. Molting consistently reduced mite numbers, but did not eliminate then in a flock. Long-term monitoring of individual sentinel hens demon…

Broad complex Z2 functions as an upstream 20E-responsive regulator of the midgut chitinase gene HaCHT4 in Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

BACKGROUND: Chitinases and ecdysone are both crucial for insect growth and development, yet the regulatory interplay between them remains po … that HaBRC Z2 might act as a potential upstream regulator of HaCHT4, thereby regulating the larval molting process in H. armigera. However, direct promoter activation and in vivo occupancy remain to be experimentally validated.

A study on the susceptibility of Helice tientsinensis to infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHHNV).

Infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHHNV) is a widely distributed and highly pathogenic virus affecting shrimp. Helice … ection, some individuals developed small black lesions on the carapace, which mostly resolved after molting. IHHNV-challenged crabs exhibited no mortality. Histopathological examination revealed the presence of Cowdry type A eosinophilic inclusion bodies in hemal sinuses and hepatopancreatic tubules of challenged crabs. Characterization of a crustacean hyperglycemic hormone of the horsehair crab Erimacrus isenbeckii.

The horsehair crab Erimacrus isenbeckii is widely distributed from Alaska and the Bering Sea through Southern Sakhalin, and in Japan from the coastal areas of Hokkaido to the Sea of Japan. In the Hokkaido area, although strict resource management has been promoted by setting an allowable catch limit, the catch amount has remained at a low level. While knowledge on larval rearing methods is accumulating in relation to seedling production techniques, information on adult growth and molting is limited, due to a deep-sea species that requires a long period for growth. In decapod crustaceans, the s…

Transmission of Bartonella henselae within Rhipicephalus sanguineus: Data on the Potential Vector Role of the Tick.

Effects of naphthyl derivatives on cell physiology of human leukaemia cells: Survival, cell cycle arrest and apoptosis.

By 2030, the incidence of new cases of cancer worldwide is expected to have increased by 18.1%, with a 22% increase in mortality. Leukaemia is the most common childhood cancer, and drug resistance remains a major therapeutic challenge. Many factors contribute to drug resistance, including inhibition of apoptotic cell death. Natural product-based drugs have led to significant advances in the treatment of human cancer. Due to their polyphenol structure, flavonoids exhibit various pharmacological properties, including antitumor activities. Here we evaluated the effects of twenty compounds includi

Unveiling acetamide coupled benzothiazole hydrazones as potential anti-proliferative agents: an experimental and computational approach.

A series of benzothiazole acetamide hydrazones (8a-p) was synthesized and evaluated for anti-proliferative activity against various human cancer cell lines, including a pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (CAPAN-1), a colorectal carcinoma (HCT-116), a leukemia (HL60), a glioblastoma (LN229), a T lymphoblast (Molt-4), a non-small cell lung cancer (NCI-H460), and a B lymphoblast (Z138) cell line. Among the tested derivatives, compounds 8l, 8n, and 8o emerged as lead compounds, exhibiting cytotoxicity across multiple cell lines. Notably, compound 8o demonstrated selective cytotoxicity towards Z138 a

Andrographolide drives dual apoptosis and ferroptosis via caspase-3 and FACL4 in T-ALL cell lines.

This study investigated the anti-tumor effects of andrographolide, a diterpene lactone derived from Andrographis paniculata, on T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) cells. Andrographolide induced dose-dependent cytotoxicity and morphological changes in the T-ALL cell line Jurkat cells, including cell shrinkage and chromatin condensation. Mechanistically, andrographolide triggers apoptosis through reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, mitochondrial membrane depolarization, and cytochrome c release. These effects were reversed by the ROS inhibitor N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), indicating

Hydrogen sulfide, hypoxia, and low salinity tolerance of deep-sea amphipods (Pseudorchomene sp.) collected from the sea floor off Joetsu, Sea of Japan.

Experimental data contributing to the assessment of the environmental impact of deep-sea resource development is very scarce due to limited research opportunities and the difficulty of biological sampling. Experiments using deep-sea organisms are difficult to conduct in deep-sea in situ environments and are more realistically conducted in land-based research facilities. In this study, the environmental tolerance experiments, including hydrogen sulfide (H2S), low salinity, and hypoxia, were conducted on a deep-sea amphipod (Pseudorchomene sp.) collected from the seafloor with water temperature

Mercury Can Bond to α-Carbon of Curcumin Increasing Stability in Aqueous Medium and Demonstrated Selective Cytotoxicity against Acute Leukemia.

Natural products ranging from phytochemicals to metals are well-known for their therapeutic benefits on different cancer types, including acute leukemia. However, bioavailability significantly limited the applications of various polyphenolic molecules, such as curcumin, while toxicity challenged the medicinal applications of heavy metals, such as mercury (Hg). Specifically, in case of curcumin derivatives, simultaneous solubility, stability, and bioactivity in the aqueous medium remain unachieved, leading to poor clinical translation. We demonstrate for the first time that the above-mentioned
