Effects of dimenhydrinate on gastric tachyarrhythmia and symptoms of vection-induced motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: Previous research in our laboratory has shown that symptoms of motion sickness are accompanied by the loss of normal 3 cpm activity and the development of tachyarrhythmia in the electrogastrogram (EGG). HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that dimenhydrinate would prevent the development of gastric tachyarrhythmia and reduce symptoms of motion sickness. METHODS: Twenty health volunteers were tested in a counter-balanced, within-subject, double-blind design. Subjects were exposed to a rotating optokinetic drum to induce vection after receiving either dimenhydrinate (100 mg) or a placebo o…

Effects of pre-exposures to a rotating optokinetic drum on adaptation to motion sickness.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of two different pre-exposure procedures on adaptation to motion sickness in a rotating circular vection drum. The 45 subjects were randomly divided into three groups. The control group only had a standard 16-min exposure to the drum rotating at 60 degrees/s with no pre-exposure. The incremental exposure group had two separated 4-min pre-exposure periods at 15 degrees/s and 30 degrees/s in the rotating drum immediately prior to the standard 16-min exposure period in the drum rotating at 60 degrees/s. The abrupt-exposure group had the sam…

A double-blind placebo controlled evaluation of acupressure in the treatment of motion sickness.

We used 36 subjects in a double-blind placebo controlled experiment to evaluate the effectiveness of acupressure as a prophylaxis against motion sickness. There were two independent variables with two levels each: acupressure vs. placebo, and motion sickness high vs. low susceptible subjects. The provocative stimulus was rotation about two orthogonal axes. Signs and symptoms of motion sickness were scored both by the subject and the observer. In spite of previous reports to the contrary, acupressure provided no protection against motion sickness for either high or low susceptible subjects.

The effects of fixation and restricted visual field on vection-induced motion sickness.

Approximately 60% of healthy human subjects experience motion sickness when exposed to a rotating optokinetic drum. The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of certain visual factors on susceptibility to motion sickness. Vection data (illusory self-motion), horizontal eye movement recordings, subjective motion sickness report, and a measure of gastric myoelectric activity (electrogastrogram, EGG) were obtained from 45 subjects, who were randomly divided into the following three groups: a control group that observed the entire visual field with no fixation, a group that fix…

[Condition of cell membranes in simulated motion sickness and use of alpha-tocopherol].

The purpose of the work was to study the mechanism responsible for adaptive reorganization of membranes--lipid peroxidation during simulated motion sickness (MS) in animals. It was shown that during MS rats exhibited an elevation of the level of diene conjugates and Schiff foundations in the brain indicating lipid peroxidation activation. A similar increase of phospholipase A2 activity in the brain was noted. In the liver, myocardium and erythrocytes the above changes were insignificant. An antioxidant beta-tocopherol inhibited lipid peroxidation in the rat brain and possessed the vestibule-pr…

Role of the area postrema in three putative measures of motion sickness in the rat.

After thermal cauterization of the area postrema in rats the absence of conditioned taste aversion to sucrose paired with lithium chloride (0.15 M, 3.3 ml/kg) was used as a pharmacologic/behavioral index of area postrema damage. In a subsequent experiment the effects of area postrema lesions on three measures proposed as species-relevant measures of motion sickness were studied, using off-vertical rotation at 150 degrees/s for either 30 or 90 min. Lesions of area postrema did not alter postrotational suppression of drinking or amount of defecation during motion. The initial acquisition of cond…

[Circulation and oxygen tension in the brain of the alert rabbit during motion sickness].

Sea sickness in alert rabbits induced an increase in the local blood flow in frontal, occipital and temporal cortex as well as an increase of the total blood flow in the brain. The blood flow increases first in the temporal cortex. The changes occur at an unaltered pO2 level in the brain cortex and hypotensive response. The blood flow increase seems to be due to reflex dilatory effects of the vestibular apparatus on the brain vessels and to intensification of metabolism in result of general activation of cortical structures.

Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors for prevention of space motion sickness: an avenue of investigation.

Space motion sickness (SMS) is an important medical problem facing NASA's space shuttle program. Two theories that have been advanced to explain SMS are the "fluid shift theory" and the "vestibulo-ocular sensory conflict theory". The "fluid shift theory" pre-supposes an active or passive shift of body fluid to the central nervous system (CNS) and vestibulo-auditory mechanisms. In contrast, the "sensory conflict theory" hypothesizes that unfamiliar accelerational and gravitational inputs from the middle ear conflict with visual inputs and lead to SMS. Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (CAHI) are kn…

Transdermal scopolamine in the prevention of motion sickness: evaluation of the time course of efficacy.

This study evaluated the time course of efficacy of transdermal scopolamine in the prevention of motion sickness induced by exposure to coriolis stimulation in a rotating chair. We measured levels of efficacy, quantified side effects and symptoms, and determined inter- and intra-subject variability following use of transdermal scopolamine. The response to transdermal scopolamine was highly variable, although overall we recorded a 40% improvement (p less than 0.05) in test scores 16-72 h after application of the transdermal system. This variability could not be explained solely by the levels of…

Motion sickness and otolith sensitivity: a pilot study of habituation to linear acceleration.

Astronauts, particularly in Skylab flights, experienced varying degrees of motion sickness lasting 3-5 d. One possible mechanism for this motion sickness adaptation is believed to be a reduction in otolith sensitivity with an attendant reduction in sensory conflict. In an attempt to determine if this hypothesis is valid, a ground-based pilot study was conducted on a vertical linear accelerator. The extent of habituation to accelerations which initially produced motion sickness was evaluated, along with the possible value of habituation training to minimize the space motion sickness problem. Re…

Motion sickness among offshore wind farm workers - a scoping review of current research.

BACKGROUND: The transfer of offshore wind farm workers (WFWs) between transport vessels and wind turbines is a hazardous operation with a disproportionately high occurrence of “high potential” incidents. Motion sickness (MS) has been reported to affect offshore wind farm workers’ well-being and has been identified as a job demand, especially during crew transfer and ladder-climbing operations. This scoping review sought to determine the extent to which current research defines, describes, and quantifies MS among offshore WFWs and to identify relevant research gaps. MATERIAL AND METHODS:…

Motion sickness susceptibility modulates the impact of electrical vestibular stimulation on postural control.

Motion sickness is defined as a sensation of uneasiness that occurs during physical motion, such as transportation by bus, plane, car or train. Postural control is one of the multisensory processes that has been examined in individuals susceptible to motion sickness. Indeed, postural control relies on visual, somatosensory and vestibular information. While studies suggest normal-like postural control during quiet standing, others suggest that individuals with motion sickness show increased postural instability during sensory perturbations, namely during visual and somatosensory disturbances. T…

Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Visually Induced Motion Sickness: An eLORETA Study.

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS), a non-invasive form of electrical brain stimulation, has shown potent therapeutic potential for a wide spectrum of conditions. How taVNS influences the characterization of motion sickness - a long mysterious syndrome with a polysymptomatic onset - remains unclear. Here, to examine taVNS-induced effects on brain function in response to motion-induced nausea, 64-channel electroencephalography (EEG) recordings from 42 healthy participants were analyzed; collected during nauseogenic visual stimulation concurrent with taVNS administration, i…

Study of Motion Sickness Model Based on fNIRS Multiband Features during Car Rides.

Motion sickness is a common physiological discomfort phenomenon during car rides. In this paper, the functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) technique was used in real-world vehicle testing. The fNIRS technique was utilized to model the relationship between changes in blood oxygenation levels in the prefrontal cortex of passengers and motion sickness symptoms under different motion conditions. To enhance the accuracy of motion sickness classification, the study utilized principal component analysis (PCA) to extract the most significant features from the test data. Wavelet decomposition w…
