The mucosal immune system consists of a number of compartments that are populated with a different assortment of cells and serve different functions. Topical cyclosporine may be effective in the treatment of various oral mucosal disorders. In three open trials and in one double-blind study, a topical formulation of this drug produced significant improvement in oral lichen planus. Cyclosporine blood levels were generally low in these studies and no abnormalities of laboratory values resulted during use. Case notes of 250 patients (M:F, 1:2.7; age 48.7 +/- 16.5 years) in whom anterior mucosal prolapse had been diagnosed, at one hospital between 1974 and 1976, were reviewed. The commonest symptoms were bleeding (56 per cent), pain (32 per cent) and a sense of prolapse (32 per cent). One hundred eighty-nine patients with anal fistula treated within an eight-month to seven-year period by anal fistulectomy and rectal mucosal advancement are presented. An 80 percent follow-up revealed a 90 percent asymptomatic group and a ten percent group who had minor symptoms. Eight percent of the symptomatic patients had minor soiling; 7 percent were incontinent for gas, and 6 percent were incontinent for loose stools. No patient was incontinent for solid feces. There was a 1.5 percent rate of recurrent anal fistula comparable to other techniques.

Conventional adhesive ointments cause irritation to the mucous membranes. Therefore, a novel mucosal adhesive ointment based partly on neutralized polymethacrylic acid methyl ester was formulated. Amyloidosis of the gastrointestinal tract can mimic a variety of different conditions. The symptoms and findings depend upon the localization and extent of the amyloid deposits. This report concerns a 53-year-old female patient with secondary amyloidosis in the presence of a plasmocytoma, in whom, at endoscopy, petechial mucosal suggillation were observed in the distal colon. The cause of the mucosal petechiae were probably vascular changes induced by deposits of amyloid.

A dose-and-time related-effect of oral phenyltoloxamine citrate, a Class I, H1 antihistamine compound, has been demonstrated against allergen-induced wheal-and-erythema skin reactions among 10 adults with a diagnosis of allergic rhinitis and seasonal pollinosis. Clinical improvement in the existing symptoms of rhinorrhea, nasal obstruction, pruritus and sneezing, showed a significant correlation with the inhibition of reagin-mediated skin reactivity caused by phenytoloxamine. Antral mucosal diaphragm is uncommon, and presents with manifestations of obstruction to the pyloric outlet. The diagnosis is usually established only by gastrotomy. Excision of the diaphragm or pylorophasty affords permanent cure and unnecessary partial gastrectomy should be avoided.
