BACKGROUND: Childhood adversity has been shown to exert profound effects on basic psychological processes well into adulthood. Some of these processes, such as those related to reward and emotion, play critical roles in moral decision-making. As a population with high rates of childhood trauma as well as heterogenous clinical presentation, individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) constitute an enriched group in which to examine the correlates of trauma and other clinical variables with moral cognition.
METHODS: 62 euthymic BD patients and 27 controls responded to moral dilemma scenarios and com

Drawing from the dual process model of morality and life history theory, the present research examined the role of cognitive and emotional processes as bridges between basic environmental challenges (i.e., unpredictability and competition) and other-centered moral orientation (i.e., prioritizing the welfare of others). In two survey studies, cognitive and emotional processes represented by future-oriented planning and emotional attachment, respectively (Study 1, N = 405), or by perspective taking and empathic concern, respectively (Study 2, N = 424), positively predicted other-centeredness in

The interplay between Callous Unemotional Traits (CU) and Moral Disengagement (MD) was examined in a sample of 90 adolescents with Disruptive Behavior Disorders. Using a person-centered approach, three CU and MD configurations were identified, attesting the strong relationship between these two moral dimensions. However, for some adolescents, CU and MD do not 'move together'. Practical implications are discussed in terms of assessment and intervention.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Involvement in wartime combat often conveys a number of deleterious outcomes, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, hostility, aggression, and suicidal ideation. Less studied is the effect of engagement in wartime atrocities, including witnessing and perpetrating abusive violence.
DESIGN AND METHODS: This study employed path analysis to examine the direct effects of involvement in wartime atrocities on hostility, aggression, depression, and suicidal ideation independent of combat exposure, as well as the indirect effects via guilt and PTSD symp

This article is about respect for food, responsibility for lifestyle and diet and responsibility for those who suffer from lack of food. After some general reflections on food, feasts, flatulence, taboos and waste, I argue that we have a responsibility to live a healthy lifestyle, but that there are also morally good reasons for taking risks with our health as we cherish other goals and values. Then I discuss situations, using the example of obesity, in which people are not free to choose their lifestyle. Governments and doctors have responsibilities in enabling people to chose healthy eating

In two studies, we investigate the effect of individuals' promotion and prevention focus on engagement in collective action. We show that responding to group-based disadvantage out of a sense of moral conviction motivates prevention-oriented- but not promotion-oriented- individuals to engage in collective action. Furthermore, holding such strong moral convictions about the fair treatment of their group causes the prevention-oriented to disregard societal rules against hostile forms of collective action (i.e., forms of action that are aimed at harming the interests of those held responsible for

BACKGROUND: People who are street involved including those experiencing homelessness and substance use are at increased risk of morbidity and mortality. Such inequities are exacerbated when those facing the greatest inequities in health have the least access to health care. These concerns have rarely been addressed in bioethics and there has been a lack of explicit attention to the dominant societal and organizational values that structure such injustices. The purpose of this paper is to describe the underlying value tensions that impact ethical nursing practice and affect equity in access to

BACKGROUND: Moral distress occurs when professionals know the ethically appropriate action to take but are unable to do so due to constraints. U.S. child welfare workers, who operate under multiple constraints, are at high risk for moral distress. However, current measures do not sufficiently capture sources of moral distress specific to this profession.
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the factorial validity, reliability, and measurement invariance of the Measure of Moral Distress for Child Welfare (MMD-CW; 13 items).
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The study used survey data from 1452 child welfa

Prehospital emergency healthcare professionals, who frequently face situations requiring rapid decision-making, interventions with limited resources, and ethical dilemmas related to patient care, are at high risk of experiencing moral distress. This study aimed to conduct the Turkish cultural adaptation, validity, and reliability testing of the Moral Distress Scale in order to evaluate the moral distress experienced by prehospital emergency healthcare workers. Within the scope of the study, the 20-item, five-factor Moral Distress Scale was translated and culturally adapted into Turkish. The co

To address societal challenges - such as combating climate change - people have to invest in collective goals rather than pursuing selfish objectives. However, prior neuroscientific research has often revealed that reward-motivation is enhanced for self-relevant gains. Here, we draw on social psychological research showing that people have a strong desire to be moral, to examine whether the motivation for investing effort toward collective goals can be increased by appealing to people's desire to be a morally responsible person. We conducted an ERP study examining how a moral appeal influences

To examine the association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and moral hypocrisy among college students, and to elucidate the underlying psychological mechanisms, this study-guided by Ecological Systems Theory and Ego Depletion Theory-investigated the psychological processes through which ACEs may contribute to moral hypocrisy. A questionnaire survey was administered to 1,082 college students. Results indicated that: (1) ACEs positively predicted moral hypocrisy; (2) fear of failure independently mediated the ACEs-moral hypocrisy relationship; (3) ego depletion independently mediate

In this paper, we evaluate the ethical challenges faced by Muslim healthcare professionals (HCPs) working in palliative and end-of-life care (P&EOLC) in the UK. Aiming to contribute to an empirical foundation on which ethical support systems for religious HCPs can be built, we compare Islamic moral frameworks with the secular ethics of the NHS (National Health Service) and assess how Muslim HCPs navigate the integration of both. This qualitative study includes 76 semistructured interviews with Muslim patients, family members and a variety of Muslim and non-Muslim palliative care providers. BACKGROUND: Palliative sedation is a last-resort intervention designed to alleviate refractory suffering at the end of life. Healthcare professionals frequently encounter ethically complex situations when deciding whether and how to apply palliative sedation. Moral case deliberation supports healthcare professionals in discussing ethical issues in a structured way.
OBJECTIVES: To describe healthcare professionals' perceptions of ethical issues about the practice of palliative sedation.
DESIGN: This qualitative study was designed as part of the five-year Palliative Sedation project conducted

People tend to morally prioritize their extremely close others (loved ones; such as family, partners, or friends) while disregarding extremely distant others (societal outcasts; such as pariahs, villains, or criminals). Across seven primary and 15 supplemental studies, we document how multicultural experiences might alter this universal default through moral compression: the simultaneous expansion of moral concern toward societal outcasts and contraction away from loved ones, effectively "compressing" the outermost and innermost anchors of the moral circle closer toward each other. This study examines the mediating role of entrepreneurial social capital on the relationship between entrepreneurial mindfulness and entrepreneurial intentions, and how moral obligation enhances the indirect effect of mindfulness on such intentions through social capital. We draw on the notions of prosocial behavior and social capital to test our assertions with PLS-SEM. Our findings suggest that entrepreneurial social capital complements the relationship between entrepreneurial mindfulness and social entrepreneurial intentions and that moral obligation substantially enhances their indirect ef

BACKGROUND: Moral injury (MI) and negative emotions (NE) are core psychological issues that severely impair the mental health and professional competence of medical staff, while emotion regulation serves as a crucial psychological resource for coping with occupational psychological distress. However, the latent severity profiles of MI among medical staff, as well as the differential mediating effects of emotion regulation strategies, i.e., cognitive reappraisal (CR) and expressive suppression (ES), between MI and negative emotion (NE) remain unexplored.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify
