Predictive range of motion after total knee replacement.

Evaluation of 145 consecutive total knee arthroplasties pre- and postoperatively revealed that regardless of the preoperative deformity (varus, valgus, and flexion contracture), normal alignment of the knee with full extension was obtainable. The amount of flexion to be achieved postoperatively may be determined by the amount of flexion the patient had preoperatively, especially if the degree of flexion was less than 75 degrees. The prosthesis design, sex, age and diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis were found not to correlate with postoperative motion and stability. In the osteoarthric knee, ho…

Signs of essential blepharospasm: a motion-picture analysis.

Motion pictures of 15 patients with essential blepharospasm were studied. Previously unrecognized signs indicated multiple cranial nerve involvement. These signs include impersistence of gaze, lid retraction, tongue thrust, head tilts, head jerks, vertical gaze spasms, and asymmetry. The sugns were also observed in a patient with bilateral blepharospasm who had a history of Bell's palsy suggesting facial nerve injury as a possible factor in blepharospasm. The presence of these signs can be explained by known neural pathways, but the site, or sites, of the lesion remains obscure. These signs ma…

Learning by moving: Physical motion accelerates category learning.

Categorization is crucial for survival, helping animals forage, navigate, and avoid predators-all tasks involving movement. Yet, dominant theories of category learning treat it as a purely cognitive or perceptual process. Here, we challenge this view by demonstrating that physical movement can enhance category learning-but selectively. Using immersive virtual reality, we found that performing large actions, such as swinging a lightsaber, substantially improved learning of categories requiring integration of multiple cues (e.g., distinguishing aggressive from noncancerous lesions), while having

Motion uncertainty visualization based on Gaussian process regression.

In the context of image-guided soft-tissue intervention and surgery navigation, soft tissue motion estimation for a deformed/registered pre-operative/pre-interventional medical image may suffer from multiple sources of uncertainty. Visualizing the uncertainty in the deformed image is of great interest because it conveys the uncertainty in the registered pre-interventional/pre-operative navigation information on deformable soft-tissue organs governing the decisions of the surgeon or intervention specialist. We address the problem of propagating the uncertainty from a Gaussian process (GP)-based…

Depth-Adaptive Injection for Stylized Text-to-Motion.

Discrete text-to-motion generation models are powerful tools for synthesizing diverse human motions, yet endowing them with controllable, high-fidelity stylistic variations remains challenging. Direct retraining or fine-tuning these models often disrupts the fragile discrete token distributions learned by masked generative models, leading to optimization instability, style-content entanglement, and degraded motion quality or text alignment. To address these limitations, we propose the Modular Injection Framework (MIF), a framework for conditional adaptation of masked discrete text-to-motion mo…

Perceived coordinated biological motion sequences warp time perception.

Collective motion requires coordinated movements of multiple individuals, such as people walking in the same direction and in temporal synchrony. It provides a salient social signal closely linked to coordinated group action and social cohesion. Previous research has shown that the human visual system is highly sensitive to such coordinated biological movement, efficiently representing multiple moving agents as a unified spatial entity. While coordinated biological motion also unfolds over time, it remains unclear how its temporal dynamics are processed. Here, we asked participants to complete…

Hearing objects move: apparent motion in complex sounds.

How can we perceive objects as moving based on auditory information? This information is often not continuous, such as when objects are temporarily masked by other, louder objects. To perceive these auditory objects as moving along a continuous path, rather than as one object disappearing and another one reappearing, we need to establish correspondence between the correct object instances, resulting in an auditory apparent motion percept of only one object moving across space. However, correctly linking the object instances that belong to the same object is challenging, as auditory input is of…

Motion Hierarchical Gaussian for Dynamic Control in VR.

Intuitive motion control is essential for virtual reality, allowing users to manipulate objects naturally while receiving realistic and responsive visual feedback. 3D Gaussian splatting provides real-time, photorealistic scene rendering, making it promising for virtual reality applications. Still, it falls short in accurate motion control of dynamic objects due to its unstructured global motion representation and redundant motion learning. To address these problems, we propose a motion hierarchical Gaussian based dynamic control method. First, a motion hierarchical Gaussian representation is i…

Gait-Synced Translation Gain for Naturalistic VR Motion.

Translation gain is a key Redirected Walking (RDW) technique in Virtual Reality (VR) that enables users to navigate virtual environments (VEs) larger than the available physical space. The technique was originally developed to scale users' walking distance in the VE and is typically applied continuously, regardless of the user's motion state. We introduce Gait-Synced Translation Gain (GSTG), a novel approach that adapts translation gain by synchronizing it with the user's gait cycle. GSTG leverages the single-limb support phase of walking-when users are less stable and thus less sensitive to e…

Reexamining the Relationship Between Stereopsis and Motion Parallax.

Depth perception depends on two powerful cues, stereopsis and motion parallax, that share similar geometric foundations but operate under distinct constraints. When observer motion is self-generated and the scene is stationary, the two can produce comparable depth percepts. However, disparity generally supports finer discrimination and more accurate depth magnitude percepts. Real-world depth perception from both cues is complicated by eye movements and matching ambiguity, but motion parallax faces additional challenges due to head movements and the presence of object and scene motion. Empirica…

A discontinuity in motion perception during fixational drift.

The human visual system is tasked with perceiving stable and moving objects despite ever-present eye movements. Normally, our visual system performs this task exceptionally well; indeed, under conditions with frames of reference, our ability to detect relative motion exceeds the sampling limits of foveal cones. However, during fixational drift, if an image is programmed to move in a direction consistent with retinal slip, little to no motion is perceived, even if this motion is amplified. We asked: Would a stimulus moving in a direction consistent with retinal slip, but with a smaller magnitud…

Towards Motion Compensation in Autonomous Robotic Subretinal Injections.

Exudative (wet) age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision loss in older adults, typically treated with intravitreal injections. Emerging therapies, such as subretinal injections of stem cells, gene therapy, small molecules and RPE cells require precise delivery to avoid damaging delicate retinal structures. Robotic systems can potentially offer the necessary precision for these procedures. This paper presents a novel approach for motion compensation in robotic subretinal injections, utilizing real time Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). The proposed method leverages …
